Thug Life to soon release on OTT? Amid poor box office performance, here's what we know about Kamal Haasan's film
Kamal Haasan's latest release Thug Life might be released on OTT sooner than expected, as per multiple reports. The film marks the reunion between filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Haasan. It ran into trouble due to Haasan's controversial 'Tamil-Kannada" remark and suffered a major loss at the box office over its blockage in Karnataka. Thug Life is a gangster drama, also starring Silambarasan. Before its release on June 5, Kamal Haasan had shared that Thug Life would mark its OTT debut after 8 weeks of its theatrical release. The film is said to be streamed online on Netflix. It seems Thug Life can be out on OTT after four weeks of its theatrical release now, reported M9 News. Reportedly, the OTT giant is evaluating the 8-week schedule since the film received an underwhelming response at the box office. Thug Life was released on Thursday and saw a decent start, making a business of ₹ 15. 5 crore [Tamil: ₹ 13.35 crore; Hindi: 0.65 crore; Teleugu: 1.5 crore]. However, over the first weekend, instead of showing growth, the film saw a sharp decline in its earnings. On Monday, it only minted ₹ 2.3 crore [Tamil: ₹ 1.9 crore ; Hindi: 0.1 crore; Telugu: ₹ 0.3 crore]. Going by the early estimates now, the film made ₹ 1.75 crore on Tuesday. However, the makers of the film are yet to make an official announcement about the OTT release. Talking about Thug Life's OTT release, Kamal Haasan was quoted saying by PTI, "It is not even an experiment, it's a pragmatic thing to do. I'm glad that the OTT (Netflix) agreed. We sat together, and it was not a negotiation. It's a plan, which maybe others could follow. 'It will make the industry healthy and we are glad that we were the first to be there to avail of that opportunity.' Thug Life is directed by Mani Ratnam, and co-written by Kamal Haasan who is also starring in the lead. It also stars Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf. The film is produced by Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies.

Chennai Book Park sees a steady stream of crowd on Day 1
Status: cleared Chennai: Those entering the Central Metro station now have one-stop access to books from prominent publishers, spanning from Higginbothams to Katha, at the Chennai Book Park, opened by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday. An initiative of the School Education Department to kindle a reading habit among the public, the book park saw a steady stream of visitors on the first day. Nestled between a pharmacy and an eatery, en route to the ticket counter, one would rarely miss the park. Decked up with flowers and carpets, over 4,300 titles from over 13 publishers were on display. Among these, 84 titles were released on Tuesday. Most of the stalls belonged to the Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC), which manages the functioning of the park. Nakkheeran, Shanti, and Coral were among the prominent publishers who set up stalls. Schoolbooks, guides, and books for competitive exams, mostly Tamil, were available. The cost of books ranged from ₹50 to ₹3,500. The CMRL is yet to fix signage for the park at entries and exits. TNTESC superintendent G Balaji said the park will be open from 9 am to 9 pm. "The schedule on weekend timings will be finalised in a couple of days. At least three staff, including security personnel, will man the premises," he said. Chezhian Kumarasamy, Executive Director of an advertising firm, said it was good to see people at a book park in a digital age where mobile phones call the shots. "I wish more such parks would be opened in places such as airports and MRTS stations," he said. Some, like law student L Lakshmi, who walked in thinking there would be a lot of autobiographies and non-fiction Tamil books, said she was surprised to find English books on self-help. Publication managers, however, aren't too optimistic about sales. "I don't know how many people will walk in. They are in a hurry to board trains," said Sivakumar, manager of one of the publications. By 8:50 pm, the facility registered a sale of about ₹35,000. The stalls have tied up with the TNTESC on a revenue-sharing model, said Katha Books CEO Ravin Carr. "Between 25% and 40% of the sale cost (depending on the size of the stalls) will be shared with the govt," he said. At the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated 110 library buildings built across all districts at a cost of ₹29.80 crore and 70 special libraries at bus stands, hospitals, and district collectorates. ZEE5 aims to slash operating losses by up to 60% in FY26
Mumbai: ZEE5 , the streaming platform owned by Zee Entertainment , aims to reduce its operating losses by 50-60% in FY26, president of digital businesses and platforms Amit Goenka said. The OTT industry has shifted its focus to achieving profitability after years of heavy investments in subscriber acquisition, which had taken a toll on their P&L. In FY25, ZEE5 reduced its Ebitda loss to ₹548 crore from ₹1,105 crore in the previous year. The company has been aggressively cutting costs to achieve its goal of an 18-20% Ebitda margin in FY26. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo "This year, we are striving to reduce our Ebitda losses by more than 50-60% compared to last year. ZEE5 is the only division in Zee Entertainment that is not yet profitable, and we are looking to make it Ebitda-positive," he said. According to Goenka, producing content at a competitive price has been Zee's strength, and the company wants to maintain the cost advantages it has built over the years. Live Events ZEE5's focus on investing more in the story than in the star cast has helped it reduce costs-unlike other major streamers who spend huge amounts of money on star-driven shows, he noted. "We will control our costs and at the same time deliver quality content to audiences," he said. ZEE5 is planning to launch 100 content titles in FY26, with a focus on language-based offerings in markets like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. In FY25, the platform launched 60 pieces of content across movies and originals. Goenka also downplayed concerns that stringent cost controls would impact revenue growth, even as the platform competes with giants like Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar. ZEE5's revenue grew by 6% in FY25 to ₹976 crore. "Controlling costs can still help you grow users and offer a great content experience because how you tell the story is more important than the face behind it," he said. While ZEE5 has a hybrid subscription and ad-led model, Goenka sees a lot of potential in the subscription model and intends to partner with telcos, broadband players and other distribution platforms to reach new audiences in tier-2 and -3 cities. The platform also aims to double down on technology to improve user experience and experiment with emerging genres like short-form vertical video.
