BSNL building AI system to identify and correct defects in services: CMD

The Hindu14 hours ago

The BSNL is building an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based system to automatically identify a problem and correct by itself in the system. Crack teams have already been deployed at each telecom circle to check for quality issues and address customers grievances.
'We have put in indigenous technology and it takes time to stabilise. There are small issues about voice quality. We are confident of being able to come up with real good quality of network. We want our loyal customers to be patient a bit more,' said chairman and managing director A. Robert J. Ravi on Wednesday.
In an exclusive interaction during the soft launch of three high speed internet services here, the CMD said that multinational companies took years to stabilise but insisted that the BSNL 4G speeds are much better than that of its competitors though it will take some time to complete the 'tuning' of the network to make it more secure for the customer.
'But once the network is tuned well, we would have developed a product that is most secure for the customer, because everything is completely under control. We want to ensure every customer is totally satisfied,' he said.
'We have 90,000 4G connections and will cross one lakh by July. We are also meeting the telecom regular parameters as we report every month. We are sure that in three months, we will be able to provide world class quality mobile and data services,' said Mr. Ravi.
Apart from installing one lakh more mobile towers across the country, the public sector telecom giant has been looking at other alternatives. 'We will soon announce our new technology breakthroughs developed indigenously where quality services can be offered without tower installation. We are also looking at offering services without a SIM card and the need to change SIM cards,' he said.
For now, 5G FWA will be the focus area for the next few months. 'Our maiden launch of 5G mobile services will be in Delhi in September. We are also planning something unique for 5G mobile customers,' said the CMD. Monetisation of assets has been proceeding well, doubling the previous year's performance, he added and exuded confidence about achieving targets with government support.

Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Lokesh meets Tony Blair, seeks support in implementing education reforms

Minister for IT and Electronics and Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh has met former British Prime Minister and founder of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), Tony Blair, in New Delhi on Thursday (June 19, 2025). This is their second meeting in just about a year, the first being in July last year in Mumbai, when Mr. Blair expressed his willingness to help the Andhra Pradesh (AP) government in adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies in the education sector and public service delivery through the TBI, for which the two sides had signed an agreement in December 2024. As per the agreement, the TBI has sent a team that is enabling the Andhra Pradesh Government to implement a slew of reforms in higher education, and helping it in the establishment of a Global Institute for Good Governance (GiGG). Mr. Blair and Mr. Lokesh took stock of the progress made by the A.P. Government on those fronts, and discussed collaboration in areas like skill development and skill census among others issues. Blair urged to join advisory board of GiGG On the occasion, Mr. Lokesh invited Mr. Blair to join the advisory board of GiGG. Besides, an agreement has been signed between the A.P. Government and TBI for cooperation in skill training and the establishment of GiGG. Mr. Blair said the TBI is going to take part in the upcoming Conclave of State Education Ministers to be held in Visakhapatnam in August. The Andhra Pradesh Government Secretary (School Education, Skills Development & Training) Kona Sasidhar and representatives of the TBI were present.

BSNL 5G is now Quantum 5G, but when will BSNL launch its 5G service in India?

When will BSNL launch its 5G services? While the state-run telco has been actively conducting 5G trial runs in various Indian cities, there is no word on when BSNL 5G will be rolled out to the public. Online reports mentioned a June 2025 window, but as we fast approach July, it is becoming more and more clear that it will take some more time. However, some new developments suggest the launch of BSNL 5G is imminent, meaning it might happen any day fact, the government wants you to know, it has already launched the service, and it has in some way, but not entirely. There are two big takeaways. The government has announced that BSNL 5G services will be launched under a new banner. It is called Q-5G, where Q is short for 'quantum.' So, the first big takeaway is that BSNL 5G is officially called Quantum 5G now. The name is crowdsourced, meaning that it was picked by people at large – not by BSNL.'Because of you, we now have a name that reflects the power, speed, and future of BSNL's 5G network,' the telco posted on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. 'Together, we've not just launched a service - we've made history.' The government touts BSNL 5G or BSNL Q-5G as a next-generation telecom network/service built indigenously from ground-up. It is being built in consultation with a consortium led by TCS and backed by others like Tejas Network, C-Dot, and ITI. No foreign player is apparently involved in the development. BSNL has been allocated the necessary spectrum in premium 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz bands and the telco has confirmed that it will use its existing and upcoming 4G towers for the rollout since they are 5G-ready. Given that it plans to set up 100,000 such towers pan-India (of which more than 50 percent are already up and running), one can expect BSNL to cover a lot of ground once its 5G services become fully now, the telco has 'soft-launched' an FWA or fixed wireless access service for enterprise customers in select circles and cities, including Hyderabad. The Quantum 5G FWA service will offer high-speed connectivity without requiring a SIM card. BSNL 5G trials are running in Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Kolkata, Patna, Hyderabad and Chennai. With recent developments like Q-5G branding and Q-5G FWA launch, it is all but clear that BSNL is in an advanced stage and wide-scale consumer 5G roll out is almost here.

AI to improve efficiency in Karnataka's power sector

BENGALURU: The energy department is looking at utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring in professionalism in operations and management of electricity distribution to improve Karnataka's power sector. Energy Minister KJ George told the media on Wednesday that the department will use AI in future, but asserted there will be no job cuts. AI will help only to a certain extent, he said. Officials said AI will help in better skill management, and to control financial and power losses. AI is already being used to monitor power supply to make generation projections for the future. George said the Central government had in-principle agreed to give two years time to implement the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to give smart meters to all consumers at low rates. At present, the scheme ends in December 2025. He said if this is done, smart meters will be distributed to all consumers at nominal rates, like in other states. Implementation of smart meters was discussed with Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal Khattar recently, he added. The plan to levy 2 per cent cess on government departments that have to clear pending dues of around Rs 10,000 crore was okayed. The list of defaulting agencies include the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Urban Development departments, and BWSSB. George said smart meters cannot be given to consumers at nominal rates, unless all dues of energy supply companies (Escoms) are cleared. This is one of the conditions of the Central government. He said a proposal will be placed before the cabinet to include 40,000 farmers into the Kusum-C bracket, pending clearance for implementation of the Kusum-B scheme. This has been discussed with the chief minister and an additional Rs 10,000 crore will be needed. Energy department officials said transmission and distribution losses are being reduced from the existing 2.9 per cent and 9 per cent to 2.2 per cent. KPCL Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said three 765kV sub-stations are being set up in Central, North and South Karnataka, and 37 sub-stations of 400kV capacity each are being set up across Karnataka. All installations will be completed in four years. High performance conductors are being set up across existing electricity corridors to strengthen carrying capacity and reduce distribution losses.
