Headless alligator found in Florida canal ignites search for culprit, state says
An alligator missing both its head and tail was found in a Florida canal, and state wildlife officials suspect it may be the work of a rogue hunter.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) learned of the discovery Wednesday, May 14, after someone saw a carcass in one of Cape Coral's many canals. The city is about a 130-mile drive south from Tampa.
'An FWC officer responded to the scene to investigate the incident. This is currently still an active investigation,' FWC officials said in an email to McClatchy News. 'It is worth noting that it is illegal to harvest or possess an alligator outside of alligator hunting season.'
Alligator heads and skulls are a prized trophy among hunters, as well as being a popular novelty sold on the internet. As for the tail, the large stretch of meat is prized for being 'very tender,' experts say.
Gloria Baenen spotted the carcass May 13 after noticing a 'strong, fishy odor' around her pontoon boat, WBBH reported.
'Someone said there was a gator but no head,' Baenen told the station. 'I found it — belly-up, floating near the boat.'
The area of the discovery was identified by WINK as Bimini Basin, which is a body of water surrounded by homes and linked by canals to the Caloosahatchee River.
Investigators did not disclose the size of the alligator or a potential cause of death.
Florida allows alligator hunting for people 18 or older, but it's by permit only, limited to specific areas, and the season runs from Aug. 15 to Nov. 1. Hunters who manage to harvest an alligator are required to report it to the FWC by the end of the season.
'The Statewide Alligator Hunt is a highly sought after limited entry hunt; there are often more than 15,000 applicants that will apply for approximately 7,000 permits,' FWC reports.

While News Channel 8 was interviewing the family, a gator emerged from the water again before slipping back in. 'I have a 7-year-old sister,' said one family member. 'And I just think, if she was at the fence, would he have done the same thing to her?' Zeus miraculously survived the attack. He suffered a fractured and displaced jaw, along with multiple puncture wounds around his neck. 'The vet said it looked like his whole head was in the gator's mouth,' said Alkhatib. 'Even he said, 'I don't know how he survived.'' 'I honestly can't believe he is alive,' Alkhatib said. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has sent out trappers, but so far, they have not been able to capture the gator. Zeus is now recovering from several surgeries. Florida man arrested for repeatedly stabbing shark in head as ‘revenge' for stealing fish after gory video goes viral
A Florida man claiming to be a boat captain was arrested Thursday after admitting he repeatedly stabbed a shark in the head in a Snapchat video that went viral late last month. Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after gruesomely knifing a bull shark near a wreck site off Key West on May 22 in a video titled 'Bud broke my rod,' Local 10 reported. Garrett, who is identified as a captain on Second Nature Charters' website, was turned over by an anonymous tipster who saw the horrifying video and reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, citing 'safety concerns,' according to the outlet. 'Yah, that's me,' Garrett admitted when authorities presented him with the gory footage. Garrett claimed that his actions fell in line with the typical method used to deter sharks from stealing catches, and that stabbing one would ward others off. 3 Garrett confirmed to authorities that he was the person captured in the video. Local 10 He later confessed to stabbing the shark numerous times in an act of 'revenge' because the predator 'had stolen his fish and was a nuisance,' according to the warrant cited by Local 10. 'I asked Mr. Garrett if he thought that the repeated blows would eventually kill the shark, to which he replied, 'No. It takes a lot more to kill a shark than stabbing it in the head,'' the document stated. He also confessed that he 'did a lot more killing' of sharks with firearms and 'has stabbed sharks and/or killed sharks without harvesting them onto his boat many times in the past.' Authorities condemned the 'egregious' slaying for causing unnecessary harm to the shark. Garrett is being held in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Key West jail facility on a $10,000 bond. His arrangement is set for June 26.

Soldier killed pregnant wife with machete, dismembered her in HI, officials say
A soldier stationed in Hawaii admitted to killing and dismembering his pregnant wife in July 2024, Army officials said. Pfc. Dewayne Arthur Johnson II pleaded guilty during a court-martial in Hawaii to voluntary manslaughter and other charges in connection with the deaths of his wife, Mischa Johnson, and unborn child, according to a June 5 news release from the Army. Pfc. Johnson was ordered by a military judge to serve 23 years behind bars, which is the maximum, officials said. The 29-year-old also is to be reduced in rank and dishonorably discharged, according to officials. Mischa Johnson was six months pregnant when she was reported missing last summer from Oahu's Schofield Barracks, McClatchy News previously reported. In February, the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel referred several charges and specifications against Pfc. Johnson, according to a news release at the time. That meant he was headed toward a military trial. Under his plea agreement, the cavalry scout 'admitted to killing his wife and unborn child in the heat of passion by striking (his wife) in the head with a machete,' officials said. The couple had been fighting, 'and then things escalated to violence,' according to officials. Pfc. Johnson 'also provided specific details of his actions following their deaths, to include dismembering the bodies with a chainsaw and then using his car to transport the remains to a dumpster on Schofield Barracks,' according to officials. The remains 'have never been found and are presumed to have been transported to the island's trash incinerator,' officials said. Pfc. Johnson reported his wife missing about two weeks after he killed her, officials said, 'and (he) even participated with community search parties that spanned the island to look for her.' He was linked to the killing through DNA, blood and other evidence in their home, according to officials. Pfc. Johnson apologized during court proceedings, saying, 'My wife didn't deserve that. She wasn't trash,' Hawaii News Now reported. He also said that, 'I failed as a husband. I failed as a father and I failed as a man. … I'll forever be sorry,' per the outlet. Pfc.
