Commandos plan final assault on Maoist top guns in Abujmarh

1 2 Nagpur: Maharashtra's elite C-60 commandos are gearing up for a final assault on Abujmarh, tottering headquarters of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, buoyed by CM Devendra Fadnavis's historic visit to the area on Friday. In Odisha, police have intensified searches in Charmal forests of Sambalpur after reports about the influx of Maoists pushed out by security forces' offensives in neighbouring Chhattisgarh. The spotlight, though, remains on Abujmarh, where Operation Clean-up aims to decimate the last vestiges of the military wing of the five-decade old Maoist movement in Maharashtra's eastern flank, say top sources in the state's anti-Naxalite apparatus. A top guerrilla on the radar is central committee member Mallojula Venugopal Reddy, alias Bhupathi or Sonu. Intelligence inputs suggested he was holed up deep inside the booby-trapped forested hills of Abujmarh and spotted a few km off Kawande -- the hamlet CM Fadnavis visited two days ago. Although Bhupathi had appealed to the Centre for a ceasefire and despite his wife Tarakka surrendering a year ago, the veteran may opt to fight till his last breath. Apart from the uncertain terrain, the battle-hardened C60 commandos are also concerned about rains which would make the hills unapproachable with numerous overflowing rivulets and nullahs. Other Maoists on the hit list are Kadari Satyanarayana Reddy alias Kosa, Madvi Hidma, Devuji alias Devji and CPI (Maoist) general secretary Ganapathy. They are frequently shifting bases in Abujmarh and in the three-state junction of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Another top leader, Prabhakar, head of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, is also a challenge for the forces. Kosa, a veteran revolutionary, and Bhupathi are considered the ideological fountainhead and brother of the late Maoist leader Mallojula Koteswara Rao (Kishenji). Intelligence reports suggest the duo is desperately changing locations to evade capture, moving through the treacherous terrain of Abujmarh, a region known for its inaccessibility and strategic importance to the Maoists. Sources claimed the youngest among the last few politburo members, Hidma, heading "Battalion One" in Chhattisgarh, is likely to have suffered injuries in gun battles with forces last month and has gone underground. "All the top Telugu leaders of the Central Committee and Politburo are 60 years and above, which has made them unsuitable for this challenge," said a top cop. Pressure on top cadres intensified after 12 senior Maoists surrendered to Gadchiroli police on Friday, a significant setback for the outfit. The surrendered cadres, reportedly from the Maad area, are believed to have provided critical intelligence about the movements of Kosa and Bhupathi. In Odisha's Sambalpur, intelligence inputs suggested suspicious movement of some rebels from Chhattisgarh, prompting the searches. "It is not fully confirmed if the rebels dispersed and are trying to shift their bases. Considering their dwindling numbers in Odisha, it is not likely that they will mount offensive action against forces," said a senior police officer. Earlier, DGP Y B Khurania said Odisha police are working hard to nip Left-wing extremism in the bud, reiterating the police effort to meet the Centre's target of eliminating LWE violence by March 2026.

Cops intensify search for Maoists in Odisha forests

1 2 Bhubaneswar: The recent intensified operations against Maoists in Chhattisgarh has reportedly forced them to disperse and seek refuge in adjacent forest areas, police officials said. Acting on intelligence reports, the special operation group (SOG) and district voluntary force (DVF) launched search operations in Charmal forests of Sambalpur district. Intelligence reports suggest that there was suspicious movement of some rebels from Chhattisgarh, who took shelter in these forests, prompting swift action from security forces. "It is an area domination exercise that is being carried out as part of ongoing offensive, search, and combing operations in Maoist-dominated areas in the state. It is not fully confirmed if the rebels dispersed and are trying to shift their bases. Considering their dwindling numbers in Odisha, it is not likely that they will have any sort of offensive action against security forces," said a senior police officer privy to the ongoing operations. In Oct last year, a senior Maoist cadre was killed in a combing operation launched by SOG in Kandhamal district. Since then, no Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) Maoist was killed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The combing was launched at Budanai reserve forest under Baliguda police limits. Earlier, DGP Y B Khurania said Odisha police are working hard to nip Left-wing extremism in the bud, reiterating the police effort to meet the Centre's target of eliminating LWE violence by March 2026. Nearly four years after Boudh was declared Maoist-free, the Centre again in March included it in LWE-affected list and treated it as a security related expenditure (SRE) district. Boudh, Koraput and Bargarh have been categorised as districts of legacy and thrust. Nuapada and Malkangiri districts are treated as districts of concern while Kalahandi and Kandhamal as most affected district. Police officers said thrust districts are those, where there is scope for expanding Maoist activities and hence more focus and planning are required to carry out anti-Maoist operations as well as sensitising people.

Five more Maoists killed in op in which top guns Sudhakar & Bhaskar were eliminated

Raipur: Seven Maoists – including central committee member Sudhakar and another top commander, Bhaskar – have been killed in an operation that is on in Indravati National Park area of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, Bastar police said on Saturday. Sudhakar, the ideological chief of Maoists, was gunned down on Thursday and Bhaskar, a Telangana State Committee Member, on Friday. Skirmishes continued all night and on Saturday, the bodies of five more cadres were found. Two of them are women. Police are trying to identify them. Other high-level Maoist operatives, including Telangana State Committee's press in-charge Bandi Prakash, have been spotted in the encounter zone. With this operation, sources say, security forces have foiled a crucial Maoist attempt to coordinate their activities in the region following the encounter killing of CPI(Maoist) general secretary Basavaraju. Security forces have been battling not only insurgents' bullets and treacherous hilly terrain, but also snakes and other threats in the wild as the operation continues deep inside the jungles. Bastar range IG P Sundarraj announced the elimination of 7 Maoists and said that a large cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, has been seized from the encounter zones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "Search operations and area domination exercises continue in the dense forest terrain to flush out any remaining insurgents and ensure complete control of the region," Sundarraj said. "A few personnel sustained snake bites and bee stings and suffered severe dehydration but the forces kept up the momentum. All injured personnel are currently in stable condition and receiving medical care," Sundarraj said. High-intensity encounters were spread across three consecutive days — June 5-7. The encounter in which Bashar was killed was the most fierce, said police sources. On Thursday, Sundarraj had said that the operation was launched after precise inputs on the location of some top Maoist commanders. District Reserve Guards, Special Task Force and CRPF's CoBRA commandos moved out to intercept the group on Wednesday night. They went on foot to maintain stealth and took the Maoists completely by surprise the next morning. As the insurgents scattered, the forces also spread out and running gunbattles broke out across a large swathe of the jungle. The operation, still underway, is one of the most significant missions in the red corridor in recent years, said an officer, adding that they are hopeful of more success. Sudhakar, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was in charge of the Maoists' Revolutionary Political School and was in the insurgent outfit for nearly four decades. He was the third central committee member to be killed in Bastar this year after Jai Ram alias Chalpathy on Jan 21 and Basavaraju on May 21.
