Clawson's Knights of Columbus announces Lenten fish fry will not take place
Another popular metro Detroit place noted for its Friday Lenten fish fry will idle its fryers this season.
Fish dipped in batter will not be sizzling at Clawson's Knights of Columbus No. 4188 on North Main Street in Clawson.
A message on the organization's website states, 'Our hall is in the process of being sold' followed by 'no fish fry for Lent 2025.'
For more than three decades, the Clawson Knights of Columbus offered the fish fry each Friday during Lent. Run by Council members and volunteers, the fish fry was known for its buffet, being reasonably priced and attended by hundreds. Battered and fried fish, a baked fish option plus crab cakes were the main dishes.
But it was other items, too, that made this fish fry a huge draw.
"It was the variety and quantity of food you got," said Terry Clayton, grand knight of the Knights of Columbus post No. 4188. "Ours was a buffet and what made ours so different was we offered a wide variety of foods, between the fish, crab cakes, mac and cheese, vegetables, French fries, cole slaw, dessert, and soft drinks and coffee.'
And all that variety paired with a buffet drew big crowds.
"We would usually get between 400-500 people on the seventh Friday during Lent," Clayton said.
Serving hundreds of people on Fridays during Lent was also typical for Sweetest Heart of Mary Church in Detroit.

But last week, the church stunned fish fry followers with the news its popular fish fry would scale back for this 2025 Lenten season. The church's fish fry featuring beer-battered cod plus other fish options, shrimp, and pierogi dinners, typically started on Ash Wednesday and happened every Friday during Lent.
Instead, the church will offer one fish fry dinner special event. Taking place on 5-7 p.m. on March 21 at the parish hall will be a buffet-style dinner with fried cod, grilled shrimp, pierogi, baked potato, mac and cheese, coleslaw and dessert. Tickets are $25 per person purchased in advance at givebutter.com/shmseafood.
Sweetest Heart of Mary's fish fry is one of the church's key fundraisers. Others are its annual pierogi festival, monthly dinners in the parish hall, and weddings.

Detroit Zoo's red panda twins moved to Ohio, Connecticut zoos
Two 11-month-old red pandas at the Detroit Zoo have left their parents for new homes across the country. Female red panda twins Patti and Ponya have been moved to the Akron Zoo in Ohio and Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut, respectively, the Detroit Zoo shared on social media. The Beardsley Zoo announced Ponya's arrival in May. The Akron Zoo announced Patti's arrival in June and has apparently changed her name to Sundara. Even though the twins are gone, Detroit Zoo visitors can still see parents Ginger and Ravi at the Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest. "In the wild, red panda cubs grow independent from their parents after about a year — so this next step is a natural part of growing up!" according to the Detroit Zoo. Patti and Ponya were born almost a year ago on June 17. The birth made Ginger a first-time mom, who was 3 years old at the time. Their dad, Ravi, was 7. The twins' transfers were recommended by the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, according the zoo. "While we'll miss their playful presence, we're proud to see them take this next step," the zoo said. Detroit Lions signing Trystan Colon as insurance with Frank Ragnow retiring: Report
It didn't take long for the Detroit Lions to find a backup plan at center. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Lions have signed offensive lineman Trystan Colon to a one-year deal. Colon, 27, has played in 51 NFL games for two teams over five seasons, most recently for the Arizona Cardinals in 2024. He was undrafted out of Missouri in 2020. Advertisement Colon, formerly known as Colon-Castillo, played in all 17 games for the Cardinals in 2024, making a career-high seven starts. He has made four career starts at center, all with the Baltimore Ravens from 2020-22, and 11 starts at right guard from 2023-24 with the Cardinals. The signing follows the retirement of longtime Lions center Frank Ragnow, who announced his retirement via Instagram on Monday. Ragnow, a first-round pick in 2018, was the Lions' starting center from 2018-24, making 96 starts. ANALYSIS: Lions lose one of their most critical players. The road to the Super Bowl just got harder. Among the options the Lions are considering to replace Ragnow is 2025 second-round draft pick Tate Ratledge, who has been taking snaps at center during organized team activities.
