Olympic golden girl surfaces from dark hole

Perth Now2 days ago

Swim star Mollie O'Callaghan has emerged from a self-described dark hole to prove she can remain a world-beater.
O'Callaghan has posted the fastest women's 100m freestyle time this year - 52.87 seconds - at Australia's selection trials for the looming world titles.
The 21-year-old who already boasts five Olympic gold medals has battled a post-Paris let-down, injury and illness in a troubled preparation for the trials.
"I have learnt so much mentally this time ... there was a lot of setbacks," O'Callaghan said after her Friday night feat.
"You have to always step in that dark place to get the best out of your self.
"That's what sport is about, it's putting yourself in that hole to see how mentally strong you are - and I've definitely done that this season."
O'Callaghan took five months off after being Australia's most successful athlete at last year's Olympic Games when winning three gold medals plus a silver and bronze.
After the journey of self-discovery to find an identity outside of swimming, she returned to the pool but suffered a knee injury, then illness, ahead of the trials for the world titles in Singapore starting July 27.
"You can't really predict injury, you can't predict sickness, you can't predict any of that," O'Callaghan said.
"You can try and prevent it all you want but sometimes those things just happen and it's just how you look at it.
"There was a lot of tears. But in the long run, I have learnt so much about myself and I wouldn't change a thing."
Her bumpy preparation is something compatriot Zac Stubblety-Cook can relate to after he secured his spot on the Dolphins team for the worlds.
Stubblety-Cook won his 200m breaststroke final in two minutes 09.09 seconds.
The time was well shy of his personal best of 2.05.95, which was a world record when set in 2022 until broken by China's Qin Haiyang a year later.
An Olympic gold medallist in the event at the Tokyo Games of 2021 and silver medallist last year in Paris, Stubblety-Cook was pragmatic about his latest performance.
"Last year, I had a lot of time off and a lot of time to reflect and see where I was at - and make sure I really wanted to commit to the next four years," he said.
"And it's year one out of four so we're taking it much more as a four-year approach (to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics)."
In the men's 200m backstroke, Josh Edwards-Smith (1:56.94) and Brad Woodward (1:57.14) earnt selection for the worlds.
In the women's 200m breaststroke, Ella Ramsay (2:23.92) and Tara Kinder (2:24.61) also made the team.
And Sam Short's return to form continued with victory in the men's 1500m freestyle - he touched in 14:52.43, just 0.56 seconds ahead of fellow 21-year-old Ben Goedemans.

Australian teen Olympian Chloe Covell reveals iconic new role

Chloe Covell has had the kind of sporting career most people can only dream of. She's competed in the Olympics for Australia, she's won gold at the X Games and is considered one of the greatest street-style skateboarders currently in the sport. And now, she has just been made a playable character in the remake of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater + video game, a release which brings two of the most iconic sports games to modern consoles for the very first time. At just 15 years old, she has just started her senior year of high school. Her dad (former NRL player Luke Covell) was a teenager when the original version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 released in October 2001. The Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games were revolutionary when they first came out, changing world wide perceptions of skateboarding, and bringing attention to the sport. It made Tony Hawk a household name, and made kids in Australia aware of other legendary skaters through the roster of real life athletes they could play as in the video game. Including Covell in the updated game was a no-brainer for the developers. In fact, she was hand-picked for inclusion by none other than Tony Hawk himself. At a recent event in Los Angeles, Hawk exclusively told 'I saw her skate X Games before she qualified for the Olympics. I remember her trick selection, her sense of confidence at a young age, and I was like, 'she's got to be in it'.' At the same event, Rodney Mullen, a man who invented many of the most famous modern skateboarding tricks including the ollie, kickflip, heelflip and impossible, and is considered the 'Godfather of freestyle skating' was similarly impressed by Covell's skill. 'Oh my God. Blows my mind to see that much talent coming in.' However, even with all the praise and accolades she's getting, Covell remains as laid back and down to earth as you'd expect from a skateboarder. 'That they [Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen] were even just speaking about me is pretty crazy, because they're really good skaters, and really inspirational to me' For Covell, the experience of having her head scanned into the game was a logistically challenging one, because of the timing.' I had to go to Activision, and it was during school time, so I had to have a tutor. But it was all really fun.' While many people would get choice paralysis when picking an outfit to be immortalised in a video game that will be played by people all over the world (the remake of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 sold one million copies in the first two weeks of release Covell found the process easy. 'I just picked my favourite outfit at the time.' While most of her friends had never heard of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games before because 'they're not skaters', Covell's friends are supportive. 'They think it's pretty cool and all of them said they're gonna get it and play it as me as the character, so that will be pretty funny.' As for Covell, she admits that her skating skills are better in the real world than the digital one, but she plans on splitting her play time between all the playable skaters in the video game. 'There are lots of legendary skaters on there, but it would also be fun to play as myself.' Back when the original games came out, there weren't many female skaters included, nor were there many female skaters at the parks. According to Covell, the sport is now seeing more of a gender balance, with so many new athletes picking up a board. '[The skating scene in Australia] is really good. Since the Olympics, there's been so many more young kids getting into it, especially girls,' she said. 'It's really amazing to see because even way before I started skating, there was like, no girls at the skate park and when I started skating, sometimes there were girls, and now there's always girls in the skate park.' She puts this shift down to Skateboarding's inclusion in the Olympics. 'I feel like it was, mostly the Olympics because there's a girls division, so I feel like the girls see it and they think it's cool, so they start trying.' Now that she's won the X Games, represented her country and been included in the most influential skateboarding video game series of all time, Covell has a new goal on the horizon: perfecting her favourite trick. 'My go to trick that I would usually do, that I'm still trying to work on to get bigger and better at, is switch kick flips down really big steps. I can do them, but I just want to be consistent.' Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 will be available in stores from the 11th of July.

