Glasgow apprentices hail sport programme as "life-changing"
The Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport (PEPASS) team, which includes the city's active schools coordinators, has been running a Modern Apprenticeship programme for six years.
Elise McKee, a former pupil of St Andrew's Secondary in Carntyne, said: 'I love dancing and gymnastics when I was really young, but it was our active schools co-ordinator Julie who really inspired me to think about sport as a career.
'The Modern Apprenticeship has been life-changing and given me a clear pathway into what I want to do. I'm now going to do an HND in sport coaching and development at college and hopefully eventually become an active schools co-ordinator myself.'

Elise's leadership in dance and gymnastics has helped encourage many younger girls to take part in major events.
Jack McBride, who attended Castlemilk High, has had a huge impact on confidence and participation in Additional Support Needs schools.
He said: 'I didn't know what I wanted to do when I left school, but the Modern Apprenticeship has been brilliant, I really love it.'
Jack, who is care experienced and has kinship care for his younger brother, added: 'Taking classes in boccia for pupils with additional support needs has been my favourite aspect of the whole programme, and I have learned a lot.'
The two apprentices spoke about their experiences at Glasgow City Council's recent education committee meeting.
Councillor Christina Cannon, Glasgow City Council's education convener said: 'It was brilliant to hear from Elise and Jack about all the opportunities they have experienced during their apprenticeship.
'They were so confident about the difference it has made in their lives and how it has given them the skills to apply for courses and the next stage of their career.'
Applications for this year's PEPASS Modern Apprenticeship programme are open until May 25.

Coleen Rooney has said Unicef support for Ukrainian families has been a 'lifeline' that is 'changing lives'. The media personality recently travelled to Poland with Unicef to see how Soccer Aid donations have directly supported Ukrainian families who were forced to flee their homes. The 39-year-old said she could not 'imagine' what Ukrainian refugee families must be going through, emphasising how important it is to stand with them. She said: 'I can relate to being a mum and the first thing (you would do) in that situation is to get out of danger, to make sure that the kids are OK and we can find somewhere. 'I couldn't imagine what was going through their heads… the emotions.' While in Krakow she visited the Spilno Hub, which helps families find accommodation and offers access to a range of services such as psychosocial support and legal assistance. The Unicef-run centre has helped people such as Yuliia Karpenko, her sister Olisia and Yuliia's four-year-old daughter Anastasiia 'Nastia' who were forced to flee Ukraine with just one bag on an evacuation train. She said: 'Hearing about the lasting effect the war in Ukraine has had on Yuliia and her family will stay with me for a long time. 'Her determination to create a safe and supportive community for her family in Poland really shone through. 'Thanks to Unicef, she's been able to meet other mums, learn Polish and find work in a kitchen. 'And her daughter, Nastia, has been able to make friends with other children and spend time playing, just as any four-year-old should. 'It was a privilege meeting Yuliia and her family and to see how money raised by Soccer Aid for Unicef really is changing lives. 'Leaving their home and not knowing when they'll be able to return was so hard for them. 'But spending time at the Spilno Hub has helped them to feel safe. 'It supports families who've fled the war in Ukraine in so many ways. 'It's a very special place.' During the trip, Rooney visited the Education Rehabilitation Centre, a specialist school funded by the children's organisation which supports young people with disabilities. There she met a young autistic boy, Murat, who could not talk when they first left Ukraine and has since been able to say a few words. She said: 'It's such a calming place and the teachers there are so supportive and caring. 'Kateryna (Murat's mother) told me that the changes she's seen in Murat have been incredible. 'When they left Ukraine he wasn't able to talk but he's now started to say some words and can communicate with other children too. 'She said that when they arrived in Poland she felt hopeless but, thanks to Unicef, she can now see a future there for them.' Donations made to Soccer Aid for Unicef will be doubled this year up to £5 million thanks to the Children's Investment Fund Foundation. Rooney said: 'As a mum myself, I couldn't help but think of my own boys when I met children like Nastia and Murat. 'Seeing them smile and play despite everything they've been through was incredibly moving. 'Hearing their stories really reminded me how important it is that we stand with families who've been through so much, every child deserves a safe space to play – as a parent this is all you want for your child.' Grealish has previously shown he can be hugely effective and as Newcastle balance multiple competitions, his nous could be very useful. His City's treble-winning season the ex-Villa man was an influential figure as he played out wide - and prior to that was a key man at Villa Park. Pep Guardiola has admitted that Grealish needs regular minutes despite overlooking him on numerous occasions. He said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. 'It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays it will be fine and he will fight like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today.' Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season." Ryan Lochte breaks silence on divorce from Playboy wife Kayla with emotional message
US Olympic icon Ryan Lochte has spoken out on Instagram over the influx of support he has received after it emerged he is getting divorced from his wife, Kayla Reid. The couple announced the news on Wednesday and speaking on social media, the 12-time Olympic medalist said it was 'rough' going public with the split. 'I just want to say thank you to everyone that wrote a message, reached out to me — just open arms,' he said in an Instagram video. 'It means a lot to me. Yesterday was a rough day for me, but, like always in life, you've got to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward, so, that's what I'm doing.' The 40-year-old Lochte said he had been sent gifts by his 'second family', such as candy and a card. 'Thank you guys, I love you guys,' he added. The couple have three kids together. 'I'm deeply grateful for the life we've built together and especially for the love we share for our three children. 'Although this decision hasn't been easy, I believe it's the right step toward peace and well-being for us both. I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately.' The couple met in 2016 before getting engaged that same year in the fall. Lochte was also thrust into controversy during the 2016 Rio Games, after he claimed that he and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint after a night out. It was later revealed that the armed men were actually security guards and several details of Lochte's story proved to be fabricated. He was ultimately charged with submitting a false report to police, but charges were later dismissed after he apologized.
