Video released by U.S. Coast Guard captures moment of Titan submersible implosion

HALIFAX - A new video released by the United States Coast Guard contains a sound investigators believe is the moment the Titan submersible imploded as it dove on the wreck of the Titanic nearly two years ago.
The June 18, 2023 implosion claimed the lives of five people, including OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush, who was pilot of the submersible.
In the video submitted to the coast guard by OceanGate , Rush's wife, Wendy Rush, and Gary Foss — both members of the submersible's tracking team — are shown in front of computer screens in the pilothouse of Titan's support vessel Polar Prince.
Shortly into the video a noise can be heard, prompting Wendy Rush to turn to Foss and say: 'What was that bang?'
The video continues with the pair seemingly unaware of the significance of the noise, and at another point Wendy Rush acknowledges receiving a text message showing the submersible had dropped two of its weights as it descended.
The video — first reported by BBC — was posted Thursday on a U.S. Defense Department website.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 24, 2025.

'Titan' Sub Pilot, Who Led Trip That Killed 5, Was Like the 'Emperor Who Had No Clothes': Former Colleague (Exclusive)

Two years since OceanGate's Titan sub imploded — killing five people — and a fuller picture is now emerging about what really happened before and during tragedy "The emperor had no clothes when I arrived," former employee David Lochridge says of working with OeanGate co-founder Stockton Rush The company tells PEOPLE in a statement: "We again offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who died"David Lochridge doesn't mince words when it comes to describing his time working for Stockton Rush at the experimental diving company OceanGate, which eventually launched a doomed quest down to the Titanic in 2023 — and five people died. 'I didn't realize that they were so good at cutting corners until I actually got across there,' Lochridge tells PEOPLE in a new interview, marking one of the fist times he is speaking publicly. In the two years since OceanGate's Titan sub imploded — killing Rush, the company's co-founder, and four passengers — a fuller picture is now emerging about what really happened before and during tragedy. The U.S. Coast Guard is preparing to release a final report, after lengthy investigation. Some of those close to Rush and the victims, like Lochridge, are also speaking out, including in Netflix's new documentary Titan: The Oceangate Disaster, which premieres on Wednesday, June 11. Lochridge also appeared on the Today show on Friday, June 6. A former diver in the U.K.'s Royal Navy, he worked as OceanGate's operations director until early 2018 and says he was closely involved in the training and preparation for what the company promised to potential explorers (for a hefty fee): trips to wondrous undersea artifacts like the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Canada. "The company needed a lot of I would say my experience put into it to be able to create this competent team, to be able to actually go out and perform this job that they wanted me to do,' Lochridge says. But 'the emperor had no clothes when I arrived." "I'll never forget this. It was Day 1 [working at OceanGate in 2016]. We landed. … Stockton, I think he was at home or at [the lab], and he stated that the new submersible Titan would not be having any underwater communications in it,' Lochridge recalls. 'I honestly thought he was joking,' he says of Rush, 'but he was deadly serious.' In the roughly two years that Lochridge was a top official at OceanGate, 'I was always met with a lot of resistance,' he says. 'But at the same time, I had to watch what I was doing. I was the new boy in the company.' He says safety warnings included more than an initial lack of concern over underwater communication. Lochridge cites the monitoring system for the Titan's novel carbon fiber hull — the same system that showed eerie cracking noises. 'If I had heard noises like that in a sub, I would never go on it again,' Lochridge says. 'Nobody would ever go on it again.' He also says some of the glue used to put components together was applied merely with spatulas. 'There was nobody there verifying that there were no voids,' he says. 'And it's like somebody putting icing on a birthday cake.' Amid the scrutiny and criticism from people like Lochridge, however, Rush and OceanGate do have defenders for the work they were attempting. (And another person who went on OceanGate dives previously pushed back on Lochridge.) "I believe that it was a noble effort," Fred Hagen, a developer who made two successful trips to the Titanic on Titan, tells PEOPLE. "The goals were to enable mankind to access the depths of the abyss and to further our understanding and to foster a sense of connectivity to the bottom of the sea, which is integral to the future of life on Earth," Hagen continues. "And Stockton took some risk and lived outside the box and paid for it with his life." Lochridge's own relationship with Rush and OceanGate collapsed by early 2018 and he was fired well before the final, fatal dive. He says he sought to speak out about the company for years, behind closed doors, starting with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. 'Even during my termination, he [Rush] said, 'You know, this could fail,' — which it did,' Lochridge says, adding, 'Unfortunately, … people were in it.' In a statement to PEOPLE, OceanGate said, 'We again offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who died on June 18, 2023, and to all those impacted by the tragedy.' In the wake of the implosion, the company said, 'OceanGate permanently wound down its operations and focused its resources on fully cooperating with the investigations being conducted.' Titan Sub Disaster: Discovery Documentary Shows Wendy Rush Reacting To Fatal ‘Bang'

