Every agency stepped in to support affected students: BJ Medical College dean Dr Minakshi Parekh

Hindustan Times6 hours ago

Dr Minakshi Parekh, dean of the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad that lost at least four students in the Air India flight 171 crash, shares details of the ground situation, ongoing relief efforts, and the emotional toll on students and families in an interview to Prawesh Lama. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner hit the medical college's hostel buildings and dining halls on June 12, leaving four hostel buildings' facade charred, and the two mess buildings partially collapsed. Edited excerpts:
What is the current situation at the college?
Every agency has stepped in to support the affected students. Rooms have been arranged for all students, while food is now being provided at the postgraduate mess since the undergraduate mess was destroyed. Resident doctors have been moved to vacant flats and temporary accommodations, including those provided by the Lions Club.
NGOs and private hospitals, too, have come forward offering free treatment to injured students. Every student and resident doctor has been accommodated, and our medical students are actively helping families—providing counselling and assisting with blood sample collection.
There were reports of a scarcity of rooms at the hospital. How is that being handled?
There is no scarcity of rooms. In fact, government officials and foreign embassy representatives visiting the crash site are also staying in our rooms. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) officers are also working from the hospital complex since it is located close to the crash site.
One of our rooms has been converted into a main office for AAIB, equipped with everything they need. A second office has also been set up at the hostel. We've repurposed spaces originally meant for other functions to ensure the investigators can work efficiently.
How are you dealing with student deaths, injuries, and grieving families?
More than us, it is the most challenging time for the families. However, one case that has stayed with me is from the first day — when a man insisted on seeing the bodies of his three family members in the post-mortem room. He was inconsolable. Despite our best efforts to comfort him, protocol didn't allow us to let him in. It took time, but around 12.30 am, he finally agreed to wait outside.
Have grief counsellors been engaged at the hospital?
We've taken great care to ensure that communication with families is handled sensitively. How do you tell a man that his son's death has been confirmed or how do you tell him to give his blood sample to confirm the death? Some have anxiety, others are disturbed, and some are breaking down. There are chances of people developing post-traumatic stress.
Hence, we've deployed trained counsellors at three key points — the blood sample collection centre, the control room in the superintendent's office (where families are informed once DNA results are confirmed), and the post-mortem room where bodies are handed over. Our MD psychiatrists are conducting live sessions with families even now (she points towards a live CCTV feed showing ongoing counselling sessions at the hospital).
Can you explain the DNA collection and reporting process?
We're collecting DNA samples from all relatives on-site. Testing is being done by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), which is part of the National Forensic Science University. The FSL team is working around the clock. Once analysis is complete, reports are sent to the superintendent's office at Civil Hospital. Families are then contacted with the results.
Three families from abroad are expected to arrive tomorrow to receive the results. The government is handling the public release of numbers and official data.

Air India Crash: 4 Theories That Could Explain The Deadly Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Crash In Ahmedabad What caused the horrific crash of Air India Flight AI171 in Ahmedabad, killing 241 onboard and several on ground? Experts are probing four chilling theories: (1) A single engine failure followed by the crew forgetting to retract the landing gear, leading to a stall; (2) a rare dual engine failure that turned the Dreamliner into a glider with no time to react; (3) flaps in the wrong position, reducing lift during a critical moment; or (4) a catastrophic mistake where pilots shut down the wrong engine. With the black box recovered and aviation authorities tightening checks, the nation waits for answers. Air India crash: ‘Hero' Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's crucial midair call saved dozens of families in three-storey building

Sumeet Sabharwal, captain of Air India flight 171 enroute to London's Gatwick airport which crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after take off on June 12 and killed 241 on board, has been hailed as 'hero' by locals as he reportedly diverted the ill-fated aircraft at the last second to prevent any apartment block, saving many lives, The Sun reported. All 18 families residing in the three-story building beneath the flight path are certain that Captain Sumeet Sabharwal saved their lives. His Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which was heading straight toward their homes, got diverted as skillful handling of the emergency averted the disaster at that place. 'The building was shaking. We were so scared. There was chaos in the street and fire and smoke. Any closer and we would have died. The pilot saved us. We have always worried this might happen because the planes go over so low," The Sun quoted Geeta Patni, 48, one of the closest residents to the crash site, as saying. Jahanvi Rajput, 28, said, "Thanks to the pilot Captain Sabharwal, we survived. He's a hero. It is because of him we are alive. The green space next to us was visible to him and that's where he went.' 'If the plane had crashed into this residential area, there would have been hundreds more victims," Mum-of-two Chancal Bai, 50, stated. The plane carrying 242 passengers saw one British survivor. It crashed into the BJ medical college, further taking lives of 29, including 5 MBBS students. It had turned into fireball of devastation. Captain Sumeet, 54, was the son of an officer from India's civil aviation authority. He was a seasoned pilot with 8,200 hours of flight experience and also the primary caregiver for his father, now in his 80s, whom he called just prior to the takeoff. According to colleagues, who paid tribute to Captain Sumeet from Mumbai, 'He was a good, quiet person.' He had recently showed his desire to take a step back from aviation to care for his ailing father Pushkaraj, an India Today report said. 'Sumit had spoken to him just three days ago, saying he wanted to leave flying and come home to care for him. His father couldn't say a word. His eyes were filled with tears,' the report quoted family friend Lande as saying.

Watch: crane lifts Air India plane's wreckage from crash site in Ahmedabad

Days after Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner headed to London crashed minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, a video of authorities removing the aircraft's wreckage is doing the rounds on the Internet. The aircraft, which was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew, to Britain's Gatwick airport, began losing altitude just seconds after take-off on June 12, before crashing and erupting into a fireball, marking the world's deadliest aviation disaster in over a decade. Shared by an X handle @Turbinetraveler, the viral video shows the crane lifting the aft fuselage section (rear part) of the Air India plane and removing it from the building. The aircraft plunged with a vertical speed of 475 feet per minute, its tail crashing into the first floor of the B J Medical College hostel's mess, killing four medical students and the wife of a doctor, and leaving 20 students injured. In a miraculous turn of events, one passenger survived, 40-year-old British Indian national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who had been seated in 11A. An officer said that Air Traffic Control (ATC) records, reviewed by the Gujarat Police, indicate the aircraft may have taxied at least 300 metres farther than usual on the runway. 'It took off at 1.38 pm and just after a minute, around 1.39-1.40 pm, the pilot sent out a 'No thrust… May Day…May Day' message, following which communication was lost and a crash was heard,' the officer said. On Saturday, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu informed that investigators would examine all circulating theories surrounding the crash. He further emphasised that aircraft are highly complex machines and determining the exact cause, or combination of causes, requires a thorough and meticulous investigation. The video of the deadly crash, which is all over social media, was shot by a Class 12 student Aryan Asari.
