Demolishing six illegal hand wells in Ibb province

Saba Yemen04-02-2025

Ibb - Saba:
The General Authority for Water Resources and Installations in Ibb province carried out on Tuesday a campaign to demolish six illegal hand wells in the districts of Sadah, Rif Ibb and Sabra as part of the authority's efforts to curb the phenomenon of illegal drilling and the depletion of groundwater.
During the campaign, the Director General of the Authority's branch in the province, Mohammed Al-Warafi, confirmed that one well was backfilled under a court ruling, while the rest of the wells were backfilled for violating the regulations governing well drilling and groundwater exploitation, in coordination with judicial and security authorities.
He pointed out that these wells threaten water wealth with depletion and drought, as a result of unregulated and random drilling in violation of the Water Law No. 33 of 2002, its amendments of 2006, and its executive regulations.
Al-Warafi called on the owners of old and existing wells to expedite the registration and rectification of their wells, and to abide by the laws and regulations governing the drilling of wells. He pointed out that the Authority will continue its inspection and monitoring campaigns to ensure the fair and sustainable use of groundwater in the province.
He praised the efforts of the judicial authorities in the districts and their role in limiting these acts and issuing the necessary decisions about them, as well as the security agencies in the districts and their interaction with the campaign.

Prominent Yemeni Sheikh Dies After Two Months in Detention by Security Belt militia

A well-known Yemeni cleric, Sheikh Anis Saeed Al-Jardami, has died in a hospital in Aden, Yemen, after his health deteriorated while in detention. Al-Jardemi had been taken into custody by the Security Belt Forces, a paramilitary security unit affiliated with the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC), in early April. According to human rights sources, Al-Jardami's arrest was reportedly linked to audio recordings he shared on social media, in which he criticized the STC and its leader. He was held without a court order for two months before being transferred to the hospital due to his failing health. The circumstances surrounding Al-Jardemi's detention and death have sparked concerns about human rights abuses in Yemen.
