Jeff Bezos's Venice wedding celebrations begin with star-studded party after fresh protests

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's star-studded wedding celebrations in Venice have begun, with VIP guests including the Kardashians descending on the Italian city. The billionaire Amazon founder and his journalist fiancee waved to onlookers as they left a luxury hotel to travel to their pre-wedding reception by water taxi on Thursday evening. Hollywood star Orlando Bloom was seen flashing a peace sign to fans as he left Venice's Gritti Palace Hotel and he was soon followed by TV presenter Oprah Winfrey, who smiled and waved. Kim and Khloe Kardashian travelled to the reception with their mother Kris Jenner - who snapped a picture of the pair on a water taxi - and other notable figures in town for the nuptials include Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Some 200-250 A-list guests from showbusiness, politics and finance are expected to attend the events, with the wedding and its parts estimated to cost €40m-€48m (£34m-£41m). Bezos, his soon-to-be wife and their famous guests have taken over numerous locations in the city, with the couple staying in the luxury Aman hotel, where rooms go for at least €4,000 per night. The first of the weekend's many wedding parties is taking place in the cloisters of Madonna dell'Orto, a medieval church that hosts masterpieces by 16th century painter Tintoretto. While the couple and their A-list guests were all smiles, some in Venice are not happy about the wedding - with protesters seeing it as an example of the city being gift-wrapped for ultra-rich outsiders. An activist climbed one of the poles in the main St Mark's Square on Thursday, unfurling a banner which said: "The 1% ruins the world." Elsewhere, a life-size mannequin of Bezos clutching an Amazon box was dropped into one of the city's famous canals. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding in numbers €48m price tag The wedding and its parts are expected to cost €40m-€48m (£34-£41m), Luca Zaia, the president of Venice's local government, said on Tuesday. This includes sizeable charity donations from the Amazon founder, including €1m (£850k) to Corila, a consortium that studies Venice's lagoon ecosystem, local media has reported. 90 private jets The first private jets began landing at Venice airport on Tuesday and there will be around 90 in total, Mr Zaia said. They're not all arriving in Venice though, as some have landed at the nearby Treviso and Verona airports. 250 guests Five of the city's most luxurious hotels have been booked out to host an estimated 200-250 guests. These include the celeb favourite Cipriani, where George and Amal Clooney married in 2014. 30 water taxis Attendees of course aren't hopping on public water buses to get around the city's many islands. The wedding's organisers have booked at least 30 water taxis for them to use instead. In a bid to keep demonstrators away from Thursday's party, the city council banned pedestrians and water traffic from the area surrounding the venue, from 4.30pm local time to midnight. 3:00 The couple will exchange their vows on Friday, on the small island of San Giorgio, opposite St Mark's Square.

Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos wedding fashion verdict: Ivanka Trump's Riviera summer style is chic and appropriate - but Kim Kardashian missed the memo, says SHANE WATSON

Spare a thought for the guests assembled in Venice for the Bezos wedding. Not only is this the most scrutinised wedding anyone can remember, those attending it have been in the spotlight since they started arriving two days ahead of the ceremony on Friday. The Bezos-Sanchez wedding began on Thursday with the first of three days of parties in Venice – but impeccable sources reveal that the Amazon founder and journalist-turned-philanthropist Lauren Sanchez are already married. Having kept a low profile for the last two days (wearing a black Alaia dress on her arrival followed by vintage Alexander McQueen on Wednesday night), Lauren stunned in a satin, off-the-shoulder Schiaparelli gown embroidered with flowers and birds, with a shimmering gold metallic waisted bodice, from the label's haute couture spring/summer collection. Inside sources say that the soon-to-be Mrs Bezos is expected to wear 27 different outfits over the course of this wedding marathon and some have good money on the Dress being custom made Dolce and Gabbana - not least because both designers were seen entering the Aman on Thursday. (Then again, they could easily have been there for a fitting of one of the other 26). The guests will need almost as many outfit changes as the bride over the next few days; luckily this guest list need no encouragement and they've started in style. Queen Rania of Jordan made a low key but sleek Jacki O-style entrance in all-black as she accessorised with a £1,090-Jacquemus Bambola bag and Saint Laurent sunglasses. President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, arrived at Marco Polo airport wearing a Double J bralette crop top and pencil skirt in cream with terracotta and orange medallion print details. Online the label advises this co-ord is made for 'summer's most fabulous palazzo parties', so that was easy. Meanwhile. Kim Kardashian did not appear to have got the memo; yes, we're all the super rich but we're here for a society wedding in the most romantic city in the world. Kim Kardashian looked like she was turning up for an Ibiza DJ set in a Margiela black stretch bandeau top and a branded Balenciaga stretch black long skirt She looked like she was turning up for an Ibiza DJ set in a Margiela black stretch bandeau top and a branded Balenciaga stretch black long skirt, accessorised with £1,415 stilleto-heeled Amina Muaddi snakeskin boots and hardcore Gianfranco Ferre sunglasses. Then, on Thursday night she hit the 12th century tiles in a skin-tight snakeskin ultra low-cut nightclubbing dress. Her mother was similarly dressed in all black but a more flowing, covered, long sleeved two-piece. So far the looks fall into two camps: fresh and classy... and hot exercise video. Khloe Kardashian's Skims X Dolce and Gabbanna leopard print bodystocking catsuit felt like the wrong choice for day one of the biggest wedding on earth and Kim looked alarmingly like a covered-up Bianca Censori, the often-naked girlfriend of Kim's controversial ex-husband Kanye West. The 44-year-old reality star looked tinier than ever as she arrived in Venice, Italy on Thursday ahead of the most-anticipated nuptials of the year. The SKIMS mogul was one of the many celebrities who shrugged off raging protests by the Italian locals. Surprisingly, leading the classic Riviera summer look is Ivanka Trump. Besides, the Talented Mr Ripley-style co-ord she wore on arrival (accessorised with cute rustic espadrilles) she's already worn a series of pretty dresses. First on the list was a £189 flared waisted halterneck red dress by House of CB, which was very Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday in spirit. She's also worn a £320 bright green sundress by mid-range Brazilian brand Farm Rio with a structured basket weave shoulder bag, topped off with a tidy straw hat. Fun and fresh and summery. Ivanka Trump posted a snap of herself in a white and gold mini dress adorned with floral pieces, which she captioned, 'Ready to celebrate the love story of our friends' Like daughter, like mother! Kris Jenner was similarly dressed in all black but a more flowing covered long sleeved two piece On Thursday, Kim hit the 12th century tiles in a skin-tight snakeskin ultra low-cut nightclubbing dress Her third choice was a youthful slim maxi with a ruffle hem and a smocked bodice, £192, by American brand Hill House Home. This might feel a little too Provencal-market-browsing than history making in Venice - but online the first review is from a customer who bought it for her rehearsal dinner and 'other related wedding events'. Seems there's no such thing as a one-day wedding any more.

