Disappointing debut season drove Mahrez in Al-Ahli's Asian title push

Disappointing debut season drove Mahrez in Al-Ahli's Asian title push

CNA04-05-2025

JEDDAH :Al-Ahli winger Riyad Mahrez said he was driven to lead his Saudi Pro League side to the Asian Champions League Elite title by a barren first season at the Jeddah-based club as the Algerian added another trophy to his packed resume on Saturday.
Mahrez had a quiet game by his standards as Al-Ahli defeated Japan's Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 to win the continental title for the first time at King Adbullah Sports City, but the 34-year-old had been influential throughout the club's run to the title.
With nine goals and eight assists in 13 appearances in the competition, the five-times Premier League winner with Leicester City and Manchester City was one of the key factors in Al-Ahli securing success.
Victory means Mahrez and teammate Roberto Firmino added the Asian Champions League Elite to the UEFA Champions League crowns they won with City and Liverpool respectively, completing a rare continental club double.
"It's different," Mahrez said when asked to compare the Asian title win with his other successes.
"There was the title with Leicester, (the 2019 African Cup of Nations) with Algeria, with City. I think all have a different taste, a different emotion. I cannot say I prefer one or the other.
"I think this is as good as all the titles I have. It's a different competition, a different continent, this is new.
"Last year when I came here and we didn't win anything I was really upset, and this year I really wanted to make a stand and win something with this club, these players, the board, the manager and the people behind him.
"We're so happy and we have to enjoy it now."
CELEBRATIONS
Al-Ahli's win sparked wild celebrations throughout the night across Jeddah as a club that has often lived in the shadow of neighbours Al-Ittihad and Riyadh's Al-Hilal finally tasted continental success after runners-up finishes in 1986 and 2012.
Matthias Jaissle's side completed their title-winning run as the only unbeaten team in the competition, winning 12 and drawing one of their 13 games.
Al-Ahli had been in ominous form throughout, but it was the 3-2 semi-final success over four-times champions Al-Hilal on Tuesday that allowed Mahrez and his teammates to believe the trophy could be won.
"Throughout the competition we played so well," he said. "We didn't lose one game, we played against many teams whether it was big teams, games away or home. We always played well.
"The group stage was not easy. We managed the group and after the semi-final we showed to everyone that we are the best team.
"Even against Al-Hilal, who are a very good team, we showed to everyone we can beat anyone and I think we deserve it.

No goal, but Messi's influence on show in Club World Cup opener

MIAMI - Although he did not score, Lionel Messi again proved his worth with Inter Miami, showing some brilliance and avoiding injury as they got off to a decent start in the Club World Cup with a goalless draw against African giants Al-Ahly from Egypt on Saturday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Messi draws massive crowds to stadiums, and attendance will be a key measure of the revamped Club World Cup's success or failure. On Saturday, almost 61,000 fans filled the Hard Rock Stadium, making for a festive atmosphere and giving the tournament a satisfying start. KEY QUOTES Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami coach: "We were very nervous and anxious in the first half, which is normal given the context. In the second half, we were more patient. We played all over the pitch, created chances and could have scored to win the game. But it's a 90-minute match, and let's not forget we struggled in that first half. "It's clear that when we find Leo (Messi) in the right positions and give him good passes, we have more options and chances. In the first half, we kept trying to find him with the first ball, but they were ready for us. "When we were more patient, we were able to find Leo. And we all know what he can do when he finds space." Jose Riveiro, Al-Ahly coach: "It was a very intense game, with nervousness and mistakes from both sides, but we controlled the scenario better in the first half, creating chances. But it's a pity we did not convert one of them. "In the second half, Miami were getting better and after 60, 70 minutes it could have gone in either direction. We have to make sure next game we are a little bit better. "We first made sure Messi was cut off from his providers, but then he appeared in those set pieces and second actions after set pieces." Messi falls just short in Club World Cup curtain-raiser stalemate

