City residents protest translocation of trees
Guwahati: Civil society activists and concerned citizens on Sunday gathered to voice their objection against the govt's recent translocation of trees from the Ambari area, undertaken for an upcoming flyover project valued at over Rs 800 crore and spanning from Noonmati to Ambari.
Residents claim the govt has not only disregarded public sentiment and environmental responsibility, but has also gone back on their earlier commitments made to the Gauhati high court in affidavits. Noted littérateur Hiren Gohain, present at the protest, criticised the govt, questioning both the unscientific methods employed and the overall rationale and feasibility of the flyover project.
Prominent scientist and writer Dinesh Chandra Goswami said, "Tree translocation must be carried out with utmost care, but in this case, the govt has displayed a reckless disregard for both the trees and its citizens.
The conditions in which the trees are kept in is truly saddening, and this reduces their chance of survivability."
Social scientist Apurba Kumar Baruah and historian Manorama Sharma cited studies from Dehradun's Forest Research Institute (FRI), indicating that tree translocation in India has a low survival rate of approximately 10%.
Figures from Global Forest Watch, an online platform, show that Assam lost over 18,000 hectares of natural forest last year, significantly above the national average.

Panchayat 4 trailer, release date out: In Manju Devi vs Kranti Devi poll battle, sachivji gets beaten up, violence on Phulera's streets. Watch
Panchayat Season 4 Trailer: More politics, confusion and utter chaos are on transit to screens all over the country as Prime Video has dropped the trailer for Panchayat Season 4. Moreover, the makers have decided to move up the timeline of the release, and now the new season will drop on June 24 instead of the initially planned date of July 2. The shift in the release dates comes after the makers opened the voting lines to the public and asked them to choose their candidates between Manju Devi (Neena Gupta) and Kranti Devi (Sunita Rajwar), which would ultimately affect the release date. The trailer promises a season with all features of the beloved show turned all the way to 11. After the last season, there will be no more subtle gestures of love and appreciation between Abhishek and Rinki, played by Jitendra Kumar and Sanvikaa, respectively. As the election inches close, different tactics will be put into place, new confidants will be hired, and there might be a little space for a coup. In the trailer Manju Devi is seen going door to door with her makeshift entourage in order to get the maximum number of people on board, while Abhishek is already preparing for the worst-case scenario, which would be Manju Devi losing the election. ALSO READ: Jitendra Kumar recalls living in a 'jhopdi' in the jungle, reveals he picked up daily wage work for Rs 40: 'I was only 11 then' The trailer does reveal more trouble coming Abhishek's way as we get a peek into a fight in which he gets decked right across his face. To add injury to insult, this episode becomes an important factor in the election, with Manju Devi using it to rake in more votes and Kranti Devi trying to discredit the entire incident. More players are going to take part in this already chaotic game as Swanand Kirkire seems to be playing a more active role in the narrative. We saw the first glimpse of his character in the previous season, as he played sort of a 'big brother' to MLA Chandrakishore Singh (Pankaj Jha). As the beloved gang steers through jeers, disappointment, relationships and politics, TVF and Prime Video will be hoping to maintain the previously high standards set by the show. Created by Chandan Kumar and Deepak Kumar Mishra, the cast of Panchayat includes Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik, Sanvikaa, Sunita Rajwar, Durgesh Kumar and Pankaj Jha.

Committee demands adequate compensation for Gosikhurd Dam project affected farmers, families
Written by: Kartika Jamdar Members of the Gosikhurd Prakalpgrast Sangharsh Samiti that represents farmers, agricultural labourers, and fishermen, affected by the ongoing Gosikhurd Dam project demanded adequate compensation for the affected families. Speaking to the media in Nagpur, members of the committee vowed to intensify their agitation and even threatened to move courts against the alleged government indifference. Speaking at a press conference in Nagpur on Monday, Advocate Govind Bhendarkar and Ram Bante, accused the state government of neglecting the demands of those displaced by the Gosikhurd National Irrigation Project (GNIP) — a major irrigation project being built on the Godavari basin, specifically on the Wainganga river. While around 2,50,800 hectares of land in Nagpur, Bhandara, and Chandrapur were expected to be under irrigation, the Sangharsha Samiti claimed that the project has failed to bring even 40 percent of the promised land under irrigation. The committee further raised concerns over pollution of water and demanded adequate compensation for families affected by the project as per the provisions of the National Rehabilitation Policy 2007 and the Maharashtra State Rehabilitation Act 1999. They demanded that a total sum of Rs 10 lakh be given to each family as compensation instead of Rs 2.9 lakh. The representatives of the Sangharsha Samiti said that while Gosikhurd Prakalp Stariya Vyavasthapan Samiti was set up in 1992 and it included both government officials as well as members of affected farmer communities, it has only met 18 times until 2020 and has not met since. 'We demand that this committee needs to convene immediately, and if not, we will have to take this matter to court,' Bhendarkar said. A 2018 CAG report tabled in the Assembly revealed that between 2012 and 2017, the Gosikhurd Dam project failed to deliver on key promises. It flagged poor planning, cost overruns, contract violations, and delayed rehabilitation efforts, all of which ultimately allegedly benefited contractors more than communities. Due to the lack of basic civic infrastructure, only 20 percent of the promised land was brought under irrigation. The report also confirmed that the dam water was polluted by untreated sewage and contaminated river inflows. In 2023, Ashok Nete, former MP from Gadchiroli-Chimur, addressed the Lok Sabha on the question of compensation given to the Project Affected Persons saying, 'Regarding rehabilitation and resettlement of the project affected families (PAFs), it is informed that the project involves 85 fully affected and 183 partially affected villages, involving 14,984 PAFs…. So far, 12,298 PAFs have been reported by the State Government to have been resettled.'

Howrah sex racket kingpin Shweta Khan's son Ariyan, aide held; Fultusi still on the run
Ariyan Khan and his aide were arrested in Kolkata for allegedly running a sex and pornography racket disguised as an event management firm, Ishara Productions. The arrest followed the escape of a victim who reported confinement and torture. NEW DELHI: West Bengal police on Wednesday arrested Ariyan Khan, 26, and his aide from Golf Green in south Kolkata for allegedly running a sex and pornography racket under the cover of an event management firm. His mother and key accused, Shweta Khan alias Fultusi, remains absconding. The arrests come days after a 22-year-old woman from Sodepur, who had been confined and tortured for three months, escaped their clutches and alerted police. She is currently being treated for severe injuries in hospital. Racket operated under 'Ishara Productions' Investigators said Ariyan and Fultusi co-owned Ishara Productions, which operated out of a rented apartment in Bankra, Howrah. Behind the façade of event management, they allegedly coerced women into pornography and sex work, subjecting those who refused to brutal torture. The case has taken a darker turn with revelations that Fultusi had attempted to force her own teenage daughter, Ishika, into the racket. Ishika, then 18, died by suicide in 2021 after resisting her mother's pressure. Following her death, locals alleged that Fultusi attempted to extort Rs 2 crore from a businessman by threatening to file a false case. The case was later found to be fabricated. Fultusi was known to flaunt her alleged political links, including pictures with leaders of the Trinamool Congress 's minority cell, and reportedly campaigned during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Denying knowledge of her, state minister Arup Ray said, 'I know nothing about this woman. The party cannot help if someone misuses political connections. If anyone backed her from the party, they will be punished.' With Ariyan Khan now in custody, police say the hunt for Fultusi has intensified. Earlier, their flat was found locked, and both their phones switched off. Officials are not ruling out the possibility that she may have fled the country, possibly to Bangkok.
