Kevin Lerena stops Serhiy Radchenko in explosive return to the ring

South African boxer Kevin Lerena made a triumphant return to the ring with a dominant third-round stoppage of Ukraine's Serhiy Radchenko at the BetSun Arena in Pretoria on Thursday night.
After more than a year of inactivity, the Johannesburg-born Lerena wasted no time in asserting his dominance, thrilling the home crowd with a clinical and aggressive performance that improved his record to 31 wins and 3 losses, with 15 knockouts.
From the opening bell, Lerena controlled the pace of the bout, using his jab to keep Radchenko at bay and setting up punishing power shots that repeatedly pierced through his opponent's high guard.
Radchenko, now 11-8 (5 KOs), struggled to mount any meaningful offence in return.
The second round proved decisive, as Lerena landed a series of heavy left hooks, the first of which drove Radchenko into the ropes and the second dropping him hard to the canvas.
Though Radchenko bravely got to his feet and attempted to survive by clinching, another knockdown followed shortly thereafter.
Despite two knockdowns and signs of visible distress, Radchenko's corner allowed him to continue into the third round.
Kevin Lerena capitalised swiftly, landing a final combination that dropped Radchenko to his knees.
This time, his corner threw in the towel, prompting the referee to wave off the contest.
Speaking after the fight, Lerena expressed his readiness to climb back into the international spotlight and issued a direct challenge to Britain's Fabio Wardley.
'I want bridgerweights, heavyweights – let's go!' Lerena declared in the ring, drawing loud cheers from his supporters.
Lerena, who famously dropped Daniel Dubois three times in the first round of their 2022 clash before being stopped himself, now looks poised for another big-name bout in the heavyweight or bridgerweight divisions.

Kaizer Chiefs eye Slovakian forward but fans not impressed

Kaizer Chiefs have set their sights on Slovakian attacker Robert Polievka, currently playing for MTK Budapest in Hungary, according to Sportswire . The club aims to strengthen its front line ahead of a crucial season, with continental football on the horizon. However, the pursuit won't come cheap. Polievka remains under contract with MTK Budapest until 2027, meaning Amakhosi will need to pay a transfer fee to secure his services. Despite being a forward, Polievka's goal return does little to inspire confidence. He has managed just four goals in 26 matches across all competitions, a tally far from what Chiefs supporters might expect from a potential frontline spearhead. Kaizer Chiefs find themselves in need of a proven centre-forward after parting ways with Ranga Chivaviro. The former Marumo Gallants striker looked promising early last season, netting two goals in his first three appearances. However, his game time dwindled as the season progressed, prompting the club to allow his contract to lapse at the end of June. Amakhosi will be desperate to avoid another disappointing league campaign. They finished ninth this past season, missing out on a top-eight finish for the second year running. The club's leading scorers, Wandile Duba and Glody Lilepo, only managed five goals each, with Lilepo joining midway through the season. There's renewed optimism at Naturena following their Nedbank Cup triumph, which ended a decade-long trophy drought. The victory also secured Chiefs a spot in next season's CAF Confederation Cup, heightening the urgency to reinforce the squad with quality signings. 'We're looking to better our attack and Polievka is one of the players we're monitoring closely for a while,' a source revealed. Should Kaizer Chiefs sign Robert Polievka? Transfer news: Mako said 'yes' to Chiefs and 'no' to Pirates

As reported last weekend, Kaizer Chiefs are in advanced talks to sign the 31-year-old left-back Paseka Mako. Orlando Pirates announced that the Zebediela-born Mako has left the Buccaneers after seven years at the Rand Stadium. Mako won four MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies. An insider has now revealed that Mako agreed to join Kaizer Chiefs before turning down Orlando Pirates' new offer to keep him at the club. 'Kaizer Chiefs bosses signed me, not the coach' – Gilbert Orlando Pirates legend lists three names for the armband 'Pirates did everything to keep Mako, but the player had already made up his mind,' a source told Kick Off . 'Pirates were keen to extend his stay at the club but believed (he had) already agreed terms with Kaizer Chiefs after the Nedbank Cup final in Durban. 'There were even bigger plans to keep Mako beyond his playing days at Pirates, but the player had already made up his mind to go to Kaizer Chiefs,' the source concluded. Reports from previous months confirmed that coach Nasreddine Nabi and Amakhosi were set to prioritise the left-back position this winter, with Stellenbosch FC's Fawaaz Basadien the dream target. According to last weekend's report, Kaizer Chiefs are moments away from signing Mako on a free deal. 'SABC Sport can exclusively reveal that former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako could be heading to Naturena as talks with Kaizer Chiefs have progressed to an advanced stage,' Mazola Molefe reported. 'According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the 31-year-old has entered into talks with their Soweto rivals over a potential move to The Glamour Boys ahead of the upcoming season. Player of the Season offers himself to Chiefs and Pirates Mako endured an injury-ravaged season with Orlando Pirates last term. He only made 17 appearances, mainly as a substitute, while the 34-year-old Deon Hotto was a regular starter. The Buccaneers also used the newly promoted Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Yanga Madiba in that left-back role. 'Mako now presents a viable option and will arrive as a free agent, should the finer details be ironed out and all parties involved are satisfied,' Molefe added. Mako, whose football career started at Mamelodi Sundowns' development setup, made his professional debut in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with the defunct Cape Town All Stars, before moving to Chippa United and eventually Orlando Pirates. While the Soweto giants are keen to bolster their attacking options. They face fierce competition not just from domestic rivals but from international clubs too. Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca and Russian Premier League side FC Baltika have also expressed concrete interest in landing the striker. But it's believed that Sekhukhune United are preparing to sign him as a replacement for Andy Boyeli. Who is wanted by Pyramids FC in Egypt. So as I have said, let's wait and see as there are many other factors around his move from Sundowns. But interest in him keeps on growing,' the source added.
