OSDMA launches swimming training for students to curb drownings
1 2 Jharsuguda: Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has initiated a comprehensive swimming and drowning survival skills training programme for students in Jharsuguda. At least 1,200 drowning deaths are reported in the state annually. The pilot project, implemented across 20 districts in collaboration with Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), aims to train 300 young adults and school students aged 12-18 in each district. "Each batch of 30 participants receives intensive training in swimming techniques and creating improvised floating devices." "We're teaching crucial survival skills to non-swimmers that could save lives during flood-like disasters," said Hemraj Kishan from the Emergency Response Centre.