Kylie Jenner puts on a VERY busty display in a plunging lace gown as she joins stunning sister Kendall at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's swanky wedding rehearsal dinner in Venice

Kylie Jenner put on a very busty display as she joined sister Kendall for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's wedding rehearsal dinner in Venice on Thursday evening. Kylie, 27, who is attending the $20M nuptials without boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, 29, stunned in a daringly plunging champagne lace gown. The make-up mogul's dress hugged every inch of her jaw-dropping figure and showcased her ample cleavage as she gracefully boarded a water taxi. Shielding her eyes behind chic shades she carried a glass of white wine as she headed to dinner alongside famous guests including sister Kim, 44, and Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, 50. Meanwhile Kendall, 29, looked equally stunning in an eye-catching floral dress which boasted a racy split and fitted her slender physique like a glove. The Bezos wedding began on Thursday with the first of three days of parties in Venice – but impeccable sources reveal that the Amazon founder and journalist-turned-philanthropist Lauren Sanchez are already married. A source closely connected to the organisation of the week's events said: 'They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. 'The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law.' The source adds: 'When they were planning the wedding, they were clear about the fact that they were already secretly married. 'There is no application for a wedding licence from the couple because it was not required. 'Whatever happens at the wedding on Friday, it will not be a wedding. Under Italian law, it will not be a wedding celebration, any vows said or rings exchanged will have no legal meaning.' The source added that Bezos had personally confirmed that he and Sanchez – who met when both were married to other people – are already legally married, and that they had also signed a pre-nuptial agreement to protect his $244 billion (£177 billion) fortune. But Venice will still see a party unlike any other. Amid local protests, celebrities, politicians and business titans have gathered in the city known, ironically given the disruption, as La Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic of Venice. As the eyes of the world focused on the event, staff at the privately owned Madonna dell Orto cloisters - where the couple held their 'eve of' reception with finger food and pizza - erected tents to stop overflying drones from picturing the guests. Policemen on jetskis meanwhile patrolled the entrance to the nearest canal. The source added that Bezos had personally confirmed that he and Sanchez – who met when both were married to other people – are already legally married Former US President Barack Obama was among guests – he and Bezos have been on warm terms for years, and Bezos donated $100 million (£72 million) to the Obama Foundation in 2021 It's thought that the event included speeches from the bride to the groom and vice versa. The two three star hotels neighbouring the cloister were booked up to house the 150 staff who are working on the wedding. The guests are staying rather more comfortably at the five star Aman, The Gritti Palace and the Cipriani. Some of the world's most eligible bachelors are in Venice for the wedding – Orlando Bloom, freshly split from fiancée Katy Perry; divorced sporting superstar Tom Brady, and divorced talent agent and billionaire music executive Scooter Braun. Former US President Barack Obama was among guests – he and Bezos have been on warm terms for years, and Bezos donated $100 million (£72 million) to the Obama Foundation in 2021. Others attending include former chat show host Oprah Winfrey and her best friend, TV presenter and author Gayle King, who went on the much-mocked space 'flight' on Bezos Blue Origin rocket last month with Sanchez and an all-female team. Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka is attending along with husband Jared Kushner, but the President himself – reportedly invited – will not come to Venice. Both Bezos and Sanchez were there for Trump's inauguration earlier this year and Bezos attracted much criticism when his Washington Post newspaper declined to endorse Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the US election last year. Queen Rania of Jordan has also been seen, as have fashion duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The build-up has not gone smoothly, however. Plans were ripped up and remade over the past week as the bride and groom reeled from public hostility to their descent on Venice, and responded to global political turbulence following US airstrikes in Iran. They have now left their $500 million (£363 million) yacht, the Koru, off the coast of Croatia, although it was initially intended to be moored in Venice. The venues for the various celebrations have changed, too, with plans for Saturday's party now moved to Arsenale, the shipbuilding yards, which are easier to make secure. It is thought that singer-songwriter Usher, who also arrived today, may be performing. Reports that Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga will sing have been denied by representatives for both. Protests by disgruntled locals continue, and are planned tonight and throughout the wedding. Sources says that Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has assured the couple that he can guarantee their safety in the middle of the city, however – hence tonight's event at the Madonna dell Orto in the heart of Venice.
