Modi opens Chenab bridge
This photograph taken and released by the Indian Press Information Bureau (PIB) on 6 June 2025 shows India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding national flag during the inauguration of the Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi, Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Photo AFP Listen to article Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first visit to the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Friday since a conflict with arch-rival Pakistan, opening a strategic railway line to the contested region he called "the crown jewel of India". "Pakistan will never forget... its shameful loss," the Hindu nationalist premier told crowds a month since India launched strikes on its neighbour after an attack on tourists in Kashmir. "Friends, today's event is a grand festival of India's unity and firm resolve," Modi said after striding across the soaring bridge to formally launch it for rail traffic. "This is a symbol and celebration of rising India," he said of the Chenab Bridge which connects two mountains. New Delhi calls the Chenab span the "world's highest railway arch bridge", sitting 359 metres (1,117 feet) above a river. While several road and pipeline bridges are higher, Guinness World Records confirmed that Chenab trumps the previous highest railway bridge, the Najiehe in China. The new route will facilitate the movement of people and goods, as well as troops, that was previously possible only via treacherous mountain roads and by air. Around 150 people protested against the project on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad in Azad jammu and Kashmir. "We want to tell India that building bridges and laying roads in the name of development will not make the people of Kashmir give up their demand for freedom," said Azir Ahmad Ghazali, who organised the rally attended by Kashmiris who fled unrest on the Indian side in the 1990s. "In clear and unequivocal terms, we want to say to the Indian government that the people of Kashmir have never accepted India's forced rule." Modi also announced further government financial support for families whose relatives were killed, or whose homes were damaged, during the brief conflict --- mainly in shelling along the Line of Control. "Their troubles are our troubles," Modi said.

Punjab power relief funded by profits of two power companies
LAHORE: After the reduction in electricity tariffs of two power companies - Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power Private Limited and the Punjab Thermal Power Private Limited - there will be cut in power tariff for the consumers but its impact would not be too significant, it has been learnt. 'There will be definitely reduction in power tariff of electricity consumers in Punjab and the relief will be financed with profits earned by said two government-owned power companies,' sources in the energy department said, adding: 'In light of the Punjab cabinet decision, the provincial government would approach Nepra for a reduction in power tariffs for these two plants so that these price reductions get permanence and are reflected in the new tariff.' It may be noted that the Punjab government had established a special purpose vehicle company by the name of Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power (Pvt) Limited (QATPL) in March 2015 under section 32 of the Companies Ordinance 1984 in Independent Power Producer (IPP) mode with the mandate to build, own and operate a 1180 MW RLNG based power plant at Bhikki, Shiekhupura on fast track. Punjab CM announces up to 40pc relief in power tariffs The Punjab Thermal Power (Private) Limited (PTPL) is a private limited company incorporated under the Companies Act, 2017. It is wholly owned by the government of Punjab through the energy department. The main objective of the company is to establish and operate a 1263 MW thermal power plant based on RLNG at Haveli Bahadur Shah near Trimmu Barrage, District Jhang in Punjab. It may be recalled that the provincial cabinet in its meeting had given nod to cut the power tariffs of these two plants by 30-40 per cent to reduce electricity bills. This move is similar to the federal government's which recently renegotiated contracts with independent power plants (IPPs) to reduce tariffs, the sources added. 'Both the companies had curtailed its profits as well as reduced non-developmental expenditures to materialize this move.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

New rail line links IIOJK to Indian network: Modi vows not to stop IIOJK development after attack
NEW DELHI: India is committed to efforts to develop its restive territory of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, accusing neighbour Pakistan of seeking to destroy livelihoods there with April's deadly attack on tourists. He was speaking on his first visit to the Himalayan region since attackers targeted Hindu tourists in the popular Pahalgam area, killing 26 men, triggering hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbours that ended in a ceasefire last month. 'The atmosphere of development that emerged in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir will not be hindered by the attack… I will not let development stop here,' Mr Modi said in remarks after inaugurating infrastructure projects. Key among these was a US$5 billion (S$6.4 billion) rail link between the IIOJK Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, which has been more than 40 years in the making and features the world's highest railway arch bridge. Others include highways, city roads and a new medical college. India has accused Pakistan of backing the April attack, a claim denied by Islamabad, and they engaged in four days of fierce fighting in May before agreeing to a ceasefire. Pakistan aimed to disrupt the livelihoods of the poor in IIOJK, who rely heavily on tourism, Mr Modi said, adding that he would face down any obstacle to regional development. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry rejected Mr Modi's remarks on June 6 and said it remained steadfast in its 'principled support' for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. 'Claims of development… ring hollow against the backdrop of an unprecedented military presence, suppression of fundamental freedoms, arbitrary arrests, and a concerted effort to alter the region's demography in violation of international law,' it said. In May, Islamabad said a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute was essential to ensure lasting peace in the region, known for its snow-capped mountains, scenic lakes, lush meadows and tulip gardens. The region, which drew more than 3 million visitors in 2024, is at the heart of the hostility between the old foes, both of which claim it in full, but rule it in part and have fought two of their three wars over it. India also accuses Pakistan of supporting Islamist militants battling security forces in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, but Islamabad denies the accusation. Trains run in the IIOJK Kashmir Valley but the new link is its first to the wider Indian railway network. Apart from boosting the regional economy, it is expected to help revive tourism, which plummeted after the April attack.
