Bail bid set to continue in Vanessa murder case
As the bail application of the man accused of killing Nelson Mandela Bay mom Vanessa van Rensburg continues on Monday morning, outside the court her family said the past four weeks had been the most painful of their lives.
Murder accused Rob Evans is set to return to the dock of the Humansdorp regional court after yet another weekend behind bars.
The 58-year-old father of three is accused of beating and strangling Van Rensburg, 36, during the Easter weekend.
Her body was found in the living room of Evans' Oyster Bay holiday home on April 20.
On Friday last week, Evans read his affidavit into the record in a bid to convince the court why he should be released on bail.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Van Rensburg family, spokesperson Dorette de Swart said: 'The past few weeks have been the most painful of our lives.
'As we grieve the unimaginable loss of Vanessa, we are also trying to navigate the long and difficult path towards justice.
'We hope the outcome of the bail proceedings will reflect the seriousness of the charges and acknowledge the deep suffering Vanessa endured in her final moments.
'We know we can never bring her back, but we continue to place our trust in the justice system to honour her life and seek accountability for her senseless death.'

Eastern Cape woman dies in mysterious circumstances after hospitalisation in for GBV assault
A 51-year-old Eastern Cape woman died in a Mthatha hospital on Friday after an alleged gender-based violence incident at a car dealership two weeks ago. Provincial police spokesperson Capt Welile Matyolo said the woman's 57-year-old partner allegedly assaulted the woman when she visited him at the dealership where he works on May 31. He was arrested hours after her death on Friday. 'The suspect physically assaulted the victim at his workplace and took her to hospital on June 1. The suspect claimed his lover was assaulted by unknown thugs near the dealership,' Matyolo said. He visited her in hospital bringing her refreshments. 'The victim subsequently became sick and died at about 2pm that same day. Based on preliminary investigations using available electronic evidence, the suspect was arrested on Friday at about 7pm.' Matyolo said post-mortem results would determine the exact cause of the victim's death. Acting OR Tambo district commissioner Brig Vukile Ntuli commended the arrest and urged police to secure a conviction. 'We can no longer tolerate this brutal violence against women,' he said. Mpumalanga teenager charged with perjury after faking rape
A 16-year-old girl has been charged with perjury after her claim about being raped proved to be fabricated. During the police investigation it was established no rape had occurred. 'The girl eventually confessed she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, chose to lie about being raped,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane. In her original report, the teenager alleged she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom ( Emnothweni) to Lydenburg (Mashishing) when a black VW Polo with two male occupants speaking English offered her a lift. She claimed after passing Coromandel, the driver diverted into a secluded area, where she was rendered unconscious by a cloth with a chemical smell. On regaining consciousness, she claimed the passenger was raping her. He offered her money, which she refused. 'The claims have since been proven false by the investigating officers.' TimesLIVE

Former constable sentenced to six years for corruption
The Kuruman regional court in the Northern Cape on Friday sentenced former police constable Johannes Shuping to six years' imprisonment after convicting him of corruption. The conviction on two counts of corruption involved R10,000 that Shuping solicited from a member of the public. 'The charges relate to a 2018 incident in which Shuping, then a detective at Kathu police station, rearrested the complainant, Buti Moepadira, despite the case already being before the court,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said. After his arrest, Shuping offered to 'make the docket disappear' in exchange for a payment of R11,000. 'Moepadira, who was detained at Kathu police station due to a lack of accommodation in Kuruman, was allowed by Shuping to use his cellphone to arrange the payment. A R6,000 cash payment was delivered to the accused by the complainant's brother.' Shuping continued to demand the outstanding R5,000, prompting Moepadira to report the matter to the Hawks. 'A sting operation was then conducted using marked banknotes provided by the investigating officer. During the operation, the complainant's brother handed over the remaining R4,000 to the accused. Shuping fled the scene but was arrested a week later at his workplace.' At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of marked R200 notes, which matched the serial numbers recorded during the operation. Prosecutor Kagontle Redemption Barnett took over the case after the original prosecutor was appointed to the bench. In aggravation of sentence, she argued that Shuping had grossly abused his position of authority and violated public trust. As a law enforcement officer, he was duty-bound to uphold the law, but instead chose to betray his oath and the constitution. Barnett emphasised that a strong sentence would deter similar conduct and reinforce public confidence in the criminal justice system. The court concurred and sentenced Shuping to six years' imprisonment on each count, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently. 'The NPA welcomes the conviction and sentence. This outcome reaffirms that no one is above the law and underscores the importance of protecting the integrity of the criminal justice system by holding those who abuse their power accountable,' Senokoatsane said.
