Fundraising run for cancer research returns to KL on May 18

The Star08-05-2025

THE Terry Fox Run will be held in Kuala Lumpur for the third consecutive year, on May 18.
The 5km charity race will be flagged off at 7am at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur where it will also conclude.
Participants will run along Kuala Lumpur City Hall's Sunday morning car-free route.
The event is organised in support of Cancer Research Malaysia and is open to participants of all ages.
Four Seasons regional commercial director Nelson Hilton said the hotel was proud to continue its support for the cause.
'We're privileged to lead this important event for the third consecutive year and help raise funds for cancer research in the local community. We hope to see families, friends and colleagues come together in support of this worthy cause,' he said.
Last year's event drummed up over RM43,000 and organisers are hoping to raise more this year.
All funds collected from the sale of official Terry Fox Run T-shirts, available on the hotel's website, will go directly to Cancer Research Malaysia.
The hotel's staff members are also expected to take part in the run.
The Terry Fox Run began in 1981 in memory of Canadian athlete Terry Fox who lost a leg to bone cancer at age 18.
In 1980, he attempted to run across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
He covered 5,374km before his deteriorating health forced him to stop.
Fox died the following year but not before raising CAD24mil for cancer research.
Four Seasons founder Isadore Sharp helped organise the first Terry Fox Run which attracted over 300,000 participants.
Registration for the Kuala Lumpur event is available online or by scanning the QR code provided by the hotel.

Swimming-McIntosh breaks Hosszu's IM world record at Canadian trials

Three-times Olympic champion McIntosh, who set a world record in the 400 freestyle on Saturday, touched the wall in two minutes, 05.70 seconds to knock 0.42 off Hosszu's time from the 2015 world championships in Kazan. "It's been one of those records that's always been in the back of my mind since trials two years ago," said McIntosh, who won Olympic gold in the 200 butterfly and 200 and 400 IM at the Paris Games. "I've been knocking on the door on this one. I've just tried to chip away, chip away at it. To finally do it, it's kind of like 'Wow, I've finally got that done.'" McIntosh, who also won a 400 freestyle silver in Paris, has been in dominant form at Saanich Commonwealth Place, swimming the third-fastest women's 800 freestyle in history on Sunday. She said setting a new mark in the 200 IM was a real confidence booster heading into the world championships in Singapore in July and August. "It's awesome and 200 IM I think is my main race out of my top five, six races where I really have to execute perfectly," she added. There's no room for mistakes and it's kind of a sprint event for me. "Overall, I'm really happy with that and it gives me a lot of confidence heading into Singapore," added McIntosh, who also holds the 400 IM world record after setting a time of 4:24.38 at last year's trials. World No. 2 Mirabel to defend title at TSM Golf Challenge

KUALA LUMPUR: The TSM Golf Challenge, one of the nation's premier junior amateur tournaments, is set to return for its 14th edition from June 16-19 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), with national No. 1 amateurs Mirabel Ting and Anson Yeo leading the field. For the first time, the tournament will be held biennially, as announced last year. A total of 85 players — 50 boys and 35 girls under the age of 21 — will compete in this invitation-only event. The top 10 finishers in both categories will be awarded academic scholarships worth a combined RM133,000. The previous edition in 2023, also held at KLGCC, saw Mirabel claim the women's title while Marcus Lim emerged as the men's champion. Mirabel, currently home on summer break after a standout year at Florida State University, has confirmed her participation to defend her crown. Marcus, however, will not be returning as he has since turned professional. This will mark Mirabel's first tournament on home soil since the Maybank Championship last October. She enters as the clear favourite, now ranked No. 2 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) — a historic achievement as the highest-ever ranking for a Malaysian golfer, male or female. Mirabel recently added another feather to her cap by becoming the first Asian recipient of the prestigious Annika Award, presented annually to the top female golfer in the NCAA Division I circuit. She captured four collegiate titles during the 2024-25 season and wrapped up the year with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship last month. A successful title defence would also make Mirabel the first player to do so at the TSM Golf Challenge since Galven Green achieved the feat in 2014 and 2015. Held under the tagline "In Search of the Malaysian Tiger", the TSM Golf Challenge has played a key role in shaping Malaysia's top golfing talents. Past champions include Gavin Green, Kelly Tan and Ashley Lau. Gavin and Ashley are currently the national No. 1 professionals, competing on the DP World Tour and Epson Tour respectively, while Kelly held the mantle as Malaysia's sole LPGA Tour representative for nearly a decade until last year. All three have also proudly represented Malaysia at the Olympic Games. "This event is more than a golf tournament — it's a national movement," said Datuk Mustapha Buang, president of the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Charity Golf Foundation.

UAE FA kick two players out of national camp with heavy fines for misconduct

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates Football Association has suspended defender Khalid Al-Dhanhani and forward Sultan Adel for five domestic matches and fined each player 500,000 AED (US$136,132.21) yesterday for misconduct during a national team training camp. The players have left the camp with immediate effect due to a violation of disciplinary rules and will not travel with the squad to Kyrgyzstan for tomorrow's final third round match of Asia's World Cup 2026 qualifiers. "The disciplinary committee of the UAE Football Association has decided to suspend Sharjah player Khalid Al-Dhanhani and Shabab Al-Ahli player Sultan Adil for five domestic matches, and to impose a fine of Dh500,000 on each," the UAE FA said in a statement yesterday. "They have also been removed from the senior national team list after committing a violation inside the national team training camp on June 7." With Iran and Uzbekistan qualifying for the World Cup after securing the top two spots in Group A, UAE will move into the fourth round of Asian qualifying along with Qatar, with the two Gulf teams set to finish third or fourth. In this round, group winners will earn direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while runners-up will proceed to the fifth round for another shot at reaching the finals.
