‘This is on': Ex-Swans boss John Longmire linked to bombshell AFL coaching comeback

News.com.au29-04-2025

There have reportedly been 'high-level discussions' regarding a return to senior coaching for Sydney premiership mentor John Longmire.
The 54-year-old stepped down as Swans coach following last year's grand final loss after 14 fruitful years in the top job, having guided the Bloods to a premiership and five grand final appearances.
Now an executive director of club performance at Sydney, Longmire led the club to 10 campaigns of 14-plus wins and owns a career 63 per cent winning clip.

And while he appears to be enjoying his time out of the coaching game, including making weekly appearances on Fox Footy's AFL 360, Longmire remains a wanted man in the footy coaching landscape.
'There (are) clubs looking at this situation very closely, that John Longmire is attainable,' journalist Sam McClure told Nine's Footy Classified.
'There's the Tasmania project, which is going to be a long-term project — we know that, no matter if and when they come in — you've got sides like Carlton and Melbourne, who are holding off the vultures at the moment, given recent form.
'You've got his old side, North Melbourne, who have won 16 games in the past five years and are second-last on the ladder. His record is unbelievable.'
Across 14 seasons, Longmire astonishingly took the Swans to the finals in 12 of them.
'There are teams that would give their left arms for that sort of record … I know for a fact at least one club has had high-level discussions around his availability,' McClure revealed.
'This is on, now. There is a race that is beginning for John Longmire. And I know that there are some teams that are of the opinion that usually the older premiership coaches — once you get them back in — don't go as well, and there's a history of that.
'(But) he's going to have offers. He's going to have extreme interest (from clubs).
'I'm not going to say which club it is, but I think (that information) will come to fruition later in the year, and I don't think it's just going to be one club that is looking at John Longmire.'
The league's incoming 19th club, the Tasmania Devils, are in need of a senior coach, and Longmire earlier this month didn't deny an eventual return to an AFL hot seat when posed the question by The Age's Vince Rugari.

Tom Harley, Geelong premiership captain, appointed AFL chief operating officer

The AFL has poached Sydney administrator Tom Harley as its next chief operating officer in a bid to bolster the leadership around chief executive Andrew Dillon. Sydney chief executive Harley, who looms as the AFL's next chief, will stay at the Swans until at least the end of the season before joining the league as Dillon's second-in-command in October. It follows Brisbane boss Greg Swann joining as football performance executive, as the league tries to address a feeling of disconnect between the clubs and Dillon and his football operations boss, Laura Kane. Harley's portfolio includes AFL operations, integrity and security and dealings with the clubs, including funding, the upcoming collective bargaining agreement and the salary and soft caps. "When we first announced the COO position, we were clear — this was about bringing strong club experience to the AFL's leadership. Tom Harley is the right person to do exactly that," Dillon said in a statement. "Tom has a deep understanding of the game — from his time as a two-time premiership captain, to leading AFL NSW/ACT, to steering the Swans through a period of significant on- and off-field growth. "His ability to lead people, build trust and drive long-term outcomes is exactly what we need at this moment in our journey and I am thrilled he is joining our executive leadership team." Former Geelong captain Harley has been Sydney CEO since 2019, after joining the club as its football boss in 2014, and believed the time was right to move to the AFL. "I'm deeply passionate about our sport and committed to doing whatever I can to support its continued growth," he said. "The Sydney Swans has been my home for many years now, and I'm incredibly proud of everything the club has achieved along the way. It leaves Sydney, which over the off-season had to manage the departure of coach John Longmire and a handover to Dean Cox, in a search for their next CEO. "On behalf of everyone at the Swans, I want to thank Tom for more than a decade of service. He will leave our club in the strongest off-field position in its history and with solid foundations for future success," Swans chairman Andrew Pridham said. "Tom leaves the club with our absolute blessing as we know what he is capable of and know that he can make an enormous contribution at AFL level. "Indeed, we are excited to see him continue to impact the growth of our game." AAP

Tom Harley becomes second club CEO to join new-look AFL executive

Bringing 'club experience' into the AFL was at the core of the league's decision to appoint Sydney chief executive and former Geelong captain Tom Harley the new chief operating officer. Harley, a two-time Geelong premiership captain, is the second club chief executive to join the league's new-look executive after Brisbane Lions boss Gregg Swann was added to AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon's staff. Dillon said the appointment of a COO, his No.2, would help drive the AFL's bold ambitions for growth. 'When we first announced the COO position, we were clear – this was about bringing strong club experience to the AFL's leadership. Tom Harley is the right person to do exactly that.' Dillon said. 'Tom has a deep understanding of the game – from his time as a two-time premiership captain, to leading AFL NSW/ACT, to steering the Swans through a period of significant on- and off-field growth. His ability to lead people, build trust, and drive long-term outcomes is exactly what we need at this moment in our journey and I am thrilled he is joining our executive leadership team.' As COO, Harley will lead the execution of the AFL's strategic and growth plans, drive industry-wide alignment and overseeing major portfolios, including club funding, player CBA, the salary cap and competition structure. Harley said it was a tough decision to leave the Swans, who will conduct a search for his replacement. 'Football has been so good to me, and I have always seen my involvement as a privilege. I'm deeply passionate about our sport and committed to doing whatever I can to support its continued growth,' he said. 'The Sydney Swans has been my home for many years now, and I'm incredibly proud of everything the club has achieved along the way. While wins and losses will always matter, we've never lost sight of our broader purpose – to enrich lives and bring joy to our community. I truly believe we've made a meaningful impact in that space, and I'm confident the club will continue to do so into the future. 'I'm energised by the challenge ahead and excited to keep working to grow our great game.'

Brisbane Broncos submit bold new logo for trademark

The Brisbane Broncos appear to be considering a rebrand for the first time in nearly 25 years. A newly designed, simplistic horse head logo has been quietly submitted to IP Australia for trademark protection. While the trademark image is black and white, it's expected any final version would draw on the club's traditional maroon, white, and gold colour scheme. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. A club spokesperson confirmed the filing but stopped short of revealing whether the logo would appear on next season's jerseys. 'A newly created corporate design was recently submitted to IP Australia,' she said. 'The design has not been approved, accepted or registered at this point.' The new design follows a global trend of cutting back on detail to favour bold colours and a clean silhouette. In the 20th century, NRL logos were generally bold and cartoonish, but it appears the corporate machines behind Australia's biggest clubs are pushing for a new sense of relevancy. Logo changes in the NRL aren't new. Clubs like the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers have reworked their visual identity in recent decades, often seeking to modernise their image while maintaining ties to tradition. Associate Professor Sheranne Fairley from the University of Queensland said the Broncos' relatively modern history makes it more flexible than older clubs like Carlton. Founded in 1988, the Broncos aren't as constrained by tradition, though changes still carry weight with fans,' she told Nine Newspapers. She speculated the stripe in the new logo might represent the Brisbane River, a nod to the city's identity as 'the river city.' The current Broncos logo was first adopted in 2000 and later refined in 2006. It replaced the club's original 1988 crest, which also featured a stylised horse's head. The Broncos have not been afraid to mix things up in recent years and the team's radical shift to a black jersey for their win over the Gold Coast Titans. he black jerseys along with black shorts and black socks are being worn to make a powerful statement for the club's dedicated Mental Health Round. The jersey was designed in collaboration with Broncos Charity Partner, Black Dog Institute, with the club to make a major donation from the proceeds of the jersey to the organisation.
