The abduction of the mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality, Lerato Maloka, has been linked by sources to her media briefing where she announced that she requested the Gauteng provincial government to institute an investigation into corruption in the municipality.
Maloka and her driver were hijacked and kidnapped from Alberton on Friday and both were found unharmed and reunited with their families on Saturday night, police confirmed.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the investigations were ongoing and a manhunt for the suspects is underway.
Sources claimed a link between the abduction to a media briefing held by Maloka last week, where she announced that has written to the Gauteng MEC for Local Government, Jacob Mamabolo, and requested a full investigation into corruption at the municipality.
She wants the investigation to focus on senior municipal officials, who she claims have paid themselves approximately one million rand from the council coffers.
She also made claims of irregular appointments even though the municipality does not have money and officials lying to the council about senior manager appointments.
Maloka said she has also written to the Public Protector asking for help.
She said her efforts to make the municipality follow the law and serve the people properly have been ignored.
A criminal complaint was recently laid against Maloka, alleging that she stole the mayoral chain after a break-in at her office.
Maloka denied the allegations, saying she was a victim of lies and harassment because she was trying to clean up the municipality.
The Sedibeng mayoral chain, valued at R465,000, mysteriously disappeared after the State of the District Address on June 23, 2023, but the case of theft was not opened until November 2023.
The allegations against Maloka also included improper use of municipal resources such as taking expensive trips using municipal money, including a costly flight to support an employee at a funeral.
The allegations resulted in the mayor's removal from office by a Council Vote of No Confidence in January 2025, but she was re-elected three weeks later.
'It cannot be that the mayor is exposing corruption and announcing her intention to investigate and the next thing she is hijacked and kidnapped. This is very suspicious,' said a source, adding that this could be influenced by those who want to see her out of the office.
Several efforts to get a comment from Maloka were unsuccessful.
The municipality's spokesperson, Nomvula Khalo, confimed that Maloka had written a letter to Mamabolo, but said he was unaware of the content of the communication.
Mamabolo's spokesperson Theo Nkonki said the matter should be addressed with the police, adding the department was not in a position to comment.
Sedibeng ANC spokesperson, Velile Mkhontwana, did not respond to messages and calls.
Meanwhile, the DA has announced that the council has resolved to write to Mamabolo and request the suspension of Maloka.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party said Maloka had given a press interview behind closed doors during council proceedings, which included debate to determined her future in the mayoral chair.

EFF Youth Command calls on NPA to appeal brail granted to WSU official accused of murder

DURBAN - The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC) has called on the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) to appeal bail granted to a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) official linked to the murder of student Sisonke Mbolekwa. Manelisi Mampane, who was charged with the murder of Mbolekwa and the attempted murder of two others, was granted R10,000 bail by the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The decision has sparked disruptive student protests that have led to the arrests of three students. ALSO READ: Police call for calm as WSU students protest after the release of Manelisi Mampane The EFF's youth wing at the institution says the judgement is concerning given the amount of evidence in the matter. The EFF Youth Command says it's alarmed by the Mthatha Magistrates Court decision to grant bail to Manelisi Mampane. Mampane was charged for allegedly shooting and killing student Sisonke Mbolekwa and injuring other students during a protest in April. The red berets believe the accused is a threat to students and may interfere with the case as he will have access to electronic communication and the institution's database. The youth command's national coordinator, Naledi Chirwa-Mpungose, is calling on the NPA to challenge the decision, citing the safety of witnesses. She's added that the presiding magistrate must give a full account of how he decided to grant Mampane bail.

Dundee motorcycle crash leaves father fighting for recovery

The biking community is rallying to support local rider Jono Pienaar, who suffered a life-altering motorcycle accident on Saturday, May 31. Riding home from a charity Poker Run to pick up his daughter, Jono was struck head-on by a car that pulled out in front of him near the Engen Garage on Karel Landman Street. Initially released from the hospital with only Panado syrup, Jono's condition worsened overnight. After a house call by a local doctor, it was confirmed he had sustained severe trauma to his groin and pelvic area, leaving him unable to walk. An update on June 3 from friend Esme Steenkamkp revealed a pelvic dislocation fracture requiring a brace for four to eight weeks. The brace alone costs between R3,000 and R4,000. With Jono bedridden and his wife, Paige, forced to take leave to provide round-the-clock care, the family is struggling to keep food on the table. 'Friends, neighbours and fellow riders are asking anyone who can to contribute whatever they can to help Jono's family weather this crisis. Any donation—no matter how small—will go directly toward groceries, medical needs and basic living expenses until he can return to work. 'To support Jono and his family, please go to the Back a Buddy page to help Jono. Your generosity will make a real difference as he begins the long road to recovery,' said friend and fundraising organiser, Jackie Vermuelen.

EFF Youth Command slams court for granting Walter Sisulu University employee bail

The EFF Youth Command (EFFYC) has lambasted the Mthatha magistrate's court's decision to grant bail to Manelisi Mampana, the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) staff member accused of killing 24-year-old student Sisonke Mbolekwa during a student protest in April. Mampana, the acting residence manager at WSU, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He was released on R10,000 bail on Tuesday. This has caused anger among students, the victims' families and the public. The EFFYC described the court's decision as a betrayal of justice and a demonstration of how the legal system 'remains sensitive to criminals while neglectful to the aspirations of victims. 'That such a person is now permitted to return to society, even temporarily, undermines the seriousness of these charges and sends a disturbing message about the value placed on students' lives.'
