PARTLY FACETIOUS: Field Marshal Asim Munir got to meet US President

'How would you define victim?'
'That depends.'
'Really? How come?'
'Well, you could be a victim of domestic abuse that some may term as the abuser's rights.'
'Careful.'
'No, I meant a parent could slap a child to discipline him…'
'Well yes I understand that in the West hitting a child is defined as abuse, but what if the child was say hitting another child or…'
'Nuances, my friend, nuances, but if you are in politics victimhood can win elections.'
'So the best way is not to make a victim out of an opponent?'
'Nah that's not a lesson that our politicians have learned. Given the seesaw that our politics…'
'Seesaw?'
'In on one day, and out the other.'
'You need to qualify that statement. Did you mean in government one day out the other, or did you mean in jail one day and out the other, or did you mean…'
'Dear Lord. Anyway, Field Marshal Asim Munir got to meet the President of the United States, the first time ever and…'
'Didn't our first Field Marshal Ayub Khan also meet with the then US President?'
'Why are you being so flippant. Ayub Khan met the President when he had proclaimed himself as the head of government and state and the army and…'
'Gotcha, but the social media, not ours but Western social media, is full of chatter about Pakistan sending off missiles to Iran and that we have threatened Israel that if it nukes Iran we will nuke Israel.'
'I thought the Deputy Prime Minister refuted these…'
'But anyway going back to defining the word victim, the Israeli Prime Minister takes the cake: he continues to starve the people of Gaza and when they come to the few food depots he has allowed to be opened he fires on them, on average 50 plus a day are dying, and he attacked Iran and guess what? Israel is the victim in all this.'
'Netanyahu's narrative or definition of victimhood is supported by the US led Western hemisphere'.
'But the majority of the people of the US led Western hemisphere, the people they purport to represent, are no longer supporting this narrative.'
'Change in policy will take a bit more time I reckon but change it will and with it so will the definition of victimhood.'

Geneva talks yield little progress as European FMs push for renewed Iran-US dialogue

EU, UK, France, Germany test Iran's will to negotiate despite little hope of Israel halting attacks, diplomats say. PHOTO: FREEPIK Listen to article European foreign ministers urged Iran on Friday to engage with the United States over its nuclear programme after high-level talks in Geneva aimed at opening negotiations for a new nuclear deal ended with little sign of progress. The talks between the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain, France and the EU with their Iranian counterpart sought to test Tehran's readiness to negotiate despite there being scant prospect of Israel ceasing its attacks soon, diplomats said. "The Iranian Foreign Minister has expressed his willingness to continue discussions on the nuclear program and more broadly on all issues, and we expect Iran to commit to the discussion, including with the United States, to reach a negotiated settlement," said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. Britain's foreign minister David Lammy said the European countries were eager to continue talks with Iran. "This is a perilous moment, and it is hugely important that we don't see regional escalation of this conflict," he said. Tehran, under mounting pressure to agree tough curbs on its nuclear programme to prevent the potential development of an atomic weapon, has repeatedly said it will not talk to the Trump administration until Israeli attacks end. European ministers spoke ahead of their Geneva meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who signalled that Washington was open to direct talks even as it considers joining Israeli strikes intended to smash Tehran's nuclear capacity, diplomatic sources said. Washington did not confirm that, though broadcaster CNN quoted a US official saying President Donald Trump supported diplomacy by allies that could bring Iran closer to a deal.

