Sapura Secured Technologies bolsters Malaysia's cyber defence with AI tech
Sapura Secured Technologies has secured the largest booth at the 17th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, taking place from May 20 to May 24.
PETALING JAYA : Defence electronics firm Sapura Secured Technologies (SST) and its sister company, Velum Labs, are showcasing their locally developed cybersecurity solutions powered by artificial intelligence (AI) at the 17th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima 2025) this week.
Shakir Badri Serpudin.
SST's chief operating officer Shakir Badri Serpudin reaffirmed the company's commitment to advancing Malaysia's technology sovereignty, reducing dependence on foreign partners, and enhancing the nation's cybersecurity ecosystem.
Velum Labs secured a tender two years ago to become the cyber intelligence provider to the Malaysian government until 2029.
'We will continue to develop and invest in local talent to achieve tech sovereignty for the nation. Our role is to uplift the local supply chain and bring in partners among local companies.
'We also want to showcase how AI and biometrics can be augmented using our solutions so that our defence forces and government agencies can use these capabilities in their day-to-day operations as well as for specific missions they are tasked with,' Shakir said at Lima 2025.
Occupying the largest booth at the exhibition, SST unveiled its latest border security technology.
Rizman Merican.
Velum Labs CEO Rizman Merican said the cyber intelligence firm places a strong emphasis on nurturing and recruiting talent from Malaysia's young talent pool.
He said the company scouted for promising individuals through government-sponsored hacking competitions, where they recruited about 20% of their talent and taught them the specialised skills needed to build an innovative idea from the ground up.
'One of the things that our founder believes in is that we do not buy capabilities and resell them.
'If we want to learn about a new solution, we need to learn it and build it ourselves. It is one of the key things that we do at Velum,' Rizman said.
Meanwhile, Shakir expressed hope that the technology displayed by SST and Velum Labs could dispel misconceptions about the credibility of local innovation.
'We are opening the eyes of Malaysians with what we are showcasing at Lima 2025. When we show that AI is here, that it's ready and we are already operationalising it, then the local stakeholders can actually see what we Malaysians can do.'
He added that SST is looking forward to forging a deeper collaboration with other Southeast Asian countries as Malaysia chairs the bloc this year, particularly in the areas of technology and talent mobility.
'We want to make sure we are creating high-value jobs, retaining capital and generating a multiplier economy.
'We also see opportunities from our Asean industry partners to collaborate in terms of technology development and strengthen the supply chain and interoperability within Asean. We want to shape a more self-reliant Asean,' Shakir said.

MACC to question Tan Sri over RM143m asset seizure, sukuk misuse and gambling linked to Klang Valley highway project after hospital discharge
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — A Tan Sri under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged misuse of sukuk funds involving a Klang Valley highway project is expected to be questioned soon. The individual, believed to be a highway concession holder, was recently discharged from a private hospital and is also being probed over foreign assets and high-stakes gambling activities involving millions of ringgit. According to a report by Astro Awani, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Tan Sri has not yet given a statement due to his recent medical treatment. 'A statement has not yet been recorded from the Tan Sri, but I have been informed that doctors have recently allowed him to be discharged. My officers will be contacting him soon to arrange an appointment,' Azam said yesterday. He added that although the Tan Sri is considered a key individual in the case, MACC has already recorded statements from 45 other witnesses. 'He is indeed one of the individuals we have yet to question, but we already have testimonies from other witnesses. I cannot confirm whether additional witnesses will be required after his statement,' he said. Sources said MACC had obtained medical confirmation from the doctor on the Tan Sri's condition before arranging to question him. The investigation centres on the suspected misappropriation of sukuk bond funds that were meant for the construction of a highway. On June 3 last year, MACC disclosed that it had seized about RM143 million in assets from the individual as part of its probe. The seized items included 14 personal bank accounts with RM4.5 million, eight company accounts holding RM33 million, a luxury condominium and a parcel of land worth RM24.5 million, nine luxury vehicles valued at RM7.65 million, designer watches worth around RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, and jewellery and diamonds estimated at RM6 million. MACC also seized four horses valued at RM400,000, high-end alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million, foreign assets estimated at over RM15 million, and assets linked to gambling activities involving about RM20 million. Azam said asset declaration notices have been served to the Tan Sri and other related parties.

UK announces major investment in science, technology, and defence by 2030
LONDON, June 8 — The UK government today announced £86 billion (US$108 billion) of investment in science, technology, and defence by 2030, days before it unveils its spending plan for the coming years. Labour finance minister Rachel Reeves has announced drastic cuts to public budgets in recent months amid tight fiscal conditions and has also authorised more borrowing for investment, unlocking a total of £113 billion (US$142 billion) by the end of the decade. Within this framework, £86 billion (US$108 billion) will be invested 'to turbo-charge our fastest growing sectors, from tech and life sciences, to advanced manufacturing and defence,' the government said in a statement. Reeves is also set to announce a funding boost of up to £30 billion (US$38 billion) for the under-pressure National Health Service on Wednesday, when she presents the government's broader review of UK public spending over the coming years, according to The Times newspaper. The £86 billion (US$108 billion) investment will target 'people's priorities: health, security and the economy,' the government said. The investment plan will enable the development of 'innovation clusters' across the UK and give local government leaders powers to decide where their funding goes, it added. Reeves hopes the spending will boost sluggish growth, which is also likely to suffer from the trade war launched by US President Donald Trump. The government announced earlier this week that the review would include plans to double investment in public transport in England's urban regions by 2030, to over £15 billion (US$19 billion). The defence ministry also seems certain to receive a budget boost in Wednesday's review, but other departments will have to tighten their belts beyond the cuts already announced in March. Areas expected to be targeted include support for disabled people and government operating costs. Thousands gathered in central London on Saturday to protest against those anticipated measures, with many holding placards reading 'tax the rich, stop the cuts—welfare not warfare.' — AFP
