Pakistani immigrant dies in Brooklyn fire escape tragedy; know who he was
Ashiq Hussein, 53, a Pakistani immigrant living in Brooklyn's Sunset Park, tragically lost his life after a fire broke out in his apartment building on May 19. The fire, which started on the second floor of 3902 9th Avenue early that morning, prompted a swift response from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), who arrived around 7 AM to battle the blaze.
In a heartbreaking moment captured on video and circulated by local news, Hussein was seen trying to escape the flames from a third-floor window using an FDNY ladder. As he attempted to step onto the upper section of the ladder, it suddenly pulled away. He fell onto a store awning below before hitting the pavement. He was immediately taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The city's medical examiner confirmed that the cause of death was severe trauma to his head and chest.

Hussein had been sharing the apartment with two people. A friend told the New York Daily News that he was working as a taxi driver, trying to build a better future for his family in Pakistan. He had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of his wife, three daughters, and son, hoping to reunite with them in New York. 'He just wanted them to be successful and be able to contribute towards not just their own family but also toward humanity in some way,' his friend was quoted as saying. 'He was an awesome dad. It's a loss that I don't think anyone is going to get over any time soon.'
The FDNY released a statement acknowledging the tragedy and said a full investigation is underway. 'As is standard practice, we began a proactive investigation of the facts and circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a civilian immediately,' the department stated, noting that Fire Marshals, Fire Operations, and the Division of Safety are all involved.
Two other residents were hurt during the fire, and one firefighter sustained a leg injury but is expected to recover. Authorities are still working to determine what caused the blaze.

Espionage case: Hisar court rejects YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's bail plea
A Hisar court on Wednesday denied bail to YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested last month on espionage charges. A day earlier, Jyoti's lawyer Kumar Mukesh had filed the bail application and the matter was placed before judicial magistrate first class Sunil Kumar today, who rejected the bail plea. On June 9, the court extended her judicial custody by two weeks till June 23. On May 26, Jyoti was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the court. Talking to HT over the phone, her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said that he had objected to the sections imposed against Jyoti Malhotra in the first information report (FIR). 'As the investigation is currently underway in the case, the police were against her bail plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea. She went to Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 and at that time, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was in force but the Hisar police booked her under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, which was Section 124-A (sedition ) under the IPC at that time. This section was kept in abeyance, which is why she can't be prosecuted this,' Kumar added. He said that the FIR was registered on the basis of her questioning on May 15, which is not legally permissible because a person can't become a witness against himself/herself. 'The police could not place any evidence which proves that she was involved in spying. The Hisar superintendent of police (SP) himself said that she had no access to any military or defence related information but she has connections with some Pakistani operatives. If they have not recovered any information from her possession related to sharing sensitive information, then Sections 3 (spying) and 5 (communicating secret information to unauthorised individuals) of the Official Secrets Act, should be dropped from the FIR. The police should provide call details with such operatives. The police will have to prove that any of her Pakistani contacts are intelligence operatives,' he added. Travel blogger Jyoti, 33, a resident of Hisar, was arrested on May 16 for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani operatives.

Haryana: Hisar Court rejects bail plea of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra
Hisar (Haryana) [India], June 11 (ANI): A court in Haryana's Hisar, on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information and being in continuous contact with a Pakistani citizen. Jyoti's lawyer, Advocate Kumar Mukesh said, 'Her bail plea was filed before JMFC Sunil Kumar's court and a reply from Police was sought today. After the reply from Police, I argued in the evening, the Court rejected her bail plea this evening.' Earlier on Monday, a court in Hisar extended the judicial custody of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra by 14 days. According to her lawyer, Kumar Mukesh, the court had previously sent Malhotra to judicial custody on May 26, which concluded on June 9. Malhotra appeared before the court of Sunil Kumar on June 9, and the next hearing has been scheduled for June 23. Malhotra will appear in court again on that date. Kumar Mukesh said, 'The last hearing took place on 26th May, during which the court of Sunil Kumar had sent Jyoti Malhotra to 14 days of judicial custody, which concluded today, 9th June. She appeared again before the same court today, and now the next hearing has been scheduled for 23rd June. Jyoti Malhotra will appear in court again on that date.' He said that the police are analysing Jyoti's bank account and the data recovered from the phone and laptop. He said that the podcast of Jyoti Malhotra with a Pakistani YouTuber that has surfaced talks about brotherhood only. Earlier on May 29, the lawyer said that Jyoti has made videos for her YouTube channel at different places and has also gone abroad with a visa. On May 26, the court sent Jyoti to judicial custody for fourteen days. Jyoti allegedly met a Pakistani officer, Ahsan-ur-Rahim, in Delhi, travelled to Pakistan twice, and shared sensitive information. During the preliminary investigation, the woman told the police that she went to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 to apply for a visa and met a man named Ahsan-ur-Rahim, alias Danish. BSF foils narcotics smuggling bid on Punjab border; seizes heroin
ANI 12 Jun 2025, 00:03 GMT+10 Amritsar (Punjab) [India], June 11 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics into India via drones from Pakistan, leading to the recovery of heroin and a drone along the Punjab border. Acting on specific intelligence, BSF troops deployed robust anti-drone measures and seized 529 grams of heroin near Havelian village in Tarn Taran district. In a separate operation near Roranwala Kalan in Amritsar district, they recovered a DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone, suspected to have been used for cross-border smuggling, said the BSF. Additionally, in a joint operation with the Punjab Police near Wan village in Tarn Taran district, the BSF seized 560 grams of heroin. The heroin packets were packed in colored tape, fitted with illuminating strips and nylon loops--a clear indication of drone-dropped consignments from Pakistan. Swift action of BSF troops once again foiled Pakistani smugglers' nefarious plans to push narcotics into India via drones. Further investigations are underway. (ANI)
