Police chase ensued after driver clocked at 106 mph on I-75

CBS News11-03-2025

A police chase resulted after a Kentucky man was clocked by radar at driving over 105 mph on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Michigan.
The chase started about 1:24 a.m. Monday as a Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputy was operating radar along southbound I-75 near Exit 27, South Huron River Drive, the sheriff's office reported.
The deputy caught a Nissan Sentra traveling at 106 mph in the posted 70 mph zone in Berlin Township, and tried to do a traffic stop on the vehicle.
The driver responded by speeding even faster, and refused to stop.
Another deputy set up stop sticks intended for the suspect on southbound I-75, just south of Exit 15, North Dixie Highway. That exit is in Frenchtown Township. The stop sticks flattened three of the vehicle's tires, forcing the driver to stop.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man from Kentucky, was taken into custody without incident and taken to Monroe County Jail. Arraignment on a charge of fleeing and eluding is pending in First District Court.
The case remains under investigation; the sheriff's office asked anyone with information to call the department at 734-240-7710.

‘It's like senior skip day': RPD, MCSO work together to introduce new safety measures at Charlotte Beach Park

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County leaders and law enforcement introduced an increased presence starting on Wednesday evening at Ontario Beach Park. Officers said they responded to Ontario Beach Park last Wednesday for disturbances breaking out in large crowds. That led to 19-year-old Deandre Leonard getting arrested for allegedly running around with a handgun. 'We can't allow that to happen again,' Captain Greg Bello said. On Tuesday, Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello announced that on Wednesday nights, which is the night of the weekly Concerts by the Shore, will begin having a huge increase of law enforcement personnel: including RPD's Special Events Detail and the Patrol Unit from the Department's Lake section, deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and troopers from New York State Police. Teams will also be assigned from Monroe County Probation, Monroe County Security, and City of Rochester security. 'It's a great summer event that over 1,000 people go to,' Captain Bello said. 'We want to make sure that that's a safe event to go to.' Weather-dependent, RPD said it will implement its Tactical Unit and Traffic Enforcement Unit to 'conduct targeted, disorderly traffic safety, and all sorts of enforcement in the parking lots of the beach area.' Captain Bello said this is to target any groups 'before they're able to get into a point of creating mischief.' On Saturday evening, multiple roads were closed down in the Charlotte neighborhood near the beach. Fights spilled toward Lake Avenue in front of Tropix. Business owners have told News 8 that this has become a regular thing in the area. Rochester police, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and New York State Police are meeting to plan for increased patrols in the area. First responders will also be working with the Rochester Transit Service to implement a special events detail. 'Our Staff Duty officer now has the authority to turn busses around,' Bello said. 'So if we have large groups of teens going to the beach in order to try to create problems at the beach, we're going to turn that bus around.' The Monroe Crime Analysis Center will also be used to monitor social media and different groups to target any events, fights, or chaos being planned at the beach. 'We're going to go after those that are that are trying to create chaos,' Bello said. At the end of the day, it's a family park.' Monroe County announced County Executive Adam Bello has worked with the President of the Monroe County Legislature to introduce a Capital Improvement Project. This would put gates at the parking lot of the beaches to monitor who is going in and out more effectively. 'This isn't something new. This has been going on for decades, and I think it's one of the really cornerstones of public safety in the county of Monroe,' a Monroe County Director said. Monroe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brendan Hurley said these fights coincide with Senior Skip Day. 'These are juveniles,' Deputy Hurley said. 'These are teens going out and causing havoc. But like you saw last week, we arrested somebody with a gun, so that has the potential to get a lot worse. So that's why we're taking it serious, and we're going to try to nip it in the bud and stop it before anything gets too far in the name of safety.' When asked why this wasn't done a long time ago, Captain Bello said it has to do with resources. 'We don't have infinite resources,' he said. 'We have to prioritize as we go forward with what we're going after with our non fatal shooting team. We have to focus. And so we've had details up at the beach. There was a detail up at the beach last week that thankfully kept that from escalating any further. But what we've looked at is, okay, where's our most appropriate deployment of resources? And what we found is that we need to increase those resources at the beach, and that's what we're doing in response to that.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Traffic stop in the Keys: guns, marijuana and a link to a Florida Panthers game?

A handful of marijuana and a couple of guns — one with a connection to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers — got four men from Palm Beach arrested in the Florida Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say a Saturday afternoon traffic stop was made at Mile Marker 103 on U.S. 1 with Greenacres' Demerion Fields, 21, at the wheel, and three other men in the car. A 'strong odor' of marijuana was emanating from the vehicle, which kicked off a search. Among the various items that deputies dug up: two stolen loaded 9mm handguns, two loaded extended magazines and about 22.5 grams of marijuana. One of the guns was connected to a theft from a car parked at a Florida Panthers game, the sheriff's office said. Imagine holding a small apple, and you'll have a rough idea of what 20 grams resembles. The actual volume can vary based on the density and moisture content of the cannabis. Denser buds will take up less space than fluffier ones. So, even if the scale says 20 grams, two batches might look quite different. Deputies eventually learned Fields doesn't own a valid driver's license and was not allowed to have a gun due to a previous protection order stemming from an argument with his girlfriend. Isaiah Dimitris McCrary, a 20-year-old who was in the car, had a previous run-in with the police when he was a teenager from a 2021 robbery in Palm Beach County, to which he pleaded guilty, the sheriff's office said. All four men in the car were arrested and charged. Fields is facing charges of driving without a valid driver's license, grand theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm or ammunition while being the subject of a risk protection order, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. McCrary, from West Palm Beach, faces grand theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a Florida delinquent, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jimmy Cliff Leger, 21, of Palm Springs, faces possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Todd Bradley Presendieu, 20, from Lake Worth, faces possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. As of Sunday night, all four remained in jail.

Fundraiser started after 5-vehicle crash ‘totaled' family's only car

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo family has launched a GoFundMe online fundraiser after a crash involving five vehicles reportedly resulted in their only car being 'wrecked and left totaled.' The crash occurred on Wednesday, June 4, near the 600 block of West 29th Street. According to a San Angelo Police Department officer at the scene, the collision happened after a white Chevrolet Suburban traveling westbound on 29th Street crashed into a silver Nissan Sentra that was traveling eastbound on the same street. The Suburban then left the roadway, striking a blue Chevy Colorado before continuing into a parking lot just outside of a nearby Cato Fashions store located in a strip mall. The vehicle then struck a silver Dodge Challenger, which in turn was pushed into a dark gray Dodge Challenger. The SAPD told a Concho Valley Homepage reporter that the driver of the Suburban may have suffered a medical complication while driving, causing the crash. The motorist was transported to the hospital. Johnny Guinan, the fundraiser's organizer, said he now owes $15,000 despite the car's estimated value being 'only $5,000.' Worsening matters for the family is their financial situation before the five-vehicle crash. Guinan stated on the webpage that an injury caused by a crash that occurred approximately one year ago has 'drained' the family's savings and forced him to switch jobs. 'We are just asking for some help getting a new car or getting ours fixed; any little bit helps,' the GoFundMe reads. As of the time of publication, the fundraiser has garnered $25 for the family.