Newly released video footage captured when OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush's wife reacted in real-time to the Titan submersible's fatal implosion last year. Stockton and his wife both have long, storied family histories in America, which were under speculation before the submarine went viral for killing its five passengers last year. The submarine lacked many of the qualifications, certifications, and even respected design systems that previous deep-water subs all had in their pockets. From the start, even the most vocal in the deep-sea diving industry, like renowned filmmaker James Cameron, were rightfully worried about OceanGate's missions. Stockton's wife, Wendy, the daughter of the couple who founded the Macy's department store, can be seen shockingly aware in the recently released video that something went wrong on the 'Titan's' final, deadly dive. The chilling footage, obtained by the U.S. Coast Guard and featured in the Discovery documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, shows Wendy seated in front of a computer on the 'mother ship,' or launching ship of the submarine above, as the sub descended toward the Titanic's wreckage nearly 4,000 feet below on June 18, 2023. Stockton took on the job, alongside the OceanGate team, of continuing to put tourists on the faulty submarine. One documentary team even went on a short dive with the Titan and Stockton before the host of Expedition Unknown, Josh Gates, had to call his channel's executive and beg that the media team be pulled from such a liability of an assignment. In lamens terms, the submarine was already cracked in the main hull and showed signs of its weakness to even the most untrained eyes – like TV hosts. According to the newly released footage, Wendy can be seen suddenly reacting to a loud sound: the very moment the sub's carbon-fiber hull catastrophically failed, killing all five people aboard instantly. In response, she can be seen calmly asking two other OceanGate staff in the video, 'What was that bang?' At the time, the Titan was at a depth of about 3,300 meters, where the immense underwater pressure left no survivors and almost immediately killed all aboard, as confirmed by The victims included Stockton Rush, British explorer Hamish Harding, renowned French diver Paul Henri Nargeolet, and British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood with his 19-year-old son, Suleman. Suleman, at his age and lack of deep diving experience, had no reason to be on the submarine, but Stockton had decided that it was fine even in the unregulated vessel. The submarine was manned by modified PlayStation controllers, something Stockton previously bragged to the media about, per CBS News. While the tragedy officially began with the implosion, the Coast Guard's investigation revealed a dangerous flaw—delamination (a breakdown of the main hull's carbon fiber)—had been detected as early as 2022. Despite repeated warnings from engineers and fellow deep-sea explorers, OceanGate pressed forward with risky expeditions, pushing their unconventional carbon-fiber design that had never been properly certified. As seen in the documentary, the carbon fiber design had failed on previous dives, emitting loud bangs to all onboard. This forced Stockton and OceanGate to completely redesign a similar submarine, which also failed. The carbon fiber wasn't the only weird engineering choice. OceanGate also chose to build a submarine that, in the most simple of ways, mismatched previous submarine designs that successfully reached those dangerous depths. Instead of the widely accepted, in terms of modern deep-sea diving experts, a teardrop-shaped vessel that barely holds one or two passengers, Stockton demanded that his design resemble the stereotypical 'log in the water' design to carry more passengers. More unregulated passengers in an unregulated submarine started to raise concerns among many industry experts before its final tragic implosion. James Cameron's deep-sea submarine, which reached the deepest depths of the ocean floor, was shaped like that raindrop design. His successful dives can be seen in his 2014 film DeepSea Challenge. Cameron has publicly told many media outlets that Stockton and OceanGate were a red flag even before the tragic accident. After the disaster, OceanGate ceased operations and pledged cooperation with the United States Coast Guard investigation. Some engineers and 'dive experts' are now testifying to the Coast Guard about how they understood that Stockton was losing his mind and that the submarine was destined to fail. Some employees claimed to the documentary team that Stockton fired them when voicing concerns or that they were anxious about voicing concerns about retaining their jobs at OceanGate.

