Players' union accuse Gianni Infantino of overseeing 'MASSACRE' of player welfare from his 'ivory tower' as they launch scathing attack at Club World Cup
French players' union the UNFP has criticised the Club World Cup, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused of overseeing a 'massacre' of player welfare.
The UNFP claimed that Infantino, watching on from his 'ivory tower', isn't concerned about the impact that the extra games will have on the physical and mental health of players.
As reported by the Associated Press, the UNFP said in a statement: 'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers. From the height of his ivory tower, which he parades around the world, the FIFA president is not bothered by the fate that the international calendar reserves for the game's leading players.
'His (Infantino's) Club World Cup proves, to the point of absurdity, that it is urgent to stop this massacre game. He flouts the physical and mental health of players for a few more dollars.'
Infantino has received much criticism regarding the Club World Cup, with this year's edition expanded to include 32 teams.
There have been widespread concerns about the impact that involvement in the tournament will have on players.
The comments from UNFP follow on from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's criticisms of the Club World Cup.
Klopp, who now works as the head of global soccer for Red Bull, described the tournament as 'the worst idea ever in football'.
Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he said: 'The Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football.
'People who have never had anything to do with day-to-day business are coming up with ideas.
'I fear that next season players will suffer injuries they've never had before. If not, then it'll happen at the World Cup or afterwards.'
Many of the leading clubs in world football, such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, are taking part in the competition, with concerns being raised about how players will be affected in the long term given their lack of rest this summer.

City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well."

According to The Sun, Grealish is happy to bide his time and would be willing to wait for options as the transfer window progresses. City remain on Club World Cup duty with pre-season fixtures having been shelved as a result of the tournament. Grealish has time to consider options but will have to think carefully as he targets a place in England's World Cup squad this time next year. Guardiola recently opened up on discussions he held with Grealish regarding his future. He said: 'It was a conversation between him and the club and they decide. Jack is an exceptional player, the only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions, and we decide that he has to play - and the club was honest, he was honest. 'We decide the best is that he has a place that he can feel he can play and come back to be the player that he was in the year of the treble or all his career at Aston Villa; without him it would have been impossible or more difficult to achieve the treble. 'The fact is the last two seasons he hasn't played much minutes and he has to come back to play and get the butterflies back in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.'
