Players' union accuse Gianni Infantino of overseeing 'MASSACRE' of player welfare from his 'ivory tower' as they launch scathing attack at Club World Cup

French players' union the UNFP has criticised the Club World Cup, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused of overseeing a 'massacre' of player welfare.
The UNFP claimed that Infantino, watching on from his 'ivory tower', isn't concerned about the impact that the extra games will have on the physical and mental health of players.
As reported by the Associated Press, the UNFP said in a statement: 'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers. From the height of his ivory tower, which he parades around the world, the FIFA president is not bothered by the fate that the international calendar reserves for the game's leading players.
'His (Infantino's) Club World Cup proves, to the point of absurdity, that it is urgent to stop this massacre game. He flouts the physical and mental health of players for a few more dollars.'
Infantino has received much criticism regarding the Club World Cup, with this year's edition expanded to include 32 teams.
There have been widespread concerns about the impact that involvement in the tournament will have on players.
The comments from UNFP follow on from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's criticisms of the Club World Cup.
Klopp, who now works as the head of global soccer for Red Bull, described the tournament as 'the worst idea ever in football'.
Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he said: 'The Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football.
'People who have never had anything to do with day-to-day business are coming up with ideas.
'I fear that next season players will suffer injuries they've never had before. If not, then it'll happen at the World Cup or afterwards.'
Many of the leading clubs in world football, such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, are taking part in the competition, with concerns being raised about how players will be affected in the long term given their lack of rest this summer.

Guardiola worried that lack of rest after Club World Cup could 'destroy' Man City

June 30 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them. City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well."

Jack Grealish happy to bide his time with clear goal in mind for new season

Jack Grealish appears set to leave Manchester City this summer but a move away from the Etihad is proving to be more difficult than first thought for the England winger despite huge interest Jack Grealish is happy to play a waiting game regarding his future despite Pep Guardiola telling him to leave. Grealish appears to have little future at Manchester City having dropped down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium. The situation for the England winger then got even worse after he was axed entirely for City's squad for the Club World Cup in America. A number of clubs have expressed an interest in potentially rescuing him including Napoli, Everton and Newcastle. ‌ But Grealish's £300k-per-week wages have proven to be a massive stumbling block, with none of those clubs able to afford that pay packet. One solution would be for City to massively subsidise Grealish's wages for any club that signs him. ‌ But as it stands, it appears that he is in no rush to find his next club. According to The Sun, Grealish is happy to bide his time and would be willing to wait for options as the transfer window progresses. City remain on Club World Cup duty with pre-season fixtures having been shelved as a result of the tournament. Grealish has time to consider options but will have to think carefully as he targets a place in England's World Cup squad this time next year. Guardiola recently opened up on discussions he held with Grealish regarding his future. He said: 'It was a conversation between him and the club and they decide. Jack is an exceptional player, the only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions, and we decide that he has to play - and the club was honest, he was honest. 'We decide the best is that he has a place that he can feel he can play and come back to be the player that he was in the year of the treble or all his career at Aston Villa; without him it would have been impossible or more difficult to achieve the treble. 'The fact is the last two seasons he hasn't played much minutes and he has to come back to play and get the butterflies back in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.' ‌ Where should Grealish go next? Share your thoughts in the comments below Grealish is not the only Man City star who has a decision to make on an exit. Kyle Walker is also in a similar situation following his loan spell at AC Milan. Asked for an update on the duo, Guardiola replied: 'I don't have any news, it's the same for Jack. Regarding the links, I don't know. You have to ask.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Key element in Marcus Rashford Man Utd exit emerges amid Bryan Mbeumo thoughts

Ruben Amorim has already added Matheus Cunha to Manchester United's ranks this summer but further Old Trafford ins and outs are expected before transfer deadline day After watching some of their Premier League rivals strengthen in the early part of the summer, Manchester United are aiming to do the same. Liverpool have announced record signing Florian Wirtz and Manchester CIty made a number of early additions ahead of the Club World Cup, but it's been slower going for Ruben Amorim's side. There was an early bit of business, with Matheus Cunha completing his permanent move from Wolves. United have also handed Tom Heaton a new contract, but the veteran goalkeeper won't be offended if we say fans will likely hope that's not the last announcement of the summer. ‌ One thing which won't be happening this year is an Old Trafford return for Paul Pogba. The French midfielder had been touted for a third spell during his time as a free agent, but has instead opted for a move to Monaco. ‌ Head coach Amorim is looking to freshen up in a number of areas as he aims to build a squad capable of playing to his tactical preferences. Bryan Mbeumo is a major attacking target, while further investment could hinge on an ability to offload some out-of-favour high earners. One of those high earners is Marcus Rashford, and we've got a bit on his next move today. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from around Old Trafford. Rashford's ex-colleague shares advice Timothy Fosu-Mensah broke into Manchester United's first team at the same time as Marcus Rashford, and believes the forward needs to ensure he can find a club where he feels good. The Dutch defender made his Premier League bow on the same day as Rashford, and was speaking as he continues his own search for a new club after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. 'I just want him to be happy. Everybody just wants him to be happy," Fosu-Mensah told The Independent. "The most important things is for him to feel good, for him to feel happy. Look, the quality is definitely there. Nobody needs to say anything about this quality, because he's a top player.' Rashford looked to be enjoying his football during a loan spell at Aston Villa last term, earning an England recall. However, he left at the end of the season after Villa missed out on Champions League qualification. ‌ Dressing room feelings on Mbeumo Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee both appeared to green-light a move for Bryan Mbeumo with their social media activity. The pair 'liked' a report indicating United are poised to continue talks over a move for the Brentford star. Cameroon international Mbeumo has been eyed by both United and Tottenham. The latter are managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, and can offer Champions League football, but those might not end up being deciding factors. ‌ Mbeumo has a year left on his current deal in West London, and Brentford hold an option to extend it until 2027. He is due back in pre-season training if no agreement can be reached before then, but exit talk persists. Onana could leave on loan Manchester United are ready to sanction a loan exit for Andre Onana, according to The Sun. The former Inter Milan star has had ups and downs since moving to Old Trafford in 2023, and a difficult second half of the 2024-25 season has led to increased chatter around an exit. ‌ Monaco are said to be among the interested parties, though their financial situation has prompted some doubt over a permanent switch. Philipp Kohn and Radoslaw Majecki shared goalkeeping duties at the Ligue 1 club last term as they finished third and qualified for the Champions League Emi Martinez remains an option to replace Onana if United do move for an alternative. If they are to pursue a cheaper alternative, Botafogo keeper John is said to be an option.
