On a monthly basis, the OMC sales in April were up by 20%, against 1.22 million tons recorded in March 2025.
The rise in the sales come in line with a rise in demand as economic activities pick up in the country.

KSE-100 stays flat after hitting all-time high

Trading activity at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained largely volatile, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index remaining largely flat on Thursday. At 11am, the benchmark index was hovering at 121,820.42, an increase of 21.56 points or 0.02%. A mixed trend was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, commercial banks, fertilizer, oil and gas exploration companies and OMCs. Index-heavy stocks, including MARI, POL, WAFI, and MCB, traded in the green. The PSX continued its upward journey for the second straight day and closed at a new all-time high level on Wednesday, mainly driven by positive news on various aspects of the upcoming budget. The benchmark KSE-100 Index rose by 1,348 points or 1.12% to close at a record level of 121,799 points. Internationally, shares in Asia crept higher, and the US dollar languished ahead of the European Central Bank offering its policy outlook for a tumultuous global economy. The dollar slid in the previous session after weak US jobs and services data, with more weighty employment data due on Friday. Damage to the US economy is becoming more apparent from President Donald Trump's erratic tariff action, while bilateral deals remain unrealised. Canada prepared possible reprisals against the imposition of new US metals tariffs while the European Union reported progress in trade talks with Washington. Against that backdrop, market watchers considered the ECB almost certain to cut policy interest rates so will pay greater attention to what bank President Christine Lagarde signals about future decisions. Trump's doubling of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports became effective on Wednesday, hitting Canada and Mexico in particular. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.7% in early trade, whereas Japan's Nikkei stock index slid 0.2%. This is an intra-day update

Fuel market gains momentum

In May 2025, Pakistan's Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) recorded a robust performance, continuing their recovery trend for the third consecutive month. Total industry sales rose to 1.53 million tons, marking a 10 percent year-on-year and 5 percent month-on-month increase — the highest monthly sales figure since November 2024. This brought the cumulative sales for the first eleven months of FY25 (11MFY25) to 14.76 million tons, reflecting a 7 percent year-on-year growth. The uptick was primarily driven by increased demand for motor spirit (MS) and high-speed diesel (HSD), supported by a combination of favourable seasonal, economic, and policy-related factors as well as decreased smuggling. A key contributor to the growth was the seasonal rise in diesel demand due to the ongoing Kharif sowing season. Additionally, lower fuel prices—down approximately 10 percent year-on-year for MS and 8 percent for HSD—enhanced affordability, while continued anti-smuggling efforts shifted volumes from the informal to the formal sector. A low base effect from May 2024 also helped magnify the growth in reported figures. Improved macroeconomic stability and stable fuel prices since September 2024 further anchored consumer behaviour, leading to sustained demand. Product-wise, MS sales grew by 15 percent year-on-year and 6 percent month-on-month, while HSD sales increased by 5 percent year-on-year and 8 percent month-on-month during May-25. Although furnace oil (FO) sales rose 16 percent year-on-year, they declined 5 percent month-on-month, reflecting reduced reliance on FO-based power generation. Meanwhile, high-octane blending component (HOBC) volumes surged by 134 percent year-on-year, though they were slightly down month-on-month due to an increase in petroleum development levy (PDL) rates. Going forward, the OMC sales are expected to maintain their upward trajectory into FY26, driven by stable domestic fuel prices, and continued clampdowns on smuggling. However, the analysts caution that volumetric sales may face pressure in the immediate coming months as the seasonal demand from the Kharif season diminishes and summer school holidays reduce overall mobility. Additionally, the government's reported plan to increase the petroleum in the upcoming budget could lead to higher fuel prices, potentially suppressing demand.

Positive momentum at PSX, KSE-100 gains nearly 1,500 points

A day after shedding over 800 points, bullish momentum returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining nearly 1,500 points during intra-day trading on Tuesday. At 2:15pm, the benchmark index was hovering at 120,366.28, an increase of 1,488.48 points or 1.25%. Buying was observed in key sectors including cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and power generation. Index-heavy stocks including HUBCO, SNGPL, SSGC, OGDC, PPL, MCB, MEBL and UBL traded in the green. In a key development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the forthcoming federal budget had been successful, paving the way for a new phase of economic growth. The premier, while talking to a select group of journalists, said the government had stabilised the economy and would now shift its focus toward sustained development. On Monday, PSX witnessed a volatile session on the first trading day of the week, as early bullish momentum was wiped out by heavy late-session selling, finally the benchmark index closed into negative territory. The benchmark KSE-100 index shed 813.29 points or 0.68% to close at 118,878 points. Internationally, Asian shares edged cautiously higher on Tuesday while the dollar fell to a six-week low as erratic US trade policies clouded over markets and investors turned defensive ahead of key developments later in the week. US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday, days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. The call between the two leaders will be closely watched by markets to see if the tariff-induced blow to global stocks and the dollar this year could get some reprieve or ratchet up, as trade tensions between the world's two largest economies simmer. Data on Monday showed US manufacturing contracted for a third straight month in May and suppliers took the longest time in nearly three years to deliver inputs amid tariffs. The gloomy global trade situation left US futures falling early in the Asian session, failing to sustain the slight gains made during the cash session on Wall Street overnight. Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were both down 0.2% each. In Europe, EUROSTOXX 50 futures advanced 0.28% and FTSE futures added 0.15%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan reversed early losses to last trade 0.6% higher, while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.66%.