Jun 14, 2025; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; A shot from Inter Miami CF forward Lionel Messi (10) hits the post during the second half against Al Ahly FC during a group stage match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images REUTERS MIAMI - Lionel Messi drew vast crowds and showed flashes of his brilliance when his Inter Miami side were held to a goalless draw by African giants Al-Ahly as the revamped Club World Cup got off to a festive start on Saturday. Fans showed up en masse for the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, but Messi could not fully deliver, his best chance coming through a last-second attempt that was deflected onto the crossbar. Inter Miami next face FC Porto on Thursday in Atlanta while Al-Ahly, who benefited from raucous, massive support, will take on Palmeiras in New York, where more of their fans are expected to turn up. No incidents were reported at the game after around 1,000 protesters gathered in the morning near U.S. President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, about 70 miles (110 km) north of Miami, waving placards and chanting slogans as part of coordinated nationwide "No Kings" demonstrations. In Miami, 60,927 fans almost filled the 65,000-capacity stadium for Inter Miami's clash with Al-Ahly dismissing, at least on the night, concerns about the attractiveness of the tournament featuring 32 teams for the first time, a year before the World Cup in the U.S. Inter Miami, whose home attendances average 20,663 in their 21,550-seat Chase Stadium, have been a major road draw in 2025, regularly attracting record crowds across the country since Messi's arrival in 2023. Adan De La Rosa travelled from Mexico just to see Messi play. "There's a lot of excitement to see Messi, it's the same for everyone," he said. Al-Ahly, backed by dozens of thousands of fans, got off to a strong start but wasted two early chances and Oscar Ustari parried away Trezeguet's poorly taken penalty kick after Zizo was fouled in the box by Telasco Segovia. Messi threatened at times after spending some time on the ground after being hit on the knee, but Miami could feel lucky not to be behind at halftime. Miami, however, stepped up a gear after the break, and Messi came close when his nicely curled 25-metre free kick kissed the post and hit the side netting. With six minutes left, the World Cup winner scooped a perfect cross for Fafa Picault, whose header was tipped over the bar by Mohamed Elshenawy. He came an inch close in the dying second when his curled strike from outside the box was tipped onto the bar by Elshenawy. The Club World Cup continues on Sunday with Champions League winners Paris St Germain taking on Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich playing Auckland City. New-look Man City crave winning feeling at Club World Cup

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and his staff overseeing training ahead of the Club World Cup. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Bolstered by a £100 million (S$174 million) spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup, Manchester City are determined to erase the memory of a disappointing season by returning to winning ways in the United States. For the first time in eight years, City ended the domestic campaign without a major trophy as Pep Guardiola's men surrendered the Premier League crown to Liverpool after an unprecedented four consecutive titles. A Champions League exit before the last 16 for the first time since 2012-13 and a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace compounded a miserable season for a club that has grown used to success since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover 17 years ago. At one time the month-long expanded Club World Cup, sandwiched between two gruelling seasons, was the last thing Guardiola or his players appeared to want. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri hinted back in September that a players' strike was 'close' over fixture congestion. Defender Manuel Akanji more recently said the City squad was 'not exactly overjoyed' at playing in the tournament given the limited rest time. However, City are keen to turn the page from last season and begin afresh with major changes in the squad and coaching staff. Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli were all signed last week to beat the deadline to feature in the Club World Cup from the start. City also spent more than £172 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. Adding Claudio Echeverri, who arrived in Manchester in January at the end of a loan spell at River Plate, nine of Guardiola's 27-man squad for the tournament have been at City for less than six months. Former City captain Kyle Walker and club-record signing Jack Grealish have been left out of the travelling party in a changing of the guard. Meanwhile, Guardiola has also made radical changes to his staff with Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp's former assistant at Liverpool, and ex-City defender Kolo Toure joining the backroom team and three other coaches departing. 'This is a very, very serious competition,' said the City boss. 'In the summer, the whole world will be watching this. 'A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going there to win it.' City begin the tournament as third favourites in the British bookmakers odds behind newly-crowned European champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. They should ease through a group containing Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Italian giants Juventus. Yet there is an air of mystery around what to expect from City given the fresh faces and their inconsistency over the last season. After a miserable mid-winter run of one win in 13 games in all competitions, Guardiola's side recovered to an extent as they finished third in the Premier League. The additions of Reijnders and Cherki add some much-needed verve to an ageing midfield and compensate for the departure of Kevin de Bruyne to Napoli. Ait-Nouri's arrival ends a long spell without a natural left-back and will add an extra attacking dimension down that side. Most crucially of all, though, Rodri is back from the cruciate knee ligament injury that decimated his and City's season. When the Spanish midfielder went down against Arsenal in late September, City were still undefeated and top of the Premier League. His importance as the key cog in Guardiola's machine was brutally exposed in the months that followed. The 28-year-old made his return in the final week of the Premier League season. With Rodri restored and Guardiola's squad refreshed, City could be a force to be reckoned with again over the next month and beyond.
