Troian Bellisario talks playing a police officer in ‘On Call', reflects on ‘Pretty Little Liars' 15th anniversary
In On Call, Troian Bellisario plays Tracy Harmon, a veteran field training officer in the Long Beach Police Department, navigating the mental and physical toll of her job while mentoring rookie officer Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente). The role marks a striking shift from her Pretty Little Liars days, and Bellisario admits she was surprised when first approached to play a police officer. 'Tracy Harmon, veteran police officer, 40 years old. I thought, 'Oh my god, I'm never going to get this,'' she admits. 'I've never played anyone older than me, and certainly never a cop.' But something in the script clicked. 'The minute I started reading her words, I was enthralled. I'd never seen a cop show like this.' More from GoldDerby 'I Am: Celine Dion' will now compete for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking at Emmys - so what's the difference? Jacob Elordi reveals personal reason for joining 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North': 'It was something important to me' 'Étoile' creators say cinematographer M. David Mullen was their 'film school' Unlike traditional procedurals, Prime Video's On Call leans heavily into body cam footage and a half-hour drama format, a fusion Bellisario calls 'thrilling' and 'raw.' The real-time style gives the show a documentary edge, which grounds its emotional beats. 'It made me lean in,' she said. 'You're not watching a formula — you're watching a city in motion.' To prepare, Bellisario undertook ride-alongs with real officers and underwent a crash course in tactical training. 'They cleared out a whole office at Wolf Entertainment and basically did a mini-academy,' she said. One eye-opening moment? Witnessing how even a fender bender can disrupt an entire neighborhood. 'Just clearing an intersection after an accident — no injuries, thankfully — took so many moving parts. It made me realize how much officers do just to keep a city functional.' Amazon MGM Studios The shift from her Pretty Little Liars character Spencer to Tracy hasn't just been about genre — it's also been personal. 'With Pretty Little Liars, everything was a bit heightened,' Bellisario said. 'It was emotional, dramatic, a little soap-y — and Spencer was desperate for people to understand her.' But Harmon is the opposite. 'She doesn't care if you like her. She doesn't want to be your friend. She's here to do her job.' It's not just the emotional restraint that challenged Bellisario. 'A lot of what's demanded in this industry is superficial,' she says candidly. 'There's an unspoken expectation that women should be attractive, put together, desirable. Tracy wasn't written that way. Her strengths are her intelligence and her empathy.' In one memorable moment, Bellisario laughs as she remembers being repeatedly outrun by Larracuente on set. 'I'm a decent runner, and Brandon just smoked me every time. I was like, 'Please never write us running next to each other again!'' Yet the chemistry between Bellisario and the cast is undeniable. She praises the ensemble and executive producers Brenna Malloy and Tim Walsh — for creating a grounded and ego-free environment. 'It was one of those rare sets where you looked around and thought, 'Pinch me. Is this really happening?'' As she looks ahead, Bellisario is thoughtful about her future roles. 'I'm a mom of two now,' she says. 'Time is the most important factor. On Call was perfect because it was intense but short — eight episodes, half-hour format. I got to be the actor I want to be and the parent I need to be.' And as the 15th anniversary of Pretty Little Liars approaches, Bellisario is still moved by the legacy of Spencer Hastings. 'I'm so grateful,' she says. 'That show gave me a rocket ship of a career. It also gave me a family. The people I worked with — cast and crew — I still consider them that. It's rare. But it's also amazing to finally play someone like Tracy — someone rooted in reality who leads with her brain and her heart.' Does Sarah Jessica Parker Really Read Two Books a Day?
A very chic, 2025-era update to those Get Caught Reading posters that used to adorn everyone's local library dropped on social media this week: And Just Like That… star (and book imprint-haver) Sarah Jessica Parker shared with Page Six that she's currently reading two books a day in preparation to judge the Booker Prize. 'It's intense to be reading (that number of books), the volume is kind of hard to convey, what it's like to have as many books we are given the opportunity to read in a month…it's quite something,' Parker said. (Appropriately, she disclosed this information at…the PEN America Literary Gala.) X content This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. While her claim has given rise to some skepticism on social media—God forbid a woman have hobbies! Or access to audiobooks on set!—I'm going to trot out one of my extremely few childhood talents and say that it is most definitely possible to get through a book (or more) in a day. I've been speed-reading since I was a weird, undiagnosed-ADHD only child, to the point that my parents used to quiz me after I raced through the latest Pretty Little Liars installment they'd just bought me at Barnes & Noble to see if I'd retained literally any of it. Although I regularly failed those quizzes and continue to struggle with attention to detail, I still read quickly, especially if I have plenty of time on my hands and genuine interest in the topic. (Parker, for her part, acknowledged to Page Six that, with Season 3 of AJLT in the can, she knew that she 'had a different kind of time available to me, to read morning till night.') That said: Is it the most pleasant way to read? Definitely not; the last time I actually set the challenge of reading four books in a matter of days (all Sally Rooney novels, to research a piece I was writing), I did manage it—but eventually my head hurt and my mind swam and by the time I was done, I wished desperately to be numbed out in front of reality television.