Kookaburras down India 3-2 to go fourth in Pro League

The Kookaburras have surged to fourth on the FIH Pro League standings, after a clinical, high-pressure 3-2 defeat of India to remain unbeaten as they continue their FIH Pro League title defence in Europe. Less than 24 hours after their dramatic come-from-behind win over the same foes, the Kookaburras unleashed more firepower in Antwerp, as prolific goalscorer Blake Govers marked his return to international competition for the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. It took the NSW striker just five minutes to find the back of the net with a trademark rocketing strike to score his 155th goal in 168 appearances. "It's awesome to be back. The boys got around me and to get that first clutch, first goal was pretty nice," Govers said. "I would've liked to have gotten a few more. But it's been a disjointed year and it's just good to be back playing. "Everything's behind me, the body's feeling a hundred percent, and I'm looking forward to the rest of this tournament." Reeling from five consecutive FIH Pro League defeats, India opened with fury through Sanjay, who struck early from a penalty corner to claim a 1-0 lead inside three minutes. But the Kookaburras answered immediately, with Tim Brand deftly deflecting a sublime Ky Willott strike before Govers' solo effort flipped the match. After three goals in three minutes, Australia were in full control with a 2-1 lead, applying relentless first-half pressure, and earning repeated penalty corners, which soon led to their third goal. Showing their versatility at the penalty corner, Victoria's Cooper Burns rifled home a strike to score his fourth goal in just 10 international outings, since his debut in February earlier this year. India clawed a goal back in the third quarter through Dilpreet Singh, sparking hopes of a comeback. But despite a late surge and even pulling their goalkeeper in a final desperate push, they couldn't find the equaliser. "We're really pleased with that, it was an intense match, and that's what we expect in a game against India, it's always back and forth, and we've played them a lot over the last few years," Player of the Match Nathan Ephraums told 7plus. The Kookaburras' European campaign has gained serious momentum. They sit in fourth on the FIH Pro League standings with 18 points, just one point behind third-placed Belgium.

Markstedt gave birth to their son, Koby, in 2024, 12 months after their enagement. Earlier, Carpenter was granted personal leave from the past Matildas window to prepare for her wedding. 'I choose you, I will always choose you,' Carpenter wrote alongside the two images. Carpenter and van Donk wore traditional white dresses with Carpenter having a lengthy vail. Carpenter and van de Donk met while playing for French side Olympique Lyonnais. The Aussie gun joined the club in 2020 with the Dutch midfielder joining the following the year. They began a couple in 2022 before announcing their engagement early last year. Olympique Lyonnais continued their domination of the French league, winning their fourth straight title and 18th from the past 19 years.
