'State-of-the-art' football hub plans submitted

Yahoo17-04-2025

Plans for a multimillion-pound "state-of-the-art" football training centre in South Yorkshire have been submitted.
According to the application, the Doncaster City Elite Training Centre in Bawtry would provide training facilities and accommodation for professional football teams.
The man behind the proposals, former football agent Willie McKay, said the £55m centre would host elite sides and be "the only one of its kind in Britain", while local teams and groups could also use the facilities at quieter times.
However, concerns have been expressed over developing on green belt land and the training centre's proximity to existing homes.
If approved, the site on land near Martin Grange Farm would consist of five full-size pitches, including a show pitch with a 499-capacity stand.
It would also feature an indoor pitch and goalkeeper training areas, as well as indoor facilities - including padel courts - and accommodation for up to three teams at any one time.
In his application, Mr McKay said the "unique" facility would be fit to host the biggest clubs in the world playing in the north of England or on a training camp.
According to a planning document, the site would be split into an "elite training hub" with five-star facilities and a "professional hub" for other teams.
The plans have been endorsed by several professional football clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and the MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, Lee Pitcher, who described them as a "fantastic opportunity for our constituency".
Mr McKay said he would be "disappointed" if the proposals were not approved, and claimed £1m had already been spent on them.
However, numerous objections to the plans have also been submitted to the council.
Urban Design, a department at Doncaster Council which advises on planning applications, said the "density" of the development "raises significant concern".
"There is concern relating to how this development will sit within the wider landscape," its submission added.
Concerns were also raised about an increase in traffic in the area.
Mr McKay said the land, previously used as a farm and an equestrian holding, was "green belt in name only".
"There's only so many things you can change green belt land for - a sports facility is one of them," he said.
Meanwhile, Charles Dunn, a planning consultant advising Mr McKay, said the application would demonstrate the "very special circumstances" needed for planning approval on green belt land.
Mr Dunn said that was "a combination of the economic benefit and, really, the uniqueness of what's proposed", as well as some of the facilities being available for community use.
Any impact on neighbouring properties would be "minimal", he added.
Mr Dunn said he did not know when the council would make a decision on the plans.

Man United submit fresh £60m transfer bid for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United have submitted a fresh bid to Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. The 25-year-old Cameroon international is set to leave west London after an outstanding season in which he scored 20 goals. United had an initial bid of £55m rejected two weeks ago, and have returned with an improved package worth more than £60m including add-ons. Advertisement Mbeumo is also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur after they hired his former manager, Thomas Frank, from Brentford, though Spurs are yet to make a formal approach. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with Mbeumo set to triple his salary from his current £45,000-per-week contract at Brentford. Mbeumo was asked about transfer speculation while attending the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this month, telling Sky Sports: 'It is a bit new for me, I would say! I think it can be the life of a footballer and you need to accept it. 'It's been my best season so far in the Premier League. And even collectively, I think we did play very good games. I think we've been unlucky to chase the Europe spot, but I think it's been a fantastic season.' Advertisement United believe they have the edge over Spurs in the race to lure Mbeumo. But Spurs now have Frank in their corner – as well as Champions League football after beating United in the Europa League final – and Mbeumo lauded his former manager's talents. 'He's done so much for me, he literally trusted me from the start. I think he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player as well. So I can only wish him all the best, and I'm sure he's going to do well. 'I think he knows everything. He's really smart. He knows where he wants to bring the team, how he wants to play. I think he's been fantastic for Brentford. I think he's going to [need] some time to adapt, obviously: [Champions League] games, more expectations, but I'm sure he's going to do well. 'He knows how to talk to people. He knows how to build a group. And that's why we've been playing so well.'

Tottenham Hotspur consider move for Man United target Eberechi Eze

Tottenham Hotspur are 'weighing up a move' for long-term Manchester United target Eberechi Eze, according to a report. Eze, 26, enjoyed a brilliant campaign for Crystal Palace last year as he helped propel them to an FA Cup triumph and Europa League football next season. Advertisement The England international scored a brilliant goal in the final to secure the 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley. In total, he returned 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for the Eagles. United have been linked with a move for Eze on multiple occasions in recent years but the Reds' interest appeared to ramp up following Ruben Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford in November. The former Sporting CP manager's 3-4-2-1 system relies heavily on two attacking midfielders to act as the creative heartbeat of his side. Under the 4-2-3-1 set-up favoured by Amorim's predecessor, Erik ten Hag, Eze would have been in direct competition with talismanic captain Bruno Fernandes for his favoured number ten role. Advertisement But Amorim's system would have placed Eze in one of the two options for the position, enabling him to thrive at the heart of United's team in the exact manner he has at Selhurst Park. A report in May revealed United were considering the 26-year-old as a target this summer However, the Red Devils have prioritised moves for two alternative Premier League attackers – Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) – over Eze with a deal agreed for the former and one set to be struck for the latter. Eze's release clause with Palace – worth around £68 million – would prove too prohibitive to target in addition to Cunha and Mbeumo as both players will cost United similar amounts. But this could enable Spurs to steal a march on their North West rival with the Lilywhites considering targeting Eze as a 'statement signing' for new manager Thomas Frank, according to The Guardian. Advertisement The North London cub had expressed interest in reuniting Frank with Mbeumo after their successful time at Brentford together. But the Cameroonian winger only has eyes for Old Trafford with United having launched a second bid yesterday after their opening proposal was rejected by the Bees. Eze appears a better fit for Spurs, however, while Mbeumo is tailor made for the right-hand side of Amorim's system in a variety of different roles, meaning this could simply be a happy coincidence for the two clubs as they end up the right options for their respective sides. Bayer Leverkusen monitoring Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche

Bayern Leverkusen have held talks regarding the signing of AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche this summer (h/t Florian Plettenberg). The Ligue 1 giants are open to selling the French talent for a suitable offer amid growing interest in the player. Advertisement With a contract running until June 2028, Monaco value Akliouche at around €60 million. Leverkusen have identified Akliouche as their dream target to bolster the attack, but the deal is still in its infancy. Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona have also been credited as the suitors for the 23-year-old. A standout youth product of Monaco, Akliouche has grown by leaps and bounds as one of the top young talents in the French top flight. He had a productive 2024/25 campaign, registering seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions. Akliouche also bagged a silver medal with France in the Paris Olympics last year. Advertisement The French-Algerian youngster ranks among the prominent wingers in Europe, excelling in ball progression, dribbling and playmaking. Leverkusen are looking to strengthen their squad with quality signings on all fronts, as they aim to compete for more trophies under new manager Erik ten Hag. They will have significant spending power, having sold Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool for around €170 million. Leverkusen can be a great destination for Akliouche to reach new heights in his career. He would bring more dynamism to their attack. Die Werkself have identified PSV Eindhoven attacking midfielder Malik Tillman as a potential replacement for Wirtz. The German giants have secured a deal worth £35m for the signing of Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah.
