Patna: A gang of autorickshaw drivers has been linked to a string of burglaries in Danapur area where over 12 locked flats and houses were burgled over the past fortnight alone. The burglars primarily targeted homes left vacant while families were away on holiday.
Police have arrested eight suspects and recovered stolen valuables, urging residents to remain cautious when leaving their homes unattended.
Danapur assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Bhanu Pratap Singh inspected three burgled flats on Saturday in the Rupaspur police station area. These flats were targeted on May 20. "Three locked flats were targeted by the thieves and they stole valuables worth Rs 20 lakh," he said, adding that eight suspects, all autorickshaw drivers, were arrested and stolen gold and silver ornaments recovered from their possession.
Rupaspur SHO Ranvijay Kumar said in addition to the May 20 break-ins in R P S Nagar, three more flats in IAS Colony were burgled on May 21 and May 22. "One flat was empty. Around Rs 2 lakh in cash to Rs 2.5 lakh worth of valuables were stolen by the robbers from two flats in IAS Colony. We have identified the miscreants in one case and raids are on to arrest them. The other case is under investigation," he said.
Priyanka Kumari, a resident of Ramjaipal Road whose flat was among those burgled, criticised the lack of police presence.

"Two flats in my apartment were burgled on May 21. Valuables from my flat were taken away by the thieves," she said.
Another resident, Vivek Kumar, detailed his experience in an FIR. He said he locked his flat at 11am on Thursday before travelling to Muzaffarpur with his family. Upon returning at around 5pm, he found the main door's lock broken and the rooms ransacked.
Six flats were also burgled on May 20 in the Khagaul police station area. SHO Roshan Kumar said most of the targeted flats in an apartment at Saguna Mor were unoccupied. "The group of six to seven burglars entered the building from the rear. The gang was busted and they all turned out to be auto drivers, who conducted daytime reconnaissance while driving and struck at night," he said.

Child begging poses a challenge in Kalyana Karnataka

Ballari: In the Kalyana Karnataka region, child begging remains a persistent challenge, despite awareness initiatives and strict legislation. Official data from the State Directorate of Child Rights indicates that 340 children were found begging over past four years. Kalaburagi recorded 123 cases, while Ballari had 77, Koppal 48, Bidar 47, Raichur 39, Yadgir 5, and Vijayanagar 1. The problem encompasses toddlers, minors, and children with disabilities who solicit alms in public spaces, often under the control of organised criminal networks. Shashidhar Kosambe of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights attributes the situation to administrative shortcomings in law enforcement. Commission member Shekargouda G Ramatnal acknowledged the efforts of the District Child Protection Units (DCPU) in child rescue operations. "However, some factions view begging as a business, complicating efforts to eliminate it," he remarked. Records show a notable rise in child begging incidents from 2021-22 to 2024-25 in the region. Despite existing protective legislation, inadequate implementation and rehabilitation schemes impede sustainable solutions. Koppal district child rights protection officer Mahantaswamy Pujar highlights the issue of begging activities at religious sites, such as Hulagi, and suggests that local authorities conduct surveillance to facilitate departmental intervention. He notes the absence of a rehabilitation centre in Koppal, requiring transportation to Ballari. The 'Karnataka Prohibition of Begging Act-1975' constitutes the primary legislative tool for addressing begging and rehabilitation. Departmental officials indicate that while the social welfare department holds direct responsibility for implementing the act, it seems to focus more on hostels than on taking action regarding this issue. Section 12 of the act prohibits begging, carrying a maximum of three years' imprisonment. Authorities discourage giving alms to beggars accompanied by children and encourage reporting such instances to child welfare hotlines. The public can also report incidents via the social welfare department's helpline (94823 00400). The govt has also allocated Rs 306.2 crore from 2021-22 to 2023-24 for relief centres and committees, plus approximately Rs 10-15 crore for awareness campaigns. However, the official recognition of 340 children begging suggests that the effect of these measures was limited.

Delhi jeweller held in digital arrest scam

Noida: A Delhi jeweller, allegedly a part of a cyber fraud gang that cheated a woman of Rs 50 lakh by posing as officials from law enforcement and govt agencies, was arrested Tuesday. The accused, Sumit, was arrested from his home in Civil Lines on Tuesday. He was allegedly a part of a well-oiled network that intimidated people by impersonating officials from the telecom department, police and CBI. On May 26, a Noida resident lodged a complaint at the Cyber Crime police station, stating she was contacted by people who claimed she was under investigation for money laundering. Using spoofed calls, fake identity badges, and fabricated documents, including an arrest warrant, the fraudsters coerced her into transferring Rs 50 lakh for "verification" purposes. She was told the money would be returned after the probe, but the fraudsters broke all contact after receiving the funds. ACP (Cyber) Vivek Ranjan Rai said the name of Sumit emerged during the investigation. A previous arrest in the case helped police trace him to Delhi. He was taken into custody following a tip-off and confessed to having helped open bank accounts in Yes Bank and Bank of Baroda, where Rs 18 lakh from the defrauded amount was deposited and withdrawn. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Sumit also provided police with leads on other operatives. One of his associates had been arrested earlier on June 3. According to additional DCP Cyber Manisha Singh, Rs 2.57 lakh of the stolen amount has been frozen so far. Sumit, who works at an artificial jewellery shop, allegedly joined the fraud network a few months ago. Checks on the NCRP portal revealed two previous complaints registered against accounts he had opened—one in Uttar Pradesh and another in Maharashtra. Police believe the fraud was orchestrated by a mastermind operating from outside India. The gang used Indian bank accounts rented for commission to move the money, which was later converted into cryptocurrency or gift cards. SIM cards procured using fake documents were used to mask their identities. Officials say more arrests are likely soon as the probe widens.

E-seva employee dupes waste picker of Ladki Bahin aid

1 2 Pune: A waste picker, Savita Ankushe, approached e-sena kendra (citizen facilitation centre) to complete online formalities for Ladki Bahin sheme where the facilitator used his friend's contact and bank details in the form instead of Ankushe. She is still waiting to receive monetary benefit due to the alleged forgery in filling the form. Unable to complete form filling and other online formalities of the scheme herself, she approached the e-seva kendra, but now she is losing money as the money is being transferred in the facilitator's friend. Ankushe, with the help of an organisation working for the welfare of garbage collectors, approached the police regarding the cheating. Ankushe said she waited for months to get the funds, but did not receive any. She approached the centre operator for help and the operator did not cooperate and denied giving money to her. Hence, she filed a complaint with the police. According to police officers, they received the complaint and are acting on it. "We will carry out an investigation in this matter. If the operator is guilty, the offence will be registered," said Nilesh Jagdale, inspector of Hadapsar police station. She has been following up on the matter for the last two months. "Action against the operator should be taken. I should get the funds that I deserve," she said. Yogesh Manjula, a worker of the organization, told TOI that this is just one case that has surfaced. "There is a possibility that many more women could have been deceived by such centres. A detailed probe is necessary. These women are from financially weaker sections and need financial aid from the scheme. Their issue should be taken on priority," he said. The scheme of the state govt provides with benefits based on five key criteria. The beneficiaries have to be within the age limit of 18-65 years, they must be domiciled in the state, and their family income has to be within Rs 2.5 lakh per year. Additionally, those with a four-wheel vehicle and a member of the family in a govt job are excluded from the scheme. Those who receive benefits from other govt schemes can do so as long as the combined benefit is within Rs 1,500 per month. The scheme was launched in 2024 ahead of state elections.
