Sedibeng Mayor Lerato Maloka found unharmed after being abducted

The abduction of the mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality, Lerato Maloka, has been linked by sources to her media briefing where she announced that she requested the Gauteng provincial government to institute an investigation into corruption in the municipality.
Maloka and her driver were hijacked and kidnapped from Alberton on Friday and both were found unharmed and reunited with their families on Saturday night, police confirmed.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the investigations were ongoing and a manhunt for the suspects is underway.
Sources claimed a link between the abduction to a media briefing held by Maloka last week, where she announced that has written to the Gauteng MEC for Local Government, Jacob Mamabolo, and requested a full investigation into corruption at the municipality.
She wants the investigation to focus on senior municipal officials, who she claims have paid themselves approximately one million rand from the council coffers.
She also made claims of irregular appointments even though the municipality does not have money and officials lying to the council about senior manager appointments.
Maloka said she has also written to the Public Protector asking for help.
She said her efforts to make the municipality follow the law and serve the people properly have been ignored.
A criminal complaint was recently laid against Maloka, alleging that she stole the mayoral chain after a break-in at her office.
Maloka denied the allegations, saying she was a victim of lies and harassment because she was trying to clean up the municipality.
The Sedibeng mayoral chain, valued at R465,000, mysteriously disappeared after the State of the District Address on June 23, 2023, but the case of theft was not opened until November 2023.
The allegations against Maloka also included improper use of municipal resources such as taking expensive trips using municipal money, including a costly flight to support an employee at a funeral.
The allegations resulted in the mayor's removal from office by a Council Vote of No Confidence in January 2025, but she was re-elected three weeks later.
'It cannot be that the mayor is exposing corruption and announcing her intention to investigate and the next thing she is hijacked and kidnapped. This is very suspicious,' said a source, adding that this could be influenced by those who want to see her out of the office.
Several efforts to get a comment from Maloka were unsuccessful.
The municipality's spokesperson, Nomvula Khalo, confimed that Maloka had written a letter to Mamabolo, but said he was unaware of the content of the communication.
Mamabolo's spokesperson Theo Nkonki said the matter should be addressed with the police, adding the department was not in a position to comment.
Sedibeng ANC spokesperson, Velile Mkhontwana, did not respond to messages and calls.
Meanwhile, the DA has announced that the council has resolved to write to Mamabolo and request the suspension of Maloka.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party said Maloka had given a press interview behind closed doors during council proceedings, which included debate to determined her future in the mayoral chair.

Police close probe into missing R465k Sedibeng mayoral chain
Gauteng police have confirmed that their investigation into the missing Sedibeng mayoral chain, valued at R465,000, has been closed. The ceremonial chain went missing after the state of the district address on June 23 2023. The mayor, Lerato Maloka, had allegedly put it on the shelf in her office after she finished the address and it was never seen again. A case of theft was opened in November that year, but the chain is yet to be found. Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that no arrests had been made. 'Investigations were conducted and the docket brought before the deputy public prosecutor, who declined to prosecute, hence the matter was closed on July 25,' she said. Asked why the matter was taken to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) though there was no suspect, Nevhuhulwi said: 'Some of the cases are first investigated then brought to Senior Public Prosecutor of the Director of Public Prosecutions, whether someone is arrested or not. And this is one of those cases.' The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala described the closure of the case as disturbing. 'This is a serious matter that leaves suspicions, as the case has be suddenly closed without any arrests or recovery of the mayoral chain,' he said. Chabalala has since written to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an 'unresolved matter'. In the letter, he raised concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of public assets within the Sedibeng district municipality. 'The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. 'Your intervention is critical to restoring confidence and ensuring that those responsible for any negligence or misconduct are held accountable. I trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Please keep me informed of any actions taken or progress made in addressing this issue,' reads part of the letter.

Businessman claiming Gaza roots deported from South Africa for fraud

Image: File A businessman claiming to have Gaza, Palestine roots has left South Africa after failing to stop the Department of Home Affairs' bid to deport him after finding he had been using a fraudulent name. Manar Alnajjar or 'Frederik van Wyk' had been detained at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Mogale City after being arrested in January this year at OR Tambo International Airport on his return from a business trip in Dubai. He was charged with possession of a fraudulent South African identity document and passport. Alnajjar appeared before the Nigel Magistrate's Court and pleaded guilty to contravening the Immigration Act and fraud in April and sentenced to three months direct imprisonment for fraud and R120,000 for being in the country illegally. The court suspended R100,000 of the amount for three years on condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence. After completing his sentence, Alnajjar was transferred to the Lindela Repatriation Centre for deportation. In his defence, he claimed he first entered the country in 2007 using a visitor's visa and subsequently obtained a general work visa in February 2011. Alnajjar stated that he aspired to be a permanent South Africa citizen and engaged the services of an immigration agent. Afterwards, they visited the offices of the Home Affairs in Nigel, which then furnished him with the South African ID containing his photograph and under the name 'Frederik van Wyk'. It was during his stay at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in July that Alnajjar launched an urgent application to the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg to force Home Affairs director-general Livhuwani Makhode, minister Dr. Leon Schreiber and the head of the centre to release him to legalise his status in the country. Alnajjar told the court that he previously held a Jordanian passport and that his family is originally from Gaza but after the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbours, his family along with others were forced to relocate to Jordan. During his time in South Africa, he knowingly used the fraudulent document and used it to apply for a passport. Alnajjar added that he had a life partner who is a Ukrainian citizen, also a permanent resident and holder of a permanent South African non-citizen document, and together they had a daughter, who is 11 months old. In 2013, he married a Bulgarian citizen but divorced her in 2022. He also insisted that he is a successful businessman and a shareholder of a company operating in the recycling space in and outside South Africa and that he employed about ten people. Alnajjar said the company had been steadily expanding until he was arrested earlier this year. However, Acting Judge Patrick Malungana said the court could not countenance the perpetuation of illegal activities despite showing remorse by pleading guilty for fraud after he was arrested in possession of those fraudulent documents. 'The applicant (Alnajjar) has known all along of his fraudulent identity document. It is only when the law caught up with him that he pleaded guilty, and has some sort of expectation for the law to prevent his deportation because he has some family and business interests in the country,' the acting judge said, explaining his decision to dismiss the urgent application last week.