Days of Our Lives Recap: Bo Reunites With His Family

Days of Our Lives Recap: Bo Reunites With His Family originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Hospital/Recovery Center: Hope walks Bo into the sitting area and he can't believe he's been out for two years and she stayed by his side. He suddenly has a memory and says how sorry he is for what he did to her, Kayla and everyone (For those who don't remember, Bo was acting like Victor and was quite menacing, which is why Shawn Douglas shot him). Hope says everything is forgiven and begins kissing him all over his face. Ciara Alice and Shawn Douglas are standing in Bo's room. She can't believe his recovery happened so quickly. Ciara thanks her brother for securing the serum. Shawn D notes he worked with Kayla, Steve and John. They both hope John will continue to recover. Ciara walks out when Shawn Douglas gets a call from Kayla. He updates his aunt on his dad's condition when Kayla clearly tells him about John's death. Ciara walks into the sitting area and freaks out a bit to find her parents kissing. They tell her to join, and Bo is so excited to see his grown-up daughter. They embrace and exchange I love yous. Ciara says she has a little boy and girl and wants him to meet them soon. Further, she says she and Ben have been traveling the world on a boat just like they did. Bo says he's going to have to meet Ben and make sure he's worthy of his daughter (Oh Lord…). Ciara says he's a great guy and a good father (and a former serial killer, but whatever). Just then, Shawn Douglas joins the party. Shawn Douglas hugs his father and he says he feels so blessed to have his family around him. Shawn D asks what he remembers about what happened to him. Bo says he remembers having cancer and being on death's door. Shawn D says he shot him and has been haunted by it ever since. Bo stops his son and says he has nothing to be sorry for. He remembers what happened and knows he was only doing what was necessary to protect his mother. Bo says the one person responsible is Megan Hathaway (can she come back, please?) and Hope agrees. Bo pulls his son close and says how proud he is to be Shawn D's father. They pass around croissants and Ciara says Chelsea will be stopping by soon with her baby. Bo is stunned to learn he has four grandchildren, in total. He asks about Claire and Shawn D says she is working as a public relations specialist in South Africa with Theo Carver. Bo is rightfully surprised until Ciara provides a few more details. He moves along to Belle and Shawn D says they are divorced but are friends. He realizes how much he has missed and asks about all the news from Salem. Hope tells Bo about Kimberly and says Shane indicated they found her cancer in time and should recover after treatment. Bo wants to go visit her and then shifts to asking about his other family, including Philip and Brady. Hope says Philip is still sparring for control of Titan but with someone new, Xander Cook. Bo remembers him as one of Victor's henchmen, but they explain he is now the co-CEO of Titan and is also his half-brother. It doesn't truly surprise him to learn Victor had yet another child. He asks about Victor, and they carefully tell him about his father's passing. Bo can't believe someone so indestructible could be gone. He learns about the plane crash and asks how Maggie is holding up. Hope says she's doing ok with the support of the family. He freaks out a bit because he never got the chance to tell Victor he loved him or to say goodbye. Hope tries to comfort him but realizes there's more bad news to give and tells him about Doug. He collapses in tears and says how sorry he is. Bo says he's so sorry he wasn't there and knows how much he loved his princess. Ciara leaves and returns with her children, Addie and Bo. She says she's been telling them about their grandfather their whole lives. Little Bo says hi to his grandpa and he heads over to give him a hug and sit in his lap (adorable). Johnny and Chanel's Apartment: Chanel says Carrie just called and reports his Grandpa John died. Johnny can't believe his grandpa is gone. He says he doesn't think he lived up to his name but Chanel shuts that mess down, saying he is brave with a heart of gold. Further, she notes John absolutely adored him. Johnny says he needs to get over to his grandmother's place and Chanel heads out with him. Salem Inn – Paul and Andrew's Room: Andrew arrives and immediately embraces a distraught Paul. He thinks the whole situation is unfair as his dad was so close to being home with Marlena. Andrew says John lived and died as a hero and is responsible for saving Bo's