New Delhi: In Kuwait, nearly 42,000 people's citizenship has been revoked in the past few months. This action was initiated under the leadership of the new Emir, 84-year-old Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who took power in December 2023. The government claims that only genuine Kuwaitis, who have a blood relationship here, will remain in Kuwait. This policy targets those foreigners who have illegally obtained Kuwaiti citizenship.
The women who became citizens here after marrying Kuwaiti men have been the most affected. They have been the main target of this action. After losing their citizenship, these individuals become citizens of no country. They are deprived of rights such as access to government health services, school fees for their children, buying land, or holding shares in companies. Some people's driving licenses have been revoked, and access to their bank accounts has been restricted. The same happened to these women; when they tried to make payments, they realised that their accounts had already been frozen.
The Emir had stated in a speech that among the approximately 5 million people living in Kuwait, only one-third are actual Kuwaitis. Since August, thousands of people's citizenship has been revoked, including 26,000 women who acquired citizenship after marriage. This is an official report from Kuwait, while the actual number is expected to be even higher. The new Emir Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Sabah dissolved the parliament after becoming the Emir in December 2023 and also suspended some parts of the constitution.
In December, an amendment was made to a law under which citizenship can be revoked for reasons such as 'moral corruption, dishonesty, or criticism of wealthy and religious figures.' A Supreme Committee led by the Home Minister is determining whose citizenship is valid.
Every week, the names of those whose citizenship has been revoked are made public. People, out of fear, search these lists for their own or their relatives' names. Kuwait does not allow dual citizenship, so those obtaining Kuwaiti citizenship must renounce their original citizenship.

Piyush Goyal calls for easing of 'complex' EU regulations
PARIS: As India and the European Union move towards a comprehensive free trade agreement - with investment protection and geographical indications likely to be added later - commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal Tuesday called for easing of regulations in the trading bloc and member nations, describing them as "complex". "We have regulations in India too, but the kind of regulations which EU has, and on top of that each member state has, my businesses are just completely foxed. How to go through that maze, but we've got to sort out. We can't just remain foxed. We've got to find solutions," he said. Goyal and EU commissioner for trade and economic security Maros Sefcovic met for a 90 minutes on Monday evening where several issues were thrashed out, amid indications that contentious issues such as dairy and agriculture will be kept out. "We have to take care about, for example, our agriculture, and about some norms that we have in terms of environment, also in terms of sanitary norms, and a deal at the end is a consensus," French foreign trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin said after meeting Goyal, while asserting that both sides have to understand each other's sensitivities. He said that the success of the India-France defence sector can be a role model for other sectors. "I am pretty optimistic about the fact that we can have an agreement in the coming weeks, coming months, because we have to showcase to the world that we do believe in trade, in a freer trade, and not in a trade war," he said. India should open way for developing nations: WTO
PARIS: While acknowledging unprecedented disruption of multilateral trading system, WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Tuesday raised the issue of China-backed investment facilitation. While India is opposing this, Okonjo-Iweala wants New Delhi to support the move. "We spoke about issues of reform, about issues that India is interested in, like agriculture and how India needs to be a leader for MC 14 (next year's ministerial meeting)... India needs to open the way for other developing countries, for example, on investment facilitation for development, we want it to support, because so many developing countries, 90 out of the 126, who are members, would like to move with this. But for agriculture, we also need to listen to what India's issues are and try to be as supportive as possible," she said after a meeting with commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal. India had virtually single-handedly blocked attempts to include investment facilitation as a plurilateral matter under the WTO framework. The comments came ahead of the mini-ministerial meeting of trade ministers later Tuesday. WTO chief said the issue of reform is expected to come up for discussion, at a time when multilateral trading system has been "disrupted in a way it hasn't been before". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Durable Perforated Stainless Steel Sheets Online – Trusted Suppliers Stainless Steel Sheets | Search ADS Search Now Undo "Sometimes I see challenges as opportunities, and I think this is a very good opportunity for WTO members to look at what are those things that work and should be kept and there are many. For example, three quarters of world goods trade is still taking place on WTO terms, on MFN terms and members want to safeguard that," she said. She said that each member will put their ideas on the table, paving the way for discussions at the next year's ministerial meeting. Who is Habiba Soliman? Colorado attack suspect's daughter listed among ‘Best and Brightest' scholarship winners
Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, admitted to detectives that he plotted the Colorado attack for a year and intended to carry it out only after his daughter graduated from high school. An April article in the Colorado Springs Gazette highlighted Soliman's daughter, Habiba Soliman, as one of the recipients of the 'Best and Brightest' senior class scholarship. Habiba Soliman told the newspaper that she spoke little English when she first landed in the US as a sophomore in high school. In addition to improving her English, she enrolled in Thomas Maclaren School, a K–12 charter school, to fulfill her foreign language prerequisite of learning German. In addition, she established an Arabic club. Despite being born in Egypt, Habiba spent 14 years living in Kuwait. She stated that she could not pursue her desire to study in medical school in Kuwait since she was not Kuwaiti. 'Coming to the USA has fundamentally changed me,' Habiba said. 'I learned to adapt to new things even if it was hard. I learned to work under pressure and improve rapidly in a very short amount of time. Most importantly, I came to appreciate that family is the unchanging support.' Also Read: Why has Newark Mayor Ras Baraka sued interim US attorney Alina Habba? Here's what all we know Born in Egypt, Soliman arrived in the US on a tourist visa around the end of 2022. Soliman's visa expired in February 2023, and he stayed in the US after requesting asylum. He resided in Colorado Springs, around 100 miles south of Boulder, with his spouse and kids. Uber confirmed that Soliman was an Uber driver. On May 29, Habiba received her high school diploma with honors. Investigators found that her father drove to Boulder to attack the demonstration three days later. As he was unable to buy a gun, Soliman told investigators he used gasoline, glass bottles, and a backpack sprayer that landscapers frequently use to apply fertilizer or insecticide. During his journey from Colorado Springs, Soliman told detectives he made several stops to obtain bottles for the Molotov bombs, the 87-octane gas to fill them, and flowers to use as disguise so he could 'get as close as possible to the group.'
