Chelsea must control 'focal point' Welbeck and 'pacy' Lamptey
Former Brighton and Chelsea defender Gary Chivers says "target man" Danny Welbeck and "superb" Tariq Lamptey impressed in Brighton's FA Cup fourth-round win over the Blues, adding that Enzo Maresca should be looking out for the two in-form players when the Blues travel to Amex Stadium for the second time in a week.
Speaking on BBC Radio Sussex's Albion Unlimited podcast, Chivers said: "They have an experienced player in Danny Welbeck. He knows where to run, when to hold the ball up and when to give it.
"Long may he stay fit because a fit Welbeck, playing at his peak, is brilliant for Brighton. He is the target man, he knows the game inside and out, and he brings players into the game. He is the focal point.
"Joao Pedro likes to drop off between the midfield and forward positions, but with Danny Welbeck you know that you can hit something long and he will hold it up and challenge for the ball. We do ever so well with Welbeck in the side.
"Tariq Lamptey gave Malo Gusto a hell of a roasting. It looked like he had a point to prove.
"He has got so much pace as well. He was just running riot every time he got the ball. Whether he went inside or outside, he put some lovely balls in the box.
"He just looked a danger every time and he was a threat all game. I thought he was superb."

La Liga superstar reluctant to join Arsenal or Chelsea this summer
Arsenal have already all-but completed a deal to sign Martin Zubimendi, but he may not be the only La Liga player to make the move to north London this summer. They also have a strong interest in Nico Williams, but their chances of signing him during the transfer window looks to have reduced. Williams continues to be one of Athletic Club's star players, but because of this, he has attracted significant interest. Barcelona failed to sign him last summer, and 12 months, new names have entered the running – specifically, there has been interest shown from Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Nico Williams wants to stay in La Liga But the chances that any of those teams gets a deal done this summer are looking slim. As per Sport, Williams is reluctant to move outside of Spain, despite the fact that Arsenal and Chelsea would both be willing to activate the release clause in his Athletic contract. Imave via Marca / Ricardo Larreina Despite rejecting Barcelona last summer, Williams has an interest in joining the La Liga champions in 2025. But unfortunately for the Spain international, they are not considering him as an option at this stage, with Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford being the club's primary left wing targets. Advertisement At this stage, the most likely scenario is that Williams signs a new contract with Athletic. His current deal expires in 2027, so there has been increased jeopardy about his future. But if Barcelona (or Real Madrid) do not come calling, there is a good chance that the 22-year-old extends his stay in Bilbao. Should he do this, Athletic would look to significantly increase the value of his release clause, which currently stands at €60m. If this happens, the chances of a future transfer would decrease by a considerable amount, considering that Los Leones very rarely negotiate the sales of their star players.

Why Chelsea want to sign Jamie Gittens
Jamie Gittens looks set to become the latest member of Chelsea's creche. According to The Athletic, personal terms between the 20-year-old and the West London club have already been agreed, but Borussia Dortmund rejected their latest offer. His reported seven-year contract would keep him at Stamford Bridge until he's 27, so long as the move works out for all parties, of course. It's an investment in the future, something Chelsea have done a lot of recently, so why is Gittens the latest to be of interest? Filling a hole For all the money they've spent, the left-wing position is a weird one at Chelsea. Jadon Sancho has been unceremoniously sent back to Man United, Joao Felix doesn't appear to have any future at the club, and Mykhaylo Mudryk is nowhere to be seen. Advertisement Gittens is a pure left-winger, although he has been deployed in the number ten and as a wing-back previously at Dortmund. He's also right-footed, preferring to cut in and take on a defender and shoot rather than whip in balls, exactly the type of winger that Enzo Maresca seems to love. The fact that he's young and English is a huge plus. If Chelsea's recent transfer activity is anything to go by, they want the club to be a destination for the best young home-grown talent, filling the squad with top-class international talent when necessary. Man City connections Chelsea's Man City links run deep. Cole Palmer is obviously the most prominent; he's become one of the best players in the league since swapping Manchester for London, but there are plenty of other connections between the two clubs, especially behind the scenes. Advertisement Enzo Maresca, and the two directors Joe Shields and Laurence Stewart have all spent time with the Man City academy before moving on and eventually ending up at Chelsea. Those connections are valuable when it comes to learning a player's ability at attitude. Gittens is just the latest on a long list of players who have spent time at the two clubs, and the way things are going, he's very unlikely to be the last. An opportunity in the market Chelsea aren't afraid to pursue what they believe to be an opportunity in the market. Back in January, Dortmund were valuing Gittens at around €100 million, now, it's looking like the youngster will cost around half that after their latest offer of €35 million was rejected. Advertisement Despite what a lot of people may think, Chelsea don't just sign players for the sake of it. In today's market, for a position they've been looking to bolster, the deal for Gittens makes a lot of sense from a financial standpoint. They'll also be aware of his pretty drastic drop-off in form since the turn of the year. Gittens scored 12 goals and provided three assists in his 48 games last season, but only three of those goal contributions came this year. Verdict It's a relatively low-risk deal for Chelsea, so long as they don't pay more than the reported £50 million asking price. Gittens still has a long way to go; he's far from the finished article, but in the right environment and with the right coaching, he could be a quality player. Get Football | Alex Roberts
