Nintendo says sold record 3. 5m Switch 2 consoles in first four days

Nintendo said Wednesday it had sold a record 3.5 million Switch 2 units worldwide in the first four days after the console was launched.
"This is the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days," the Japanese video game giant said in a statement.
Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the Switch 2 is an upgrade to Nintendo's blockbuster Switch console.
It was released last Thursday to a global swell of fan excitement that included sold-out pre-orders and midnight store openings.
Since its 2017 launch, the original Switch -- which enjoyed a popularity boost during the pandemic with hit games such as "Animal Crossing" -- has sold 152 million units.
That makes it the third best-selling console of all time.
Analysts predicted last week that Nintendo could score record early sales with the Switch 2 -- but it remains to be seen if it can match the performance of its predecessor.
Challenges for Nintendo include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether it can convince enough people to pay the high price for its new device.

The Switch 2 costs $449.99 in the United States, compared to a launch price of $299.99 for the original Switch.
Both are hybrid consoles which can connect to a TV or be played on the go.
New games such as "Donkey Kong Bananza" and "Mario Kart World" -- which allow players to go exploring off-grid -- are also more expensive than existing Switch titles.
Nintendo forecasts it will sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original in the same period after its release.
The Switch 2 "is priced relatively high" compared to its predecessor, so it "will not be easy" to keep initial momentum going, the company's president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May.
The Switch 2 has eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse.
New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw for young audiences used to watching game streamers.
Success is crucial for Nintendo: while the "Super Mario" maker is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90% of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say.

The court application comes hot on the heels of the DA's demand for Tau to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition to clarify how he selected Sizekhaya Holdings and how he struck a deal with Ithuba Holdings, the current operator of the National Lottery. The DA has written to the Chairperson of the portfolio committee, Mzwandile Masina, demanding that Tau and the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) chairperson, Barney Pityana, appear before the committee to account for the opaque manner in which Sizekhaya Holdings was appointed as the new licence holder. "We are concerned about the lack of transparency in the appointment process," said Toby Chance, DA spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition. The company, founded by Vladimir Vukovic, is questioning whether Sizekhaya could lawfully be awarded the licence, given its alleged non-compliance with some of the conditions bidders had to adhere to. Vukovic said in his affidavit that his company had teamed up with local partners to bid for the licence but was not informed of the reasons for the decision. "As a result, Lekalinga does not know the basis on which the licence was awarded to Sizekhaya or why the other bids were unsuccessful," he said. Vukovic raised concerns regarding Sizekhaya's alleged links to the JSE-listed gaming group Goldrush and the potential for indirect financial interests held by prohibited persons. "The record should reveal the extent to which the minister assessed whether any political party or political office-bearer holds a direct or indirect financial interest in Sizekhaya and ensured compliance with the applicable prohibitions," he said. Vukovic also questioned Sizekhaya's ability to take over the lottery within the stipulated five-month timeframe. "This timeline is significant. It points to the ability to mobilise resources, infrastructure, and operational capacity within that timeframe," he said. Tau's spokesperson, Yamkela Fanisi, said Tau respected the decision made by Vukovic. "The minister respects the decision by those who were not successful bidders... He believes the process was credible and followed due process. At a time when the portfolio committee calls us to account, we will do so," Fanisi said. Meanwhile, Tau has applied for leave to appeal against a recent court ruling that set aside his decision to grant a 12-month temporary licence to Ithuba Holdings. The appeal, lodged with the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, effectively allows Ithuba to continue running the lottery until the appeal outcome is reached. Ithuba has agreed to continue operating the National Lottery, ensuring that all games, draws, and prize payouts will proceed normally. The company has reassured the public that it will maintain their commitment to integrity, transparency, and the benefit of South Africans. While Ithuba's continued operation provides short-term relief, the long-term future of the National Lottery remains uncertain. Sizekhaya Holdings is set to take over the lottery in June 2026, but questions remain about the transparency of the licensing process and the impact of further legal challenges, and how Tau struck a deal with Ithuba to hold the fort while Sizekhaya is obtaining its licence.

The airline issued the clarification following a wave of public queries about Mango's status. SAA emphasised that Mango's business rescue process is entirely separate from the one SAA exited in April 2021. "Mango Airlines (SOC) Limited remains a subsidiary of SAA that was placed in business rescue in August 2021. Mango's business rescue process is totally separate from the business rescue process that South African Airways (SOC) Limited came out of in April 2021," the airline said. "SAA has no authority or direct oversight over Mango's financial obligations, and current and future business plan," it added in a statement to the media. The update comes after Mango's Business Rescue Practitioner, Sipho Sono, confirmed that the airline is nearing the final stages of negotiating a sale and purchase agreement with a potential investor. SIU investigates R3. 1 billion in Housing Development Agency deals

Image: Sandi Kwon Hoo / Independent Newspapers The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is probing dodgy transactions valued at about R3.1 billion approved by the state-owned Housing Development Agency (HDA) and eight provincial Human Settlements departments since 2016. Several of the HDA's deals now under scrutiny were for the identification, acquisition, holding, development, and release of state, communal, and privately owned land for residential and community purposes by the agency, in its name, or for and on behalf of the provincial departments or by the departments. The provincial Human Settlements departments involved are from the Eastern and Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, and the Northern Cape. According to details of the property sales being probed, the highest amount paid was the R389.1 million spent in Chris Hani in Ekurhuleni for 2,560 serviced residential stands in 2021/22, R279m for land in the City of Tshwane in the 2020/21 financial year, while R213m was paid in the Eagles Nest township transaction also in Ekurhuleni in 2019/20. Strangely, the three valuations of the land eventually bought for R120,000 ranged between R285,000 and R13.2m. The SIU is investigating any alleged serious maladministration in connection with the agency's affairs and the departments' improper or unlawful conduct by their employees, unlawful expenditure of public money, as well as offences committed in violation of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. The offences include unlawful or improper conduct by any person, which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public between April 2016 and this year. The corruption-busting unit will also determine whether there was any irregular, improper, or unlawful conduct by applicable service providers of the agency and departments, or any other person or entity. In addition, the SIU will investigate whether the manner these contracts were entered into was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable, or cost-effective and contrary to applicable legislation, manuals, guidelines, practice notes, circulars, or instructions issued by the National Treasury or the relevant provincial Treasury. It will also check if manuals, policies, procedures, prescripts, instructions or practices of, or applicable to the agency and departments and the related unauthorised, irregular or fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred or losses suffered by the agency, departments or the State.