Lucy Hale reveals best advice for mental health after feeling 'misunderstood'
Lucy Hale's got a secret, but she isn't looking to keep it. The actress, 35, is sharing just how she prioritizes her mental health while juggling a successful career in Hollywood. 'My biggest advice would be that we don't have to go through this journey alone,' Hale exclusively told The Post, before acknowledging her secret weapon: the newly published self-help book 'The Prism' by critically acclaimed author Laura Day. ''The Prism' shows us that we are the engineers of our own miracles, and there is strength in numbers.' 14 Lucy Hale posing with Laura Day's new book 'The Prism.' lucyhale/Instagram 14 Lucy Hale poses with critically acclaimed author Laura Day and her book 'The Prism.' lucyhale/Instagram The 'Pretty Little Liars' star revealed that throughout her life she has felt 'misunderstood and isolated, like no one could understand what I was going through.' Day's book is a 'practical guide that helps you recognize the patterns holding you back.' With a little help, Hale realized she wasn't the problem after all — far from it. 14 Lucy Hale and Laura Day host a book signing during the Los Angeles leg of the author's book tour. lauradayintuit/Instagram 14 Lucy Hale poses in front of the bookstore showcasing Laura Day's latest self-help guide 'The Prism.' lauradayintuit/Instagram 'If you don't feel supported or connected, keep looking, because you are simply in the wrong place or with the wrong people,' she insisted. 'One of my favorite messages in the book is that it is OK to love imperfect people imperfectly.' The 'Puppy Love' vet has been sober for three years and finds that along with looking for her tribe, Day's latest publication has helped her reshape her healing journey. 'True sobriety and recovery, to me, has been acknowledgement of self and putting in the work,' Hale explained. 'This road of healing has been a choice and one that I make every day. A lot of what I have done in recovery is about doing the inner work and taking responsibility for my life but also connecting to something more than myself for support. It has, in many ways, been a traditional recovery.' 14 Lucy Hale shares a laugh while on a book tour with Laura Day. lauradayintuit/Instagram 14 Laura Day poses in front of hundreds of copies of her new book 'The Prism.' lauradayintuit/Instagram 14 Lucy Hale on book tour with Laura Day. lauradayintuit/Instagram ''The Prism' turns that on its head,' the star confessed about how her road to recovery has shifted. 'Although it tells you where you may want to restructure yourself internally, it also focuses on engaging with the world in small ways that attract the people and situations that will change your life — and change you.' 'I use her tools all the time, so when I want a change they are my go-to's,' she continued. 'One example was that I was ready to expand a certain area of my life but felt stuck. It was what Laura would call a Second Ego Center issue, an issue around boundaries and abundance, and nourishment's part in creating both. Within a few weeks it was as if the world was presenting me with this expanded life and opportunities. That then changed me and made me challenge other areas of my life where I limit myself. And those began to change too.' ''The Prism' helps us work with the structure of who we are,' she explained, 'and when you address an issue in one area of your life, it addresses it in all areas of your life.' Although Hale 'will keep the specifics to myself' of just what she's working on behind the scenes, the actress did note 'it will be fun to watch it unfold in the next year.' 14 Demi Moore during the celebration for Laura Day's 2009 book, 'How to Rule the World from Your Couch.' The 'Scream 4' star was unsure if she wanted to share her journey with the public, but ultimately it has helped people in 'feeling seen,' which has been 'the biggest gift.' 'When I got sober, my intention was never to be the poster child of sobriety,' said Hale. 'I definitely had to go through my own process of getting sober,' Hale explained to the outlet. 'It took many, many, many years, many relapses, many dark moments, many falling on my face — quite literally — but figuratively as well, to figure out what was working in my life. [And] finding out why I was drinking, because removing alcohol is just one part of it.' Crediting her career to helping her through difficult times, the 'Truth or Dare' actress added, 'If I'm perfectly honest, without my career and without that creative outlet, I don't know if I would've made it.' 'I think that show and my love of what I do was my North Star, truly. It really gave me purpose, and still gives me purpose.'