life. Paul understands everything Andrew is saying but wishes, this once, he hadn't played the hero. Paul says his dad was getting better and can't believe everything went down hill so quickly. Andrew knows that makes the situation much worse. Paul wants to get over to Marlena's place to make sure they give her support. Andrew thinks they should stay put so he can be Paul's rock. Horton Square: Marlena walks through the square and takes a seat by Tom and Alice's plaque. Flashback: Marlena remembers one of her weddings to John. In real-time, she says how much she misses John already. Marlena and John's Penthouse: Carrie, Will and Eric are gathering food from the neighbors. They wonder where Marlena is and Carrie says she wasn't there when she arrived this morning. Will gets a call from his mother saying Sydney broke her arm and collar bone. She has to have surgery which means neither of them will be in Salem for the funeral. Just then, Marlena walks in and says she went out to inform John's dad about his passing. Will says they could have gone with her but she says she has to learn to do things on her own. Carrie hugs her and says she doesn't have to worry about being alone. Marlena bypasses her comments and starts looking for thank you notes to write to all the people who brought food. Will and Eric says they will handle it and want her to take care of herself. Marlena says she has some arrangements to make and excuses herself to the bedroom. Marlena returns with information about John's wishes for his funeral (which they put together after Doug passed). John wanted a reception at the Brady Pub and Carrie says she and Will will take care of it. With that, they hug Marlena and exit. Eric asks if his mother wants to rest but she thinks she simply wants to sit with him. He says he loves his mother and wants to know if it would help to talk. Marlena agrees and talks about what it was like when she first met John. She immediately knew he would risk his life for the people he loved. She says Bo was like his brother and Eric says they were brothers. Marlena gets weepy and says 'there's never enough time' when someone is your everything. Just then, Johnny and Chanel arrive. Johnny asks about his mother and Eric lets him know why she and Sydney won't make it. Marlena hopes Sami can find peace as John was the man who raised her. She turns to Johnny and says she hopes he can find peace with his own father, as well. Johnny says today is about her and Grandpa John, his namesake. Johnny hopes he can make him proud. Marlena assures him that he always made John proud. Marlena tells Eric that his Uncle Bo is on the mend. She says she's happy for everyone, but wonders if their family's miracle came at John's expense. She wonders if she's being terrible but Eric says she's simply being human. Marlena says John risked his life to save Bo and notes what an extraordinary man he is… was. Horton Square: Carrie and Will run into Paul and Andrew. They all embrace and discuss their relationships to John. Andrew says they were talking about all the adventures their fathers went on together and what a great team they made. Carrie wonders if anyone would have ever dreamed the sons of great ISA agents would one day fall head over heels in love. Endings Johnny and Chanel return home. He was on the phone with Alex who told him to take as much time as he needs to deal with John's death. Chanel promises to be with him every step of the way. Johnny thanks her for loving him and they kiss. Ciara Alice wants to get Bo and Addie back to the hotel and Shawn Douglas agrees to go with them so their dad can rest. They all embrace and agree to see each other later in the day. Bo and Hope take a seat and he admits to being a little overwhelmed but is basically is thankful for having his family around him. He is thrilled to say the one thing that hasn't changed is his love for her. With that, they kiss. Carrie, Will, Paul and Andrew return to Marlena's penthouse. She's so glad to see Paul and Andrew. Paul says the love John had for her was everything. He knows she's aware but Marlena is very clearly touched by his words. Andrew thanks Eric for offering to be the officiant at their wedding but says they have put it off indefinitely. Marlena begs them to have their ceremony in Salem before they go. Paul and Andrew agree to do it in honor of John. Hope looks at pictures of Bo when Shawn Douglas returns. They embrace in excitement over Bo's recovery. Shawn D asks where his father is and Hope says he's back in his room. He takes the opportunity to tell her John died. Keep checking back for the latest Days of Our Lives recaps!