Pakistan seeks 'unconditional condemnation' of Israel at UNSC over Iran attacks

Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad speaks during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the Israel-Iran conflict at the UN headquarters in New York on June 20, 2025. Photo: AFP Listen to article Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, on Friday condemned Israeli airstrikes on Iran during an emergency session of the UN Security Council, calling them a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law. Addressing a session on the war, he urged members to issue a categorical rejection and an unconditional and unequivocal condemnation of the attacks and to take meaningful action to halt the aggression. He praised Secretary-General António Guterres's earlier appeal for a ceasefire, declaring Pakistan's full support for diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. Also Read: UN chief urges parties to 'give peace a chance' on Iran-Israel war Denouncing the 'unjustified and illegal' strikes on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities, he stressed that they not only breached International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards but also defied the Geneva Conventions and other global treaties. Pakistan called on the IAEA to publicly clarify its legal position and to submit a full report to the Security Council. Touching upon the humanitarian fallout, he expressed deep concern over the loss of civilian lives and widespread devastation, warning that such actions posed serious risks to regional and global stability. The attacks against nuclear facilities for peaceful purposes are deeply troubling. Such attacks contravene international law, the charter of the UN, Statute of the IAEA and relevant IAEA General Conference resolutions on the issue. "The latest crisis has aggravated the existing tensions in the region arising from Israel's continuing ruthless assault on Gaza, that has resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe for the innocent Palestinians, as well as its recurring violations of international law in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. The Security Council bears primary responsibility to immediately stop this wanton aggression and hold the aggressor accountable for its actions", he added. This is a pivotal moment. The Security Council must fulfil its responsibility and facilitate peaceful resolution of disputes. Military means and coercion cannot bring about a lasting settlement. Dialogue and diplomacy in full adherence to the principles of international law and… — Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN (@PakistanUN_NY) June 20, 2025 Ahmad urged the Security Council to take immediate steps, condemn Israel's attacks on Iran, secure an immediate ceasefire, protect nuclear and civilian infrastructure, and support renewed diplomacy under UN resolution 487. He cautioned that the strikes on nuclear facilities endangered ongoing diplomatic efforts and stressed that a peaceful resolution must not be derailed by further military escalation. "Israeli unlawful strikes against Iran came at the time of intense diplomatic engagement on Iran's nuclear issue. These illegal actions must not be allowed to scuttle that dialogue. Parties must swiftly return to the path of negotiations, which is the only viable means to reach a sustainable agreement regarding the Iranian nuclear program", he added. Also Read: Europe pushes diplomatic solution to Iran-Israel war in Geneva Highlighting ongoing negotiations between the US, E3 and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program, Ahmad said striking nuclear sites now risked undermining these delicate talks. He also called for the IAEA to maintain non-political, professional monitoring of nuclear facilities to ensure transparent and reliable reporting. 'This is a pivotal moment. A durable solution cannot be achieved through force,' he asserted. 'Respect for international law and the UN Charter is the only path forward. Diplomacy must be given a chance.'

EU says Israel may have breached terms of partnership agreement

European Union flags flutter outside the EU Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium May 5, 2021. PHOTO: REUTERS Listen to article The European Union's diplomatic service said on Friday there are indications that Israel has breached its human rights obligations under the terms of a pact governing its ties with the bloc, according to a document seen by Reuters. Citing assessments by independent international institutions, the European External Action Service said "there are indications that Israel would be in breach of its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement". The report comes after months of deepening concern in European capitals about Israel's operations in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the enclave. "Israel's continued restrictions to the provision of food, medicines, medical equipment, and other vital supplies affect the entire population of Gaza present on the affected territory," the document said. The EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced in May that the bloc would examine whether Israel is complying with the terms of its pact with the bloc, after over half of EU members backed conducting a review. Under the agreement, which came into force in 2000, the EU and Israel agreed that their relationship 'shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles". Israel has said that it respects international law and that operations in Gaza are necessary to destroy Hamas, the Palestinian group responsible for the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. Israel's mission to the EU did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The new document includes a section dedicated to the situation in Gaza, covering issues related to denial of humanitarian aid, attacks with a significant number of casualties, attacks on hospitals and medical facilities, displacement, and lack of accountability. The report also looks at the situation in the West Bank, including settler violence. The document relies on "facts verified by and assessments made by independent international institutions, and with a focus on most recent events in Gaza and the West Bank," it said. The review was proposed in early May by Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, who had raised concerns about Israeli policies 'exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation'. EU foreign ministers are set to discuss the review during a gathering in Brussels on Monday. Member countries remain divided in their approach to Israel. While some ministers could advocate for moving toward taking action based on the review, no concrete decisions are expected at Monday's session. Diplomats expect EU officials will reach out to Israel with the outcome of the review in an effort to influence its behaviour, and that ministers will return to the subject during a meeting with July.
