EEG's 29th Can Collection Day Supports the Year of Community
Dubai, UAE – February 22nd 2025 – 'Say YES to Recycling, NO to Carbon Emissions!' – This bold declaration echoed throughout the UAE on 22nd February 2025, as Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) hosted its 29th cycle of the annual 'Can Collection Day', an event that truly embodied the spirit of the Year of Community. The event proved that when individuals and organisations unite for a common cause, incredible things happen. This initiative was a shining example of how collective action can drive lasting environmental change, aligning seamlessly with UN SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reinforcing the power of collaboration to tackle the world's greatest challenges.
On this transformative day, thousands of participants from all walks of life came together in an inspiring show of solidarity, answering the call to protect the planet, reduce carbon footprint and contribute to building a sustainable future for generations to come. From schools and families to businesses and government agencies, the UAE rallied as one to make a powerful statement that sustainability is not just a responsibility – it's a shared passion.
Key highlights from Can Collection Day 2025 include: 11,945 kg of aluminium cans collected on the day

These extraordinary figures are the result of the participation of 272 entities from all seven Emirates, they demonstrate the immense success of this year's event and also represent a profound commitment to environmental change. The action taken by all participants has directly contributed to preventing 179 metric tons of CO 2 emissions, playing a crucial role in our fight against climate change and the national strategy of being carbon neutral by 2050.
In the words of Mrs. Habiba Al Mar'ashi, the Co-Founder and Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group:

The prestigious celebration was held at Dubai Knowledge Park and brought together a dynamic gathering of academic institutions, government entities, corporate leaders, diplomatic representatives, media, families and civil societies. In her opening address, EEG Co-Founder and Chairperson, Habiba Al Mar'ashi, emphasised the critical importance of the 2025 World Environment Day theme. She said 'Recycling is no longer optional—it is essential. As we stand at a critical juncture for our planet, the Emirates Recycling Awards reminds us that sustainability is a shared responsibility. Through our collective commitment to responsible waste management and environmental stewardship, we are actively shaping a greener, healthier future for generations to come.' She further lauded the UAE leadership for declaring 2025 as the 'Year of Community,' recognising the significance of uniting people through shared purpose. 'The spirit of community engagement and environmental action has always been at the core of EEG's work. As we celebrate this Year of Community, let us remember that real transformation begins with active, informed and united citizens. Environmental protection must be a collective endeavor,' she added. The Emirates Recycling Awards are a cornerstone initiative that celebrates outstanding contributions to waste diversion and resource recovery. This year's awards underscored the far-reaching impact of EEG's robust recycling campaigns, which have tangibly reduced carbon emissions, conserved energy and protected precious natural resources. Mrs. Al Mar'ashi announced that in the past year, EEG collected and sent for recycling a total of 1,524,769 kilograms of recyclable waste and diverted them from ending in landfills, achieved through its multi-category campaigns across the UAE. Dubai Judicial Institute (DJI) organised an insightful workshop titled 'Management of Partnerships and Their Impact on Community Sustainability,' in alignment with the objectives of the 'Year of Community' and its theme 'Hand in Hand.' The workshop aimed to promote a culture of institutional collaboration and shared responsibility across various sectors, while enhancing the effectiveness of partnerships as key drivers of sustainable development. This initiative reflects the UAE leadership's enduring vision for inclusive and resilient community advancement through strategic government collaboration. The workshop mainly focused on partnership management within government entities to reinforce the understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern public and community partnerships. It also sought to boost institutional capabilities in managing these partnerships, encourage strategic thinking for community sustainability, promote a culture of integration, and offer practical solutions to potential challenges. The program explored three main themes, including the legislative framework for government and community partnerships, governance of partnerships, and its contribution to promoting transparency and accountability, and analysing the community impact of partnerships. Her Excellency Judge Dr Ebtessam Ali Al Bedwawi, Director General of the Dubai Judicial Institute, stated: 'The workshop was organised as part of Dubai's strategic vision to reinforce cross-sector collaboration and lay foundations for effective community partnerships that advance sustainable development and public welfare. Through our dedicated training programs and workshops, we aim to raise legal awareness at both community and institutional levels, while cultivating a culture of shared responsibility. Dubai Judicial Institute organises workshop for government entities on ‘Partnership Management and Its Impact in Achieving Community Sustainability'
Dubai Judicial Institute (DJI) is inviting partnership management across all government entities to participate in its workshop titled 'Partnerships Management and Its Impact in Achieving Community Sustainability,' which will be held at the institute's headquarters on May 20, 2025. The initiative aligns with DJI's dedication to promoting a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility in support of the 'Year of Community', which was declared by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The workshop aims to highlight the critical role of effective governmental partnership management in boosting community sustainability and accelerating development. It is designed to cover three key themes, including the legislative framework for government and community partnerships, frameworks for partnership governance and their impact on transparency and accountability and the legal frameworks regulating these partnerships. Participating entities can nominate two representatives from their partnership department or other relevant sections to attend the workshop. Nominations must be submitted via email to training@ before May 14, 2025.
