'If you go to the moon, there'd be someone asking, how are Wrexham doing?'
Mickey Thomas says he has never seen football club owners boasting a better relationship with fans than Wrexham's Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.Wrexham will play in English football's second tier next season for the first time in 43 years after clinching second spot in League One last weekend.The Dragons have become the first club in the history of England's top five divisions to secure three straight promotions.Their spectacular run has come following the takeover of the club by Reynolds and McElhenney in 2021, when they were a non-league side."What they have done is unique - it's incredible," Wrexham legend Thomas told this week's Feast of Football podcast."The transformation from the National League to where they are now is massive and they have done it in the right way."I have never seen owners of a football club have the association they have with the players but more so with the fans. The connection is unreal."Former Manchester United player Thomas, 70, made his name at Wrexham in the 1970s before returning to the club at the back-end of his career, when he famously scored a spectacular free-kick in a shock FA Cup victory over Arsenal.
The ex-Wales international (above) had not met Reynolds and McElhenney until last Saturday's promotion-clinching win over Charlton, when he was invited to the owners' box and then asked to celebrate on the pitch alongside them afterwards."I don't think anyone can really believe what's happened to the football club," Thomas added."Everyone wants to go and watch Wrexham. You can't get a ticket these days."It's not just Wrexham, it's globally. They have captured the whole universe haven't they? I am sure if you go to the moon, there'd be someone there asking 'how are Wrexham doing?'."I didn't see this happening. But what they have done is they have got the right man in charge in Phil Parkinson and the recruitment has been second to none."As Wrexham prepare to compete with some heavyweight clubs in the Championship next season, Thomas says another promotion is not inconceivable."We know they will do well to finish halfway in the Championship or whatever, but you wouldn't put it past them, that they could get automatic promotion next year," he said."You might laugh at that, but you never know with these two guys, everything they touch turns to gold."

Chelsea will not revisit a deal for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan if the move is not completed before Tuesday's transfer deadline. The Blues have been in negotiations with the Serie A giants for the French stopper as they haggle over a transfer fee. An opening offer of €15million (£12.6m) was rejected by Milan and it is believed that a deal could be struck for just €18m (£15m), meeting in the middle as the Italians value him at €25m (£21m). In the grand scheme of football transfer fees it seems like a tiny hurdle to overcome, but a deal is proving more difficult than you might think. Sky Sports report that negotiations have been continuing throughout Monday and an agreement has not been reached. The report states that unless a transfer has been finalised by 7pm on Tuesday June 10 then Chelsea will walk away from a deal. Chelsea offered one of Djordje Petrovic or Kepa Arrizabalaga to Milan in a proposed swap deal for Maignan, but the Rossoneri have no interest in either goalkeeper, favouring a cash-only agreement. The 32-cap France international is out of contract at the San Siro in 2026 and could leave on a free transfer next summer. The transfer window closing on Tuesday evening is unusual and has been brought in to allow clubs participating in the Club World Cup to bring in players before it starts. There are now two transfer windows this summer, with the first running from June 1-10 before the Club World Cup starts on June 15. There is then a second window which runs from June 16 till September 1. The Sky Sports report states that the Maignan deal is different to the one that Chelsea are pursuing for Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens in that Tuesday's deadline is not a final one. More Trending Discussions are ongoing over a move for the English winger and the Blues are happy to revisit them after the first transfer window closes if the transfer is not done in time. Dortmund turned down an initial bid worth €35m (£29.5m) for the 20-year-old and want a significantly bigger offer, closer to €50-60m (£42-50m). Much like with Maignan, it is just the transfer fee that is the issue, with Gittens keen on the switch to west London. Personal terms have been agreed between Chelsea and the winger, but club-to-club negotiations have some way to go. Nick Morgan living the dream with Stern John in St Lucia
The 44-year-old from St Julians has a management CV that features a raft of Gwent clubs but now he is part of St Lucia's set-up, working as an assistant for former Premier League striker Stern John. The 'Piton Boyz' will go up against Advocaat's Curacao, who boast players from the Netherlands' Eredivisie, in the early hours of Saturday UK time and then face Barbados on Tuesday night. Morgan has had the job since the autumn of 2024 after accepting an invite from John, who played in England for Nottingham Forest, Birmingham, Coventry, Derby, Sunderland, Southampton, Bristol City and Crystal Palace. The pair met on a Football Association of Wales A licence course and that led to the Welshman jumping at a chance to experience international football. Morgan initially did that while managing Westfields in Hellenic League Premier Division but he has now left the Hereford club and will devote more of his time to St Lucia, alongside his full-time job as a project manager with energy company SSE. 'I'll go and watch those who have already committed to us but also work on a big list of those who maybe could in the future. 'Stern came over in May and we went to watch some players because we have seven professionals in the English leagues – the likes of Terell Thomas at Carlisle, Arkell Jude-Boyd at Cheltenham, Chris Forino-Joseph at Bolton.' St Lucia are 165 in FIFA's rankings and the World Cup is not a realistic aim but they did have a good crack at qualification for this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. They finished second to Curacao in the group stages, that after stunning Advocaat's side 2-1 in their opener. The big aim is to make progress as a nation with Morgan relishing the chance to be part of a professional football environment again. He did that with Newport County AFC under good friend Michael Flynn in 2017/18 – a season that featured the FA Cup games against Tottenham at Rodney Parade and Wembley – but it was a stretch. 'I remember that we had Lincoln away on a Tuesday night and I had to be in Exeter for work at 8am. We got back to the training ground at 3am,' said Morgan, who has a wife Lucy and children Cian and Kayleigh. 'I was committed to that season but it was tough, I've been offered opportunities in full-time football but, with the level that I would have to go in at, I couldn't risk my job in the outside.' Morgan has been part of the set-ups at Newport Corinthians, Newport YMCA, Chepstow, Monmouth, Cwmbran Celtic and Abergavenny, plus he also worked with the Exiles' academy before stepping up to help with the first team. 'I've been in semi-professional football for the last 15 years since I stopped playing and it's always been something running alongside my job, working with some very good Welsh teams before going over to England,' he said. 'Now I've got this opportunity to go over to the Caribbean and represent a country, and I love the togetherness that we have as a squad and staff. 'This gives me the chance to get that experience of a professional football environment with the camps three or four times a year. I love it.'
