5,000 cyclists take part in Highland event for Cancer Research

STV News11-05-2025

Thousands of cyclists from across the UK pedalled across the Highlands to raise money for Cancer Research.
On Sunday, around 5,000 cyclists took part in Cancer Research UK's Etape Caledonia feat, which started in Pitlochry.
The event branched off into 40, 55, and 85-mile routes, meaning riders of varying degrees of experience could take part. PA Media Gold medal holder and Olympian Hailey Duff MBE (front centre) skipped to the start line of Cancer Research UK Etape Caledonia to lead the pack of around 5,000 cyclists (Alan Richardson/PA)
Organised by Motiv Sports UK, the fundraiser attracted cyclists from all backgrounds and the closed-road event meant participants could cycle without fear of traffic or disruption.
Each route offered views of the Highlands' lochs, forests and hilly backdrop.
Gold medal Olympian Hailey Duff MBE officially started the event at 6.30am, leading the throng of cyclists off on the course.
She powered over the finish line as the first female just two hours, 30 minutes and 54 seconds later, smashing her target time of 3.5 hours.
Dentist Alanna Cameron from Inverness took the top time, setting a new course record for the 40-mile route of two hours, 19 minutes and 16 seconds, knocking a slim five seconds off the previous record set by Louisa Brown.
Female riders led the pack this year on performance with a second impressive course record set for the 55-mile route by Sharon McNicol from Troon who came in at three hours, one minute and five seconds on the 55-mile route, smashing almost 26 minutes off the previous route record held by Kate Woodward.
Among the standout participants was Nathan Grove, a Scottish RAF engineer and bowel cancer survivor, riding the 55-mile route to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK and finishing in three hours, 47 minutes and 24 seconds.
Originally from Tain in the Scottish Highlands and now living in Letham, Angus, he has raised nearly £13,000 for the charity across several endurance events.
Event director Jo Dytch, who has been involved with the event since its launch in 2007, said: 'Cancer Research UK Etape Caledonia is more than a cycling event, it's a celebration of strength, solidarity and community. Stories like Nathan's remind us why this event matters.
'Taking part in a sportive of this scale, in stunning surroundings and peaceful closed roads is a tremendous experience, and all the more meaningful if cyclists have been riding to raise money to help transform lives through funding cancer research.
'Thank you to the community of Highland Perthshire who came out in their droves to support the cyclists and offer a warm Scottish welcome.
'Congratulations to everyone who took part today. We're already looking forward to our landmark 20th edition in 2026!'

Nils Koppen in shock Rangers departure just days after 49ers takeover

The Belgian's exit will be confirmed on Monday and comes just six months after he was promoted to Technical Director Nils Koppen is set to become the first high-profile departure from Ibrox as Andrew Cavenagh kicks off his Rangers overhaul. Record Sport understands the Light Blues' recruitment chief is stepping down from his role as Technical Director as Gers' new American regime begin work restructuring the club's backroom operation. ‌ The Belgian's exit will be confirmed on Monday - just hours after Kevin Thelwell officially takes up his new post as sporting director at Ibrox. ‌ Former PSV Eindhoven head scout Koppen joined Gers in January last year after being hired to lead the club's hunt for new signings. He was instrumental in the moves that brought in last summer's big arrivals Jefte, Hamza Igamane, Robin Propper, Nedim Bajrami and Vaclav Cerny. But those additions failed to change Rangers' on-field fortunes as they finished a huge 17 points behind Double-winning Celtic. ‌ His promotion to a wider role as Technical Director last November raised eyebrows amongst supporters given the struggles of the players he had helped recruit. Now just six months later he is heading for the Ibrox exit. ‌ Record Sport revealed last week that during his interview for the Gers manager's job, caretaker gaffer Barry Ferguson recommended to the board that Koppen be replaced. Now it will be left to former Everton director of football Thelwell to lead the reshaping of the Gers squad. He has already taken part in talks with some of the candidates hoping to replace Philippe Clement as the team's new permanent manager but will step up his involvement having official moved into his office. ‌ Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers completed their £75million Ibrox takeover on Friday and have pledged to make another £20million available to upgrade the squad. It remains to be seen who will be the manager entrusted to spend those huge sums. Davide Anecelotti remains the favourite to land the gig, with Russell Martin, Francesco Farioli and Brian Priske also in the running. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Jamie Carragher drops Celtic Champions League claim that gets Thierry Henry saying 'don't make statements'

PSG started last night in unwelcome company but shattered through the barrier with a 5-0 win over Inter Jamie Carragher predicted there will never be another Champions League winner from smaller nations like Scotland – before Thierry Henry warned him not to make 'statements' that could come back to bite him. PSG annihilated Inter 5-0 to win the trophy last night and, incredibly, it was only the second time a team from France had won the Champions League or European Cup. ‌ Marseille's victory in 1993 had stood alone as the only French success in the competition leaving them trailing well behind the rest of the Big Five nations – with Spain, England, Italy and Germany boasting 55 between them. ‌ Prior to PSG's win they were in unwelcome company as one of four nations with only one to their name. Celtic, famously, are the only Scottish team to win the big one, the famous Lisbon Lions win in 1967 the proudest moment in their history and one that is unlikely to be repeated. Outside of that only Red Star Belgrade from the former Yugoslavia and Steaua Bucharest of Romania can boast bringing home their country's sole European Cup. ‌ The pre-match discussion centred around whether PSG would be able to break France out of that bracked, and Carragher, speaking on CBS Sports, said: 'The big thing when you look at that stats table, France are alongside Scotland, the former Yugoslavia, and Romania. Those three countries, I am quite confident, will never win a Champions League again.' That's when Arsenal legend Henry cut in: "Don't make statements!" But Carragher clarified: 'No, I just don't see that. France produces some of the best footballers in the world. Probably one of the most dominant nations in the world. It's unacceptable that they only have one Champions League winner.' ‌ PSG did in the end win a second Champions League for France, and in some style. Desire Doue was the star of the show with two goals and an assist as Inter struggled to even lay a glove on the dominant French champions, who will be hoping to rack up the European honours in the years ahead and fire France up the medal table.
