Janet Jackson receives Icon Award, performs on TV for the first time in seven years during the American Music Awards
Beyoncé, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, and more Black artists won big during the 2025 American Music Awards.
The legendary Janet Jackson ended her seven-year hiatus from performing on TV last night.
On Monday, May 26, the 59-year-old pop icon attended the American Music Awards (AMAs) at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she received the Icon Award and performed her sultry hits 'All For You' and 'Someone to Call My Lover,' CBS News reported.
Even though Jackson was 'honored' to receive the Icon Award, she explained why she didn't consider herself an icon during her acceptance speech.
'My family, myself, our dream was to, it wasn't ever to be famous. We always had a special love for music, dancing and singing. Fame came as a result of hard work and dedication,' she continued, per Deadline. 'My story, my family story, is truly an American story. This would have only happened in America. The only thing that I hope for is that I've been an inspiration to others and artists to follow their dreams and succeed.'
The youngest member of the Jackson family has been a pop sensation since she first burst onto the scene, peaking on the Billboard Top 200 with her debut album at the age of 16. Since then, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has gone on to top the charts, including with 'Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814,' which remains the only album with seven Top Five-charting songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
The evening was marked by several other major wins for Black artists. Beyoncé, who wasn't there, took home the win for both Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album. Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us,' unsurprisingly, won the Favorite Hip Hop Song. SZA, currently on tour with Lamar, won the Favorite R&B Song and the Favorite Female R&B Artist. Megan Thee Stallion won the award for Favorite Female Hip Hop Artist; Tyla won the award for Favorite Afro Beats Artist; and Doechii won Social Song of the year for her viral hit 'Anxiety.'
The Weeknd won the Favorite Male R&B Artist award and the award for Favorite R&B Album for 'Hurry Up Tomorrow.'
The award show—hosted by Jennifer Lopez—fell on Memorial Day this year and several veterans and service members were honored throughout the evening.
The AMAs, launched in 1974, are voted on by fans each year.

EXCLUSIVE: Major layoffs are underway Monday the Walt Disney Company, with several hundred employees impacted globally, Deadline has learned. The bulk of them are across divisions of Disney Entertainment, including marketing for both film and television as well as television publicity, casting and development. Also affected are Disney's corporate financial operations. According to sources, the size of the cuts on the film and TV side of Disney Entertainment is comparable. No teams are being eliminated. They are part of an ongoing cost-cutting process at the traditional media companies as they reshape their business to focus on streaming while facing economic headwinds. Disney's Bob Iger set the pace upon his return as CEO, establishing a goal of at least $7.5 billion in cost reductions at the start of 2023, with about 7,000 jobs eliminated that year. In early March, just under 200 Disney employees were laid off, representing almost 6% of the workforce in the ABC News Group and Disney's entertainment networks, including Freeform and FX. A big restructuring last October involved the shutdown of ABC Signature, with its operations folded into 20th Television, and the consolidation of ABC and Hulu Originals scripted drama and comedy teams. "No trial:" Sammy 'The Bull' says Diddy would have been killed in the Mafia

NEW YORK - During an interview on News Nation, ex-Mafia underboss Sammy "The Bull" Gravano gave his two cents on the Sean "Diddy" Combs trial. Gravano made it quite clear that if the Mafia had known about Combs' alleged activities for which he is being tried currently, the hip hop mogul would not have fared very well. Gravano didn't mince words when it came to the accusations brought against Combs during an interview on "Banfield." What they're saying "I think they have a clear-cut case without the RICO (law). I mean, what this guy did was disgusting. I don't think there's a person alive – a man or a woman – especially a woman, who are not going to hate this guy. Whatever he did was completely disgusting, it's beyond criminal," Gravano said. "He disgraced everybody," Gravano continued. Gravano went on to share his opinions on how he believes Combs' actions painted an unflattering picture of Black people. And since the case has garnered such national, and somewhat international attention, Gravano said if Combs' isn't given a lengthy sentence, he believes "the whole world" will "think, 'This is a disgusting country.'" Gravano was asked to compare some of the more horrific alleged actions carried out by the Mafia and what Combs is accused of doing. "If we did that in the mob, we would be killed for it. We would never touch women and children," he said. "If he (Combs) was in the Mafia and we knew what he was doing, he would have been killed. There would be no trial." The backstory Gravano was a former underboss for the Gambino crime family and confessed to being involved in 19 murders. Gravano later became a government informant in 1991 and helped bring down 39 mobsters including the family's boss John Gotti. He went on to serve a five-year prison sentence after reaching a plea deal and moved to Arizona in 1994 under the federal witness protection program.
