German police arrest Iraqi man over Passau car attack

Shafaq News/ German police arrested a 48-year-old Iraqi man after he allegedly rammed his car into a group of people in Passau, southern Germany, on Saturday evening, injuring five. Authorities said the suspect faces attempted murder charges. Initial investigations suggested the attack was deliberate, with police indicating it may have been linked to a custody dispute between the man and his wife. Among the injured were the suspect's 40-year-old wife and their five-year-old daughter. Police said the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident and has been questioned, although it remains unclear whether he has provided any statements. Three of the five injured, including the suspect's daughter, have been released from the hospital. His wife and another woman remain hospitalized, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Israel: Top Hamas Commander Mohammad al-Sinwar's body recovered

Shafaq News/ Israeli forces have recovered the body of senior Hamas commander Mohammad al-Sinwar during an underground operation beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, the military reported on Sunday. Forensic testing confirmed al-Sinwar's identity, according to military spokesperson Avichay Adraee. The raid, conducted in coordination with the Shin Bet security agency, also yielded weapons, documents, and personal belongings tied to al-Sinwar and Mohammad Shabaneh, commander of Hamas' Rafah Brigade. Al-Sinwar, the brother of former Hamas leader Yahya al-Sinwar, was reportedly killed in a May 13 airstrike targeting a Hamas tunnel network. Israeli media reported the recovery of multiple bodies from beneath the hospital complex. Troops also confiscated command infrastructure and intelligence materials now undergoing analysis. Yahya al-Sinwar, accused of masterminding the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, was killed in an Israeli strike in October 2024. With both brothers now confirmed dead, Israel claims it has neutralized two of Hamas' top military operatives. The development comes as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza. Since October 7, Gaza's Health Ministry has reported over 54,700 deaths and more than 125,800 injuries.

Syria: Over 7,000 killed since Assad regime toppled

Shafaq News / 7,670 people have been killed across Syria between December 8, 2024 — the date marking the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime — and June 6, 2025, according to a new report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The report documented 5,784 civilian deaths during this period, including 306 children and 422 women. Civilians made up 75.4% of the total death toll, highlighting a surge in attacks on non-combatants. The Observatory linked the spike in March deaths to a surge in summary executions and retaliatory attacks, particularly along the Syrian coast, where it recorded 1,726 mass killings in that month alone. It warned that ongoing impunity fuels the crisis, arguing that the lack of accountability and unchecked proliferation of armed actors continue to erode any prospects for lasting peace. The report urged the formation of an independent international investigative mechanism to prosecute those responsible and enforce compliance with international humanitarian law, calling for disarmament and tighter security, especially in areas beyond state control.
