Chennai Mayor hands over Rs 7L aid to sanitary workers
CHENNAI: On the occasion of May Day, Chennai Mayor R Priya distributed welfare kits worth Rs 7.41 lakh to 400 sanitation and malaria workers at an event held at the Ripon Building. The mayor also took part in a feast organised for the workers.
Currently, 3,959 permanent sanitation workers, 420 Non Muster Roll (NMR) workers and 4,990 workers from SHGs are employed in Chennai corporation. The welfare kits, which include two uniforms, towels, a cap, tiffin box, water bottle and a bag, will be distributed to all of them.
Addressing the workers, the mayor said based on Chief Minister MK Stalin's directive, identity cards were issued last month through Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) to both permanent and temporary sanitation workers in government and private sectors. The ID cards will enable them to access various welfare schemes.
The mayor also highlighted the establishment of one-stop centres for cleanliness workers in all 15 zones to offer support services for the workers.

Barely a few months ago, the concrete road was laid, but residents were shocked when a day ago they saw mastic asphalt being laid on the same concrete road. The reason for it, the BMC said, was the absence of a drainage line, owing to which water was stagnating. As a temporary fix, the contractor is laying asphalt. "Under the Mumbai beautification plan, the footpath was to be laid along with the drainage line. Therefore, when the road was proposed for concretisation, the laying of the drainage line wasn't taken up. However, now as the work is completed, it has come to light that the final road level isn't proper. As a temporary measure, the mastic is being laid, but we are trying to see what could be a permanent solution to this. That work would be done once the monsoon months are over," said a BMC official. Mhatre, however, explaining the mess, said the fact that the final road level wasn't proper only came to light now as the rains have arrived. "There is water stagnation at multiple spots on the new road. The root issues were clear — poorly laid PQC (Pavement Quality Concrete), incorrect camber and slope gradient, and inadequate stormwater inlets. Instead of correcting these as per tender norms, the contractor has simply applied mastic asphalt patching — a cost-cutting shortcut to avoid proper rework," said Mhatre. Residents fear that the stopgap solution will lead to quicker road damage, especially during monsoon. However, BMC said that if these measures weren't taken, it could have led to water accumulation again on a heavy rain day. As a part of the BMC's ambitious concretisation project, close to 700km of Mumbai roads are being concretised at a cost of over Rs 12,000 crore.

Navi Mumbai civic body identifies 527 bldgs as ‘dangerous'
Following a survey of old and dilapidated buildings, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) identified 527 buildings as 'dangerous' and urged the residents to vacate. 2,158 artistes receive postal accident insurance in single day
Mangaluru: During the Yakshadhruva Patla Decennial Celebration 2025, held under the auspices of the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Trust at Adyar Garden on Sunday, 2,158 artistes from Yakshagana, theatre, Daivaradhane, and achievers in kambala were provided with postal accident insurance, ensuring coverage of Rs 10 lakh each for their families. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The insurance premium was sponsored by the Patla Foundation, and around 150 staff members from the Mangaluru postal division conducted the event with great discipline and coordination, stated a release from the Mangaluru Postal Division. For the past three years, the department of posts actively participated in the public service of Yaksha Sambhrama, and this year it set a new record by providing this facility to 2,158 artistes in a single day. A special feature was that all these artistes received their policy bonds printed on-site. This postal accident insurance is a service offered by the Indian postal department, India Post Payments Bank, and Reliance Insurance Company. For an annual premium of just Rs 550, it provides coverage of Rs 10 lakh, along with benefits like inpatient/outpatient treatment and reimbursement of educational expenses. This year, the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Trust sponsored this facility for artistes at a cost of approximately Rs 11.9 lakh. The Patla Foundation organised several schemes for the welfare of artistrs, and the postal accident insurance scheme was widely appreciated. For the third consecutive year, the responsibility of conducting this initiative was entrusted to the fepartment by the yrust's gounder President, Patla Satish Shetty. He was honoured by denior duperintendent M Sudhakar Mallya on behalf of the Mangaluru postal division. Claims for compensation of Rs 10 lakh are in process for the families of three artistes who died in accidents, the release added.
