Samsung overtakes Apple to lead global smartphone market in Q1 2025: Canalys Report

Mint30-04-2025

Samsung has once again beaten Apple to claim the top position in the global smartphone market for the first quarter of 2025, according to the latest data from market research firm Canalys. The South Korean tech giant captured a commanding 20 per cent share of the market, shipping 60.5 million units between January and March this year.
The modest 0.2 per cent year-on-year growth in global smartphone shipments during Q1 2025 signals continued caution among vendors, who appear to be focusing on maintaining healthier inventory levels amid shifting market dynamics. A total of 296.9 million smartphones were shipped globally during the period.
Samsung's strong performance was primarily driven by the release of its flagship Galaxy S25 series alongside the refreshed Galaxy A series, which contributed significantly to its global numbers. Apple followed closely behind, holding 19 per cent market share with 55 million units shipped. The American company saw growth particularly in the United States and select markets in the Asia Pacific region.
Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi secured third position with a 14 per cent share, having shipped 41.8 million devices. Oppo and Vivo rounded out the top five, shipping 22.7 million and 22.9 million units respectively, each accounting for eight per cent of the global share.
The Canalys report highlighted diverging regional performances. While the US, China, and Africa experienced noticeable growth, markets such as India, Europe, and the Middle East remained subdued. In China, government subsidy initiatives played a key role in spurring consumer demand, whereas Africa benefitted from active retail expansion and increased promotional efforts.
In the United States, smartphone shipments surged by 12 per cent year-on-year, a boost largely attributed to Apple. The company reportedly ramped up production ahead of anticipated tariff changes, diversifying its manufacturing base. Although a majority of iPhones sold in the US continue to originate from China, Apple has accelerated production in India — covering the standard models of the iPhone 15 and 16, as well as increasing output of the 16 Pro series.
'With reciprocal tariff policies in flux, Apple is likely to further increase its India-based manufacturing for US-bound shipments, reducing its dependence on Chinese production,' said Le Xuan Chiew, Research Manager at Canalys.
Despite the sluggish overall growth, the Q1 figures reflect an evolving landscape where strategic manufacturing shifts and regional market dynamics continue to shape the global smartphone industry.

One in four international students in US were from India: At 4.2 lakh Indian students, fuelled surge in numbers during 2024

The total number of active F-1 and M-1 international student SEVIS records in the US were a whopping 15.8 lakh in 2024, marking a 5.3% increase over the previous calendar year. According to a report released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – 'SEVIS by the Numbers 2024', while international students hailed from more than 229 countries, this growth was substantially fuelled by students from India. Asia had the largest number of active international student records in the US, nearly 11 lakh students from this continent accounted for nearly 72% of the total foreign student population. Nearly 4.2 lakh Indian students represented an increase of 11.8% compared to 2023, while the 3.2 lakh foreign student records from China, which is the other major source country, represented a small decrease of 0.25 percent compared to 2023. Indian students constitute nearly 27% of the total foreign student population in 2024, followed by Chinese at 20%. The data in this report is drawn from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a web-based system that the Department of Homeland Security uses to maintain and manage information on foreign students and exchange visitors. While the F-1 visa is held by those undergoing academic study courses, the M-1 visa is given to students undergoing vocational programs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo According to the ICE-report, more than 90% or to be precise 14.3 lakh international students were enrolled in higher education degree programs, California enrolled the largest number of foreign students at 2.37 lakh, followed by New York at 1.72 lakh. attracted the maximum number of international students While this ICE-report is based on data for 2024, the recent trends are not as rosy. Chris R. Glass, a professor and higher education specialist at Boston College analysed SEVIS data between March 2024 to March 2025. According to him, 'The overall decline of -11.3% from March 2024 (with 11.53 lakh active students) to March 2025 (with 10.22 lakh active students) is remarkable in both scale and speed.' His study shows that the number of students from India declined by nearly 28% from 3.54 lakh in March 2024 to 2.55 lakh a year later. The number of Chinese students rose marginally by 3.28% to stand at 2.63 lakh as of March 2025. Glass points out that 'The current year-over-year decline is a reflection of an enrollment cycle that began under the Biden administration, so the March 2025 numbers have yet to reflect any impacts of policies implemented under the second Trump administration.' Anecdotal evidence suggests that US is losing its lustre as an attractive study destination for Indian students owing to a multitude of factors such as: The arbitrary termination of SEVIS records and/or F1 visas of international students – which led many to self deport, while others stayed back to battle it out in courts; the uncertainty relating to continuity of the extended optional practical training program (OPT) for STEM students, the temporary suspension of consulate interviews pending release of a social-media scrutiny policy and mass layoffs in corporate America. Thus, the numbers for March 2026 could be much lower. Indian students dominate the STEM field: While international students are eligible for a one year OPT, those from the Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) fields, post their graduation, get an additional two years of work experience under the OPT program. There were 1.94 lakh OPT students with both an employment authorization document (EAD) and who reported working for an employer in 2024, compared to 1.60 lakh 2023. This marks a 21.1 percent increase from 2023 and the fourth year of consecutive growth, states the ICE-Report. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students participated in the STEM-OPT extension program. The ICE-report points out that Indian students are particularly prominent in the post-completion OPT- STEM extension program, accounting for a substantial 48.0% of participants. and 20.4% from China.

Amid his ongoing feud with President Donald Trump , Tesla CEO and former DOGE leader Elon Musk has unfollowed one of Trump's top allies – Stephen Miller , the White House deputy chief of staff and his wife, Katie Miller on social media. Katie Miller served as a Special Government Employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Katie – who was working as spokesperson for the task force – left the White House last week to work full-time for Elon Musk, who also stepped down from his advisory role at DOGE earlier this month. According to X influence tracker 'Big Tech Alert', Musk also unfollowed Turning Point USA founder and MAGA loyalist Charlie Kirk. Musk and Stephen Miller have exchanged conversations on X Incidentally, Musk and Stephen Miller – who have interacted publicly on X in the past – recently involved in an online spat after the tech billionaire criticised the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'. The Tesla CEO then said that he was 'disappointed' with the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', claiming it contradicted the budget-cutting goals he pursued during his tenure with DOGE. 'I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don't know if it can be both,' he said. 'My personal opinion.' Shortly after Musk's comments about the bill, Stephen Miller took to X (formerly Twitter), writing: 'Under senate budget rules, you cannot cut discretionary spending (only mandatory) in a reconciliation bill,' Miller wrote. 'So DOGE cuts would have to be done through what is known as a rescissions package or an appropriations bill,' he added. He further stated that the bill 'does not fund the departments of government' nor finance federal agencies, pushing back against Musk's claim that it undermined DOGE's mission. Musk-Trump BIG blow up Musk and Trump – once close allies – have recently grown apart after the tech CEO publicly blasted the administration's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', claiming it will usher in 'debt slavery,' lead to 'American bankruptcy,' and reverse the gains made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in cutting federal expenditure. Responding to Musk's remarks, Trump said 'I'm very disappointed with Elon. I've helped him a lot. He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem & he only developed the problem when he found out we're going to cut EV mandate'. While the tech billionaire claimed that the bill was 'never shown' to him 'even once'. Musk further revealed that the bill was passed in the 'dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!'.
