'I WILL erase your blackness.'
These words still haunt two Beaufort West students following what they believe was a racial attack by a man captured on camera spraying them with what he claimed was 'holy water' using a pesticide sprayer.
The two students, whose identity is known to the Cape Times, believe that the liquid inside the sprayer was in fact bleach.
In one of the videos that has since gone viral on social media, the man can be seen spraying the women, while they ask him to stop, desperately covering their faces with their hands folded over their heads.
'I will erase your blackness', he says in the video taken in the street.
He is also seen in their home where some of the women were half naked. They are all seen hiding in the back, while the man is walking through their home spraying the walls with 'holy water'.

One of the students told the Cape Times that they had been on their way to a nearby takeaway after midnight on Monday, when they were confronted by the man, a neighbour, who threw rubbish at them saying it belonged to them.
Recalling the incident, one of the victims said: 'We took the rubbish. Then we walked past his house and he said are you giving it back to me? Then he was pushing my cousin then I said 'don't push her, what did she do to you?'. Then the guy with the prayer came towards me and started to spray. After he sprayed me he went to my cousin and sprayed her. He (said he) was removing the blackness, he is going to change us to white. We don't deserve to be here, this is not our town, we should go home.'
'He didn't stop. I think his wife or girlfriend pulled me by my hair and I fell.'
The altercation went on for a while before the man with the sprayer went to their house.
'I am traumatised, we are so scared. He said it was holy water he was spraying on us to take out the demons. If it was holy water, why were our clothes damaged, why were our eyes red and itchy from the chemicals?'
The public management college students said they had been living in the town for two years and everything was fine until this incident.
Instead of reaching the takeaway, the women said they headed straight to the police station.
Approached for comment with the case number, the police said they would respond in due course.
EFF provincial treasurer and EFF Member of Parliament deployed to Beaufort West, Aishah Cassiem said she was concerned to learn that the case was allegedly withdrawn despite video evidence.
'When I called the station, I was told by the Brigadier that it was due to lack of evidence that the case was closed. He failed to give facts around the case of the female students and why it was closed despite evidence of the racial attack. He was more concerned about speaking about the 'complainant' (the racists) who in his view also opened a case against angry residents who showed up at their home but who later withdrew it.'
She said her party will not allow for such a case to be swept under the carpet.
'Will make sure those responsible for ensuring the safety of these young girls do so, especially when they are running to the police or courts for protection. We will not step back until justice has been served,' Cassiem said.

KwaZulu-Natal police honour excellence in service at the Provincial Excellence Awards

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi at the South African Police Service KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Excellence Awards at the Durban ICC. Image: Supplied Durban played host to the South African Police Service KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Excellence Awards on Friday night at the ICC, where exemplary police officers were recognised for their bravery and commitment in the line of duty. KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said police in KZN have been working hard to confront hardened criminals. 'If sentiments from residents are anything to go by, police in KwaZulu-Natal are on the right track to deliver the service that they need.' He said during the 2024/2025 financial year, various operations across the province led to the arrest of 144,019 suspects for various crime categories. 'The excellence that we are celebrating tonight is for those members who collectively and individually ensured that 5,016 firearms and over 51,000 rounds of ammunition were removed from the streets.' He said officers also successfully shut down 20,362 illegal shebeens in the province, which prevented murders, rapes, and assaults from happening. 'It has been proven that alcohol is the biggest contributing factor to crime in our province.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ According to Mkhwanazi, what was also being celebrated was officers' exceptional use of their resources and training to safeguard themselves, colleagues, and the public while pursuing dangerous armed criminals. He highlighted that excellent police and community partnership will indeed isolate criminals and create safer communities. 'Excellent detective work by our officers deserves to be celebrated. It takes a focused and dedicated investigating officer to put pieces together until a trail of clues emerges,' he said. Mkhwanazi stated that it was brilliant investigative work by detectives who traced the suspects who shot a South African Revenue Service advocate last year at a hotel in Umhlanga. 'During the year under review, our detectives secured a total of 125 life imprisonment sentences and a total of 1,114 years in jail for 1,239 accused who were found guilty on cases of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and rape,' he said. He noted that KwaZulu-Natal achieved 95% in the summative physical assessment, which is the highest in the country, as well as a firearm competency status of 98%. However, Mkhwanazi said between April 2024 and March 2025, KZN lost six police officers in the line of duty. He said four officers were shot and killed by criminals when they either responded to a robbery in progress or attended to an active crime scene. 'Police in KwaZulu-Natal are policing over 12.4 million counted citizens with just over 19,600 police officers. The killing of one police officer leaves so many community members vulnerable.' General Mkhwanazi congratulated the winners and emphasised that all the nominees deserve to be recognised. 'You are all winners, but only one will ascend this stage and represent you all,' he stated. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the biggest winner at the awards was Sergeant Nhlanhla Patrick Mhlongo from Greenwood Park police station in the eThekwini District. Sergeant Nhlanhla Patrick Mhlongo from Greenwood Park police station in the eThekwini District. Image: Supplied Netshiunda said that although he did not formally apply for the Excellence Award, Mhlongo's exceptional investigative work led to his selection. His success in securing convictions, including over 184 years of imprisonment for crimes like murder and armed robbery within a single year, was acknowledged by all 11 district commissioners, three deputy provincial commissioners, and the provincial commissioner. Sergeant Mhlongo solved the kidnapping and murder of a 21-year-old woman last seen in Umhlanga on Christmas Day 2024. He identified her manager as the suspect, who killed her at his home in Inanda and buried her in a shallow grave, according to Netshiunda. Netshiunda said Mhlongo was rewarded with a brand-new vehicle after he was summoned to the commissioner's office for an unknown misconduct; he was surprised and relieved to receive the vehicle instead, leading to tears of joy. Sergeant Msizi Leonard Mkhize, centre, from Mountain Rise police station in Pietermaritzburg. Image: Supplied Another special award went to investigating officer Sergeant Msizi Leonard Mkhize from Mountain Rise police station in Pietermaritzburg, who has cracked complex cases over the past financial year, said Netshiunda. His prize was a boat cruise with his partner. Premier Thami Ntuli said the event is more than just an awards ceremony, but also a moment of national importance. 'It is a pause in our daily fight against crime, to reflect, to recognise, and to reward excellence; it is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the outstanding men and women in blue who, against all odds, have chosen service over self, duty over comforts, and country over personal gain,' he said. Premier Thami Ntuli congratulated the award recipients, further stating that their achievements are not only a source of pride for their families and colleagues but a beacon of hope for KZN. 'You are an inspiration to your peers and a reminder to all South Africans that excellence in public service is still possible and indeed alive in our police ranks,' Ntuli said. Batohi stands her ground as NPA prepares new Gupta extradition bid

National Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Shamila Batohi announced that the NPA was working on extraditing the Gupta brothers. Image: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Head, Advocate Shamila Batohi, has revealed that they were in the process of renewing extradition attempts of the Gupta brothers. This is despite criticism of failed prosecutions and extradition. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Friday, Batohi said work was being done to ensure that the brothers were brought to justice. 'The NPA is working very hard, and I don't want to give a time frame, but I am certainly hoping that within the next couple of months, they will be able to put together a new extradition with additional charges,' she said. Batohi said that the previous application failed without any explanation on why their numerous notes sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had not been responded to. However, Batohi stressed that they would still face the same challenges because they didn't know what was the cause of the delay initially. 'We certainly don't want to experience the same fate with the new extradition application when we don't have some of the reasons from the UAE court denying the first application,' she said. The attempt to extradite the Gupta brothers was made in 2023. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The Gupta brothers are accused of using their close relationship with former President Jacob Zuma to influence senior government decisions and appointments. This was for them to also profit financially from the state. The Zuma and Gupta families—collectively referred to as 'The Zuptas'—have been implicated in allegations of state capture, though both parties deny any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, political parties have been split over whether Batohi should step down or not. The call for her removal stems from NPA's high-profile failures, eroding public trust, and casting doubt on its ability to deliver justice. One of the most prominent disappointments has been the botched prosecution of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, who faced multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault and human trafficking. ActionSA has urged Batohi to resign, pointing to a series of high-profile shortcomings within the NPA. In contrast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed its opposition to her dismissal, signalling continued support for her tenure. But responding to criticism, Batohi said, she is not going anywhere. IOL Politics

Tragic shooting at Cape Town taxi rank claims four lives amid ongoing conflict

Police and crime scene investigators at the Mfuleni taxi rank after a tragic shooting claimed four lives and left three others injured this morning. SAPS urges anyone with information to assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Image: Henk Kruger / Independent Media Desperate families stood outside the police cordon, anxiously awaiting to identify the bodies of their loved ones, who had been gunned down in an attack at a Cape Town taxi rank. Many arrived in large numbers as the police combed the scene for clues. One woman explained that she had been told her husband was among the four victims killed at the Mfuleni taxi rank on Monday at around 6am. 'I called my husband's number several times. It rang but wasn't answered, and that's when I knew he had been killed.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Four Codeta members were killed and three were injured, including a commuter. Image: Henk Kruger / Independent Media The family requested to see his body, in accordance with their cultural practices, to send off his spirit before it was removed from the scene. However, the police requested that they wait until the area was cleared to avoid further chaos. Major-General Bongani Maqashalala, deputy police commissioner for the detection division, confirmed that two gunmen had stormed a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) office, killing four men and injuring three others. 'One of the three injured is a commuter. We believe the suspects used high-calibre firearms, as evidenced by the crime scene. We have since increased police presence to ensure the safety of commuters.' A distraught woman is comforted by the police as she tries to run to her shot brother at Mfuleni taxi rank in Cape Town. Image: Henk Kruger / Independent Media Maqashalala suggested that the motive behind the attack was related to the ongoing conflict within the taxi industry. 'Codeta has a permit to operate in Somerset West but does not have a taxi rank there. We believe this is causing tension with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata),' he said. The situation is being monitored by the Department of Mobility. The police have announced a reward of R100,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge explained that the association had previously written to the MEC of Mobility on August 29, 2024, notifying them of partial services on the M18 route, as Cata operators had prohibited their return with passengers. 'Despite a notice issued on June 3, 2025, to resume operations, upon doing so, Cata operators blocked legal operations, leading to a meeting scheduled for next week. Unfortunately, the dispute escalated into violence, resulting in this tragic loss of life.' Codeta has called on the Western Cape government to strengthen the regulatory framework to protect both taxi operators and commuters. They also urged for enhanced safety measures to prevent further incidents. The shooting occurred just across the road from the Mfuleni satellite police station. 'The conduct of the attackers showed this was no random act; it was planned. The police station was operational at the time, and we had been monitoring the Somerset West route. This remains one of the motives we are investigating,' Maqashalala added. In response, police have deployed additional officers around taxi ranks and have identified potential threats. Maqashalala also urged taxi association members to remain calm. 'We request their cooperation, and we are scheduled to meet with the Department of Mobility. To the community, we ask that they come forward with any information that could assist us in the investigation.' Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais expressed deep concern over the violence. 'It is devastating to see such incidents in our communities. We've been working closely with the SAPS and LEAP services to apprehend the perpetrators and stabilise the industry. The illegal firearms on our streets are also a major concern. We all know that the SAPS is understaffed, and that is why we have been calling for the devolution of policing powers to the province."
