Charges Imminent In Sabah Corruption Probe
BANGI, June 12 (Bernama) -- Certain individuals will be charged soon in connection with a corruption scandal allegedly linked to Sabah state assemblymen, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
"I will announce it in a very short time; one or two will be charged in court," he told reporters after attending the 2nd MACC Accredited Law Enforcement Programme Convocation here today.
The case relates to several viral video recordings of alleged conversations between some individuals and Sabah lawmakers regarding mineral licensing in the state.

The three men, aged between 25 and 29, were arrested at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, on May 27 after a check of six luggage pieces belonging to them revealed 103 plastic packages containing 86 kg of marijuana. Razarudin said the suspects were believed to be planning to board a Thai Airways flight to Germany to deliver the drugs. The trio is currently held in Vientiane's Phontong Prison. "Checks with the Malaysian Immigration Department revealed that they departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 22. However, information from Thai authorities indicates there is no record of their entry into or exit from Thailand," he said. He added that the authorities will continue to cooperate with foreign enforcement agencies to identify the syndicate networks that may be involved, in addition to ensuring consular protection for the three Malaysians involved. Meanwhile, regarding the preliminary report on the accident involving Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak, on May 13, Razarudin said a committee had been formed to review several recommendations aimed at enhancing the safety features of vehicles used by personnel on duty. He added that these include safer seating arrangements and the necessity to fully separate the passenger and cargo compartments, particularly during travel to operational sites rather than during operations themselves. "Further discussions on safety standards and transport protocols are expected in the next meeting, with an emphasis on stringent guidelines and utilisation of vehicles that comply with the latest safety specifications," he said.- Bernama

Facebook generated up to US$20bil in Asean ad revenue in 2024, RM2.5bil from Malaysia alone, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA: Social media platform Facebook is estimated to have generated between US$15bil to US$20bil (RM63.7bil-RM84.9bil) in online advertising revenue in the Asean region in 2024, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said in Malaysia alone, Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5bil. He said the overall figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the Asean region. "This is the problem we face – many of the ads they display are scams promoting fake investments or so-called magical products on sale at very low prices – there's no control. "Just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (e-cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups," he said during the ministry's monthly assembly on Thursday (June 12). Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier in 2025. "They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas," he said. On Jan 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users and strengthening regulatory oversight of Internet messaging service providers and social media platforms. The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act 2024 in December, which will be enforced soon. "With the enforcement of the Act, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply. Highway funds misuse: MACC seizes luxury items worth RM16m
THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized another RM16 million worth of luxury items linked to the misuse of sukuk funds for the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a concession holder with the title of Tan Sri yesterday. The MACC said the seizure at the individual's residence in Bandar Tasik Selatan, Cheras included 84 luxury bags worth about RM3 million, 11 branded watches (about RM1 million), gold bars, coins and statues (about RM3 million), diamonds and jewellery (about RM4 million). 'A luxury casino equipment set estimated to be worth RM150,000 was also seized,' the commission said in a statement, adding that a secret vault that stored weapons and ammunition was discovered but the weapons were not seized as they were registered under the security company the individual owned. An Anti Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) conducted the search of the individual's residence as he was suspected to be keeping weapons in the vault. 'The MACC received information that there was a vault storing valuables, including weapons, linked to the case in his residence. 'The presence of the ACTS team was to ensure safety and to escort officers and seized items back to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya,' the commission added. Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the search and seizure and did not deny the possibility that there would be other seizures linked to the case. He said that the process of taking the individual's statement had to be postponed to a later date due to health factors.
