Illini women secure No. 8 in NCAA Tournament, will take on Creighton
The Illini women are putting on their dancing slippers again in the NCAA Tournament, as the No. 8 seed in the Birmingham Region takes on No. 9 seed Creighton in Austin on Saturday.
This is the second appearance for Illinois under Head Coach Shauna Green, and the 10th in program history.
Illinois (21-9) is one of 12 Big Ten teams in the women's tourney — the most in conference history.
"To hear your name called never gets old. I don't care how many times you hear it. So proud of this group. Obviously, our goal coming into the season was an NCAA Tournament," said Green. "For us to sit and hear our name, and know we're going to be in it — even leading into it; it wasn't like, you know we were on the bubble — again, it's something that you just don't get sick of hearing."
Also in the Birmingham Region, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women slipped to a No. 3 seed. Led by sophomore star Hannah Hidalgo, Notre Dame has a tricky road to the Final Four with a loaded field that includes No. 1 seed Texas.
This is the Notre Dame program's 30th appearance in the Big Dance.

If I was playing in a football game, we were winning by a lot. 'Those metrics of winning and losing weren't the only things that mattered. They were important. These educators took all the time to get the best out of their students and I was one of them. They saw something in me and chose to make a positive impact, and I am forever grateful.'

Ohio State men's hockey releases 2025-2026 nonconference schedule
The Ohio State men's hockey team surprised a lot of people with their unexpectedly high level of play this past season. The Buckeyes lost a lot of key players but found a way to plug in more talent and shock a lot of people by making it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Things didn't end all that well on the national scale in the postseason, but it was still an overachieving year in which OSU went 24-12-2 overall and finished third in the League with a 14-9-1 record. It was a fun season, one that it hopes it can build momentum off of and take it into this upcoming season. And while we won't know the Big Ten schedule until a future date, the program did announce its nonconference schedule this past week, so if you are an ice hockey fan, and one that loves to watch the Scarlet and Gray, you've got something to look forward to. All told, the Buckeyes will host five nonconference games and go on the road for another five. Cubs legend Sammy Sosa returns to Wrigley Field after 20-plus-year hiatus
Legendary Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa returned to Wrigley Field for the first time in more than 20 years on Friday before Chicago's afternoon game with the Seattle Mariners. Sosa, who is set to be inducted into the Cubs' team Hall of Fame this year, arrived at the iconic North Side ballpark in a black SUV. He was greeted by owner Tom Ricketts, who embraced him in a hug as he exited the vehicle. Sosa became the face of the Cubs franchise where he played 13 seasons after coming in a trade from the crosstown White Sox in March 1992. A seven-time All-Star, Sosa hit 545 homers in 1,811 games with the Cubs and hit a franchise-record 66 in 1998 when he was named the NL's MVP. Sosa, now 56, played his final game with the Cubs at Wrigley on Oct. 2, 2004, when he homered and had two hits in an 8-6 loss to Atlanta. During his years with the Cubs, Sosa appeared to bulk up drastically and was a headliner in a generation of baseball's biggest names linked to performance-enhancing drugs. The Cubs traded him to Baltimore with cash in February 2005 for three players. Sosa appeared to acknowledge using performance-enhancing drugs in December when he released a statement saying he was sorry for mistakes, without specifying them. "There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games," he said in the statement. "I never broke any laws. But in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize." On Friday morning, Sosa posed for photos with rising Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong outside the team's clubhouse and a video showed Sosa embracing manager Craig Counsell in his office before the game. "(Sosa) saw the wind blowing out today and planned this trip around a good day to be here," Counsell joked. "He asked to be in the lineup because the wind's blowing out." The Cubs honored Sosa with a video board tribute after the second inning. Sosa waved and bowed to fans from a suite during the presentation. In Thursday's 8-7 loss to Milwaukee, Crow-Armstrong went deep to set a new team record for reaching 20 homers and 20-plus stolen stolen bases the fastest, doing it in 73 games. Sosa had the old mark of 96, set in 1994. Counsell, who faced Sosa as a player, saluted the former slugger for his strength at the plate and long homers, as well as star power. "Probably the best thing, Sammy was a true entertainer," Counsell said. "I think when you're in this long enough, you realize that's part of this. "We're also here to entertain and I think Sammy was great at that."
