Samsung overtakes Apple to lead global smartphone market in Q1 2025: Canalys Report
Samsung has once again beaten Apple to claim the top position in the global smartphone market for the first quarter of 2025, according to the latest data from market research firm Canalys. The South Korean tech giant captured a commanding 20 per cent share of the market, shipping 60.5 million units between January and March this year.
The modest 0.2 per cent year-on-year growth in global smartphone shipments during Q1 2025 signals continued caution among vendors, who appear to be focusing on maintaining healthier inventory levels amid shifting market dynamics. A total of 296.9 million smartphones were shipped globally during the period.
Samsung's strong performance was primarily driven by the release of its flagship Galaxy S25 series alongside the refreshed Galaxy A series, which contributed significantly to its global numbers. Apple followed closely behind, holding 19 per cent market share with 55 million units shipped. The American company saw growth particularly in the United States and select markets in the Asia Pacific region.
Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi secured third position with a 14 per cent share, having shipped 41.8 million devices. Oppo and Vivo rounded out the top five, shipping 22.7 million and 22.9 million units respectively, each accounting for eight per cent of the global share.
The Canalys report highlighted diverging regional performances. While the US, China, and Africa experienced noticeable growth, markets such as India, Europe, and the Middle East remained subdued. In China, government subsidy initiatives played a key role in spurring consumer demand, whereas Africa benefitted from active retail expansion and increased promotional efforts.
In the United States, smartphone shipments surged by 12 per cent year-on-year, a boost largely attributed to Apple. The company reportedly ramped up production ahead of anticipated tariff changes, diversifying its manufacturing base. Although a majority of iPhones sold in the US continue to originate from China, Apple has accelerated production in India — covering the standard models of the iPhone 15 and 16, as well as increasing output of the 16 Pro series.
'With reciprocal tariff policies in flux, Apple is likely to further increase its India-based manufacturing for US-bound shipments, reducing its dependence on Chinese production,' said Le Xuan Chiew, Research Manager at Canalys.
Despite the sluggish overall growth, the Q1 figures reflect an evolving landscape where strategic manufacturing shifts and regional market dynamics continue to shape the global smartphone industry.

Nearly 4.2 lakh Indian students represented an increase of 11.8% compared to 2023, while the 3.2 lakh foreign student records from China, which is the other major source country, represented a small decrease of 0.25 percent compared to 2023. Indian students constitute nearly 27% of the total foreign student population in 2024, followed by Chinese at 20%. The data in this report is drawn from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a web-based system that the Department of Homeland Security uses to maintain and manage information on foreign students and exchange visitors. Indian students dominate the STEM field: While international students are eligible for a one year OPT, those from the Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) fields, post their graduation, get an additional two years of work experience under the OPT program. There were 1.94 lakh OPT students with both an employment authorization document (EAD) and who reported working for an employer in 2024, compared to 1.60 lakh 2023. This marks a 21.1 percent increase from 2023 and the fourth year of consecutive growth, states the ICE-Report. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students participated in the STEM-OPT extension program. The ICE-report points out that Indian students are particularly prominent in the post-completion OPT- STEM extension program, accounting for a substantial 48.0% of participants. and 20.4% from China.

Train, aid placement of 6,000 unemployed youth this year, IT Minister tells TASK
Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu advised Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) officials to consider pursuing a target of training at least 6,000 unemployed youth in advanced technologies and facilitate their placement in the current academic year. The Minister, who conducted a review meeting at the Secretariat on various initiatives undertaken by TASK, said this on Friday. He expressed satisfaction over the Academy's role in facilitating job placements for 4,100 candidates over the past year. TASK has made significant progress in equipping unemployed youth and students with industry-relevant skills, thereby enhancing their employability. At another level, the Academy has been aligning its training modules with industry needs and playing a pivotal role in placing skilled youth in relevant jobs, he said. During the last year, TASK provided training to record 1,37,677 students and 2,791 faculty members across various technical and skill domains, Mr. Sridhar Babu said. It played a key role in organising job fairs across 148 colleges in 21 districts and on corporate campuses, helping 4,100 talented individuals secure employment with a minimum annual package of ₹2.4 lakh, the Minister's office said in a release on Friday. ₹11 lakh annual package Notable among the hiring firms were American company Verisk Analytics that recruited tech professionals with an annual package of ₹11 lakh for its Hyderabad campus; UBS onboarding 63 candidates with a ₹6 lakh annual package and Hyundai Mobis training and hiring 42 candidates through TASK initiatives.
