One dead, three injured as car crashes into stationary trailer in Panvel
Navi Mumbai: A 46-year-old woman died, and three others were injured when their car rammed into a stationary trailer on Saturday in Pushpak Nagar, Panvel. The police have booked the trailer driver and an investigation is underway.
Panvel city police said the accident occurred while Rakesh Ravindra Torskar, 25, a resident of Mumbai, was returning from Kasar Kolwan with his three family members. His Maruti Eeco rammed into a stationary trailer halted in the middle of the road.
'The force of the crash caused the Maruti Eeco to get lodged under the trailer. As a result of the impact, Rakesh's mother Reshma Ravindra Torskar, 46, died on the spot. Rakesh and two passengers — relatives Gitesh Gopal Kulaye, 46, and Rajendra Jadhav, 20, suffered serious injuries,' said the police.
Shambhu Premchand Kumar, 50, the driver of the trailer which was heading to Mumbai, has been booked under sections 289 (negligent conduct with machinery), 125 (A) and (B) (acts endangering life and personal safety of others), 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) and section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Enforcement of helmet rule nets Rs 2.28 crore in Andhra's NTR
VIJAYAWADA: In a sustained crackdown on traffic violations, the NTR district police collected Rs 2.28 crore in fines over the past five months, from January 1 to May 31, as part of a rigorous road safety drive. The intensified enforcement followed directives from Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, who urged strict implementation of the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders. Citing alarming statistics, the High Court noted that over 660 motorcyclists lost their lives in road accidents across the state in 2024. Check posts were set up at major entry points, including Prakasam Barrage, Ramavarappadu, and Kanakadurga Varadhi. Since January, police have issued nearly 90,000 challans for various violations such as riding without helmets, driving on the wrong side, and lacking valid licences. Officials said 62,128 challans issued in 2025 have already been paid, yielding Rs 2.28 crore in revenue. In comparison, of the 1.33 lakh e-challans issued last year, only 43,622 were cleared, bringing in Rs 1.88 crore. The remaining challans from 2024 remain unpaid. 'There has been a marked improvement in helmet usage,' said traffic police officials, noting the use of enhanced penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Enforcement is also being aided by CCTV surveillance and advanced cameras at key traffic signals. 'We identify violators using vehicle registration numbers and send notices. In some cases, commuters are fined on the spot,' they added.

Dalit woman alleges sexual exploitation in Lucknow
Lucknow: A Dalit woman accused a man from Hardoi of sexually exploiting her under the pretext of marriage, filming obscene videos without consent and later blackmailing her. The accused also pressured the woman to convert to Christianity, threatening to circulate the videos when she demanded marriage. According to the victim, the incident dates back four years when she met the accused, Rakesh Kumar Pandey alias Avinash Pandey, at his mobile repair shop in Sarvodaya Nagar. Their acquaintance soon turned into an affair. She alleged that about three years ago, Rakesh took her to a relative's house on the pretext of a birthday party, spiked her drink and sexually assaulted her while filming the act. Despite promising marriage, he kept delaying and eventually refused. When she insisted, he began to blackmail her with the videos and forcibly continued sexual exploitation. The woman said she severed all contact, but the harassment continued through calls from different numbers. Later, Rakesh allegedly revealed his Christian faith and demanded that the woman and her family convert. When she resisted, he sent her obscene videos and photos to friends and relatives and began demanding money and property. She also claimed to receive death threats. ACP Ghazipur (Indiranagar) Anindya Vikram Singh confirmed that a case was registered and efforts are underway to trace and detain the accused.

Minor causes fatal road accident, father booked
Ahmedabad: City traffic police on Saturday registered a case after a 15-year-old boy caused a fatal road accident while riding a scooter without a driving licence. On the night of May 19, a 47-year-old man was walking past the BRTS corridor near Jupiter Lamination Pvt Ltd, opposite Asarwa railway station. Around 9pm, he was hit by a speeding two-wheeler. The rider fled the spot. The injured man was admitted to Bapunagar General Hospital, where he died during treatment on Saturday. E-Division traffic police traced the scooter to its registered owner, who said the vehicle was gifted to a female employee. It was later found that her 15-year-old younger brother took the key from their father and was riding the scooter on the day of the accident. The boy admitted he did not hold a driving licence. During the investigation, police found that the boy's father knowingly gave permission to use the vehicle despite being aware that the child was underage and unlicensed. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act, including Section 199(A) for allowing a minor to drive. Further investigation is in progress.
