ALBAWABA - Jordan authorities have arrested Ahmed al-Zarqan, a senior Muslim Brotherhood leader, days after officially banning the group and intensifying its crackdown on its activities and assets.

A member of the Executive Bureau and the second deputy to the General Supervisor of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Kingdom, Ahmed al-Zarqan was detained by Jordanian authorities, according to sources who spoke to Al Jazeera Net. In addition to being responsible for the organization's financial issues, he was also a member of the Executive Bureau.
The Jordanian authorities have prohibited the operations of the organization and labeled it as a "illegal association." Al-Zarqan, who is 72 years old, is the most senior leader to be detained since the ban was implemented.
The arrest of Aref Hamdan, a former member of the Executive Bureau and a member of the Shura Council of the organization, occurred a few days prior to his own arrest. Hamdan was taken into custody when he was at his place of employment in Amman. A transfer was made to the General Intelligence Prison, which is located in the Jandaweel region.
There is a widespread belief among observers that Hamdan's detention is connected to the current investigation into the financial affairs of the Muslim Brotherhood. This investigation is being conducted as part of a security effort to seek for papers and evidence that might implicate the organization.
These arrests occurred at the same time as the recent decision made by the Jordanian government, in which Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya formally prohibited the Muslim Brotherhood from performing any activities.
It was ruled unlawful by Al-Faraya to be a member of the group or to promote its beliefs. Additionally, it was confirmed that all of the group's headquarters and offices would be shut down, regardless of whether or not they were in collaboration with other organizations.
In addition, the government swiftly seized both the movable and immovable assets of the group in order to comply with the applicable legal orders. The authorities highlighted that any interaction with the organization that takes place via the media or social media platforms is legitimate in nature and subject to responsibility.

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation / Jordan Valley Authority announced on Monday that its ongoing campaigns to remove violations and tighten control over the King Abdullah Canal — one of the kingdom's vital sources of drinking and irrigation water — have yielded significant results. According to information received by the Control Center of the Jordan Valley Authority, a total of 873 violations have been detected since the start of the year. These included illegal siphoning of large quantities of water for farm irrigation and filling agricultural pools. The authorities also confiscated several water pumps. Additionally, 32 encroachments were discovered on state-owned land in the northern and southern Jordan Valley through 22 security campaigns and daily inspection tours. In the southern sections of the canal alone, 214 violations were detected in May and 112 in June. The authority reported that the efficiency of the canal was raised from 82% to 87% by removing illegal water lines and restoring the original conditions. Seven legal cases have been referred to court for further legal action, and violators have been summoned. The Jordan Valley Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the intense inspection campaigns across the Jordan Valley, emphasizing the importance of protecting water resources and enforcing the law. These measures have led to the recovery of hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of water that would have otherwise been illegally extracted. The Ministry and the Jordan Valley Authority also commended the support of official, local, and civil entities, particularly the Jordanian judiciary, including public prosecutors and judicial bodies, for their role in ensuring legal accountability and deterring future violations.
