Convoy to Gaza departs Tunisia in bid to break blockade

A humanitarian convoy aimed at breaking the blockade on Gaza has begun its journey from several Tunisian cities, organisers say.
The initiative, launched on Monday, is expected to travel across Libya and Egypt before reaching the Rafah border crossing into the Gaza Strip.
Organised by the Joint Coordination for Palestine, the convoy includes representatives from civil society groups, trade unions, political parties, medical associations, and youth organisations. Its route will take it from Tunis, Sousse, Sfax and Gabès to the southern city of Ben Gardane, near the Libyan border.
The convoy will then proceed along the Libyan coastline before heading to Cairo and onwards to Rafah on the Egyptian-Palestinian border.
Organisers say the mission is intended to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and to deliver humanitarian aid.
The effort has received backing from major Tunisian institutions, including the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the National Union of Tunisian Journalists, the Tunisian Bar Association, the Tunisian Human Rights League, the Doctors' Union, and the Young Doctors' Organisation.
Initially scheduled to depart on 14 June, the launch was moved forward to 9 June to align with the arrival of international delegations in the region.
Separately, a coalition of more than 32 international unions and rights organisations recently announced a 'Global March to Gaza' to highlight what it called the dire humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians. The marchers plan to enter Gaza on foot.

MP Nassia calls for inclusive dialogue after meeting UN deputy head

Following a meeting with Stephanie Koury, Deputy Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Deputy Abdel Salam Nassia outlined a new initiative aimed at resolving Libya's ongoing political and security crisis. Nassia said the proposal focuses on unifying Libya's executive authority and implementing meaningful security arrangements within the capital. The initiative also calls for a serious, inclusive dialogue between Libyan factions to address contentious issues and pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections. 'I urged Koury to present this initiative to all Libyan parties to enrich it before moving towards implementation,' Nassia said. However, he expressed disappointment with recent decisions that, while framed as security measures to stabilise the country, he believes merely manage the crisis rather than resolve it. 'These measures continue to fuel instability at the expense of the Libyan people and stray far from a genuine state-building agenda,' he added. News Tagged: libyan crisis MP Abdel Salam Nassia

Tripoli security bolstered after Monday morning tensions

Libyan authorities have reinforced security patrols across sensitive areas in Tripoli following brief unrest in the early hours of Monday. The Law Enforcement Department of the General Directorate for Security Operations said it had increased its presence in 'frontline areas' of the capital. The move comes in line with existing ceasefire arrangements and aims to safeguard citizens and property. Earlier, the Ministry of Defence under the Government of National Unity confirmed that the situation in Tripoli had stabilised after what it described as 'unexpected movements' by armed elements. The ministry said the developments represented a 'clear breach' of established de-escalation agreements. A statement released by the ministry said immediate action was taken to contain the movements, with violating groups retreating to their previous positions without any escalation. Aguila and Hamad praise 'Belgasem Haftar's achievements'

Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Aguila Saleh and the head of the parallel government Osama Hamad have praised the efforts of Belgasem Haftar, head of the Reconstruction and Development Fund, during a recent meeting. They highlighted the Fund's contributions to Libya's reconstruction efforts, describing its achievements as unprecedented. According to them, the Fund has played a significant role in creating job opportunities and driving a major urban development surge across numerous Libyan cities and regions. Earlier this month, the HoR approved a 69 billion Libyan dinar budget to expand the Fund's projects. This move comes despite warnings from the Central Bank of Libya about the country's ongoing financial crisis. News Tagged: Belgasem Haftar Aqilah Saleh
