Vijayawada: Veldhurthy police of Palnadu district arrested six accused in the double murder of Javisetty Venkateswarlu (62) and Javisetty Koteshwara Rao (52), residents of Gundlapadu village.
The crime took place on the road between Bodilaveedu and Mandadi villages at 4.45 pm on May 24.
According to the complaint by Thota Anjaneyulu (38), the victims, who were siblings, were returning to Gundlapadu from Nakkagudem in Telangana's Suryapet district after attending a wedding. They were travelling on a two-wheeler when the accused in a Scorpio vehicle allegedly rammed into their bike, and then killed them by pelting stones.
The arrested have been identified as Thota Venkataramaiah (41), Javisetty Srinivasa Rao (59), Thota Guruvayya (50), Dongari Nagaraju (30), Thota Venkateswarlu (43), and Gellipogu Vikram (40). However, three others — YSRCP leader and former MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy (55), his brothers Pinnelli Venkatarama Reddy (48), and Pinnelli Venkata Reddy (49), are currently absconding.
Palnadu SP Kanchi Srinivas said, as per the preliminary investigation, the motive behind the murders was a long-standing factional rivalry in Gundlapadu village. The victims belonged to one faction led by Venkateswarlu alias Moddayya, while the accused were aligned with a rival group headed by Thota Venkataramaiah. The upcoming Panchayat elections intensified the rivalry, with Venkataramaiah allegedly aspiring to become the village sarpanch.
Police suspect political jealousy and the increasing influence of Venkateswarlu in local politics as the key reasons behind the crime.

Gurugram: There was an uneasy calm in Haryana's Nuh district on Bakra-Eid Saturday, a day after the police raided a makeshift meat shop near a mosque after a complaint by two members of Gau Raksha Dal who had received a 'tip-off', and booked a father-son duo on the suspicion that they were selling beef, banned in the BJP-ruled state. The Muslim-dominated district had witnessed communal violence in December 2023. What the complaint said Sunny, a member of Gau Raksha Dal and resident of Tauru's Ward No. 8, and his companion Monu lodged a complaint with the police on the basis of a 'tip-off' they had allegedly received. According to the complaint, the father-son duo allegedly sold beef. They would transport cow meat on their motorcycle and sell it near a hotel close to the mosque, it claimed, adding that they brought the meat to their shop Friday as well, unloaded it, and were in the process of selling, when they spotted the complainants. After this, they abandoned the meat, scales, weights, and other tools, and fled on their motorbike, the complaint said. Police went to the scene and recovered approximately 41 kilograms of suspected 'beef' packed in a plastic sack, along with a knife, scales, and other equipment. While it remains unclear whether the seized meat is indeed beef or meat of any other animal, the Gau Raksha Dal members claim they have concrete information confirming it as cow meat. The seized meat has been sent to a laboratory for testing, and further action will depend on the lab report, police said. A large crowd of locals gathered at the site, but the mob was dispersed and the situation is under control, according to police. The Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Haryana banned cow slaughter through the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015. It provides for rigorous imprisonment ranging from three years to 10 years for killing the animal. In his complaint, Sunny alleged the accused duo used to regularly supply beef to a hotel near Pataudi Chowk. Based on this, the Tauru City Police Station registered a case against Maamdeen and Nadeem under Sections 13(1), 13(3), and 17 of the act. Section 13(1) deals with the offence of cow slaughter and selling beef. It entails rigorous imprisonment not less than three years, which may extend to 10 years, and a fine not less than Rs 30,000, which may extend to Rs 1,00,000. Section 13(3) also deals with punishment for such offences. Section 17 outlines the legal procedure for taking cognisance of offences under the Act. HC directs govt to revise ASO seniority list based on appointment date
1 2 Cuttack: Orissa high court has directed the state govt to revise the seniority list of assistant section officers (ASOs)in the Odisha Secretariat Service, impacting hundreds of employees. The vacation bench's verdict settles a long-standing dispute concerning seniority among two batches of ASOs — direct recruits appointed through two separate advertisements and between promotees and direct recruits. Further, the verdict brings clarity to service-related disputes that lingered for years while providing relief to employees who were appointed earlier but placed lower in the final gradation list of ASOs published on June 11, 2020. A total of 10 writ petitions were clubbed together for hearing, categorised into two groups. The first group, comprising seven petitions, involved a dispute between two sets of direct recruits: one recruited under Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC)'s advertisement no. 06 dated May 14, 2015, for ST category candidates (140), and another (811) under advertisement no. 08 of Oct 6, 2012. The second group of three petitions involved disputes between promotees and direct recruits. The HC noted that although advertisement no. 6 was issued earlier, appointments from the list were delayed until Oct 2016 due to legal hurdles and administrative delays. In contrast, candidates under the 2015 advertisement were appointed earlier — on Jan 27 and May 18, 2016. In the judgment on June 3, the vacation bench of Justice B P Routray upheld the principle that seniority in govt service should be based on the actual date of appointment, not the date of the recruitment advertisement or recommendation — unless a rule explicitly states otherwise. Justice Routray ruled that ASOs appointed earlier in 2016 under advertisement no. 6 must be placed above those appointed later in the same year under advertisement no. 8 in the final gradation list published on June 11, 2020. Justice Routray further ruled that promotees must be treated as en-bloc seniors to the direct recruits of the same calendar year. Accordingly, Justice Routray ordered the home department to revise the ASO gradation list in line with the HC's directives, ensuring that seniority reflects the actual date of appointment.
