The Best Sleeping Pads For Campgrounds—Our Comfiest Picks

WIRED22-05-2025

The following sleeping pads didn't impress us as much as the ones above, but we'd still recommend them if none of the others strike your fancy.
Kelty Kush Queen Airbed for $100: This PVC-free queen-sized airbed from Kelty includes a pump that makes inflating a snap (make sure you charge it before you go), and the 6-inch-thick pad is plenty comfortable. It is not an insulated air mattress like the REI above, so it's best for warmer months, but it can double as a spare bed at home.
Sleeping Pads to Avoid
Not every sleeping pad is a winner. We've tested and run into issues with the following models.
Exped Flexmat Plus: What if the cheap, light, and indestructible closed-cell foam mats like the iconic Z-Rest and RidgeRest were … giant? It's a fun idea, but the Exped Flexmat Plus is a noble failure. The problem with this extra-thick, 1.5-inch, closed-cell mat is that, while relatively light, cheap, and indestructible, the foam is hard and spikey. And by 'spikey' we mean that it's literally just spikes that stab you while you sleep. Fans say it requires a break-in period. After six nights on it, reviewer Martin Cizmar begged the dungeon guard for release.
Big Agnes Q-Core: Q-Core pads are comfortable out of the box, with impressive R-value and weight stats for the price. However, you should avoid them. The unique offset I-beam construction that makes this pad so light and comfortable is somewhat notorious for failing—which is exactly what happened to Cizmar after about a year of use. In our experience, which other reviews back up, the welds that hold the top and bottom together are prone to popping apart. After adding air, you'll have a large lump that grows over time, and duct tape cannot fix it.
Exped DeepSleep: If you're thinking about an inflatable Exped but are not fully committed to shelling out for the MegaMat 10, you may be inclined to try the thinner and cheaper DeepSleep. Don't do it. The DeepSleep is 3 inches thick instead of 4, but you'll feel that inch in your bones. The DeepSleep has rugged 75-denier fabric on top and bottom instead of the soft and stretchy 50-denier polyester you find on the top of the MegaMat and some competitors. The DeepSleep is a sturdy mattress and probably fine for some people, but it's not the Exped experience most sleepers are looking for. Stick with the MegaMat. —Martin Cizmar
Klymit Static V2: Klymit's budget inflatable pad is popular with unfussy weekend warriors because of its price point (around $50) and impressive weight (1 pound). In fact, this is why I bought one for my now 10-year-old daughter when we ventured into the backcountry for the first time, with her stuff on my back. She didn't complain, but when I used it for a night, I found it was flimsy and offered comparable cushion and less heat retention than a closed-cell foam pad like the Z-Lite. The Z-Lite weighs a couple of ounces less, and you won't have to worry about puncturing it. The more expensive inflatable beds above are great, but if you're you're looking for a lightweight budget pick, I'd stay with closed-cell foam.

Gabrielle Union And Dwyane Wade Pen Heartwarming Birthday Tribute To Zaya For Her 18th Birthday

Source: Presley Ann / Getty Gabrielle Union and her husband Dwyane Wade took to Instagram on June 2 with a heartwarming tribute in honor of their daughter Zaya Wade's birthday. The beautiful model and LGBTQ advocate turned 18 on May 29. The loving parents kicked off their sweet message by praising Zaya for her incredible 'transparency' and strength. 'They say parents are the ones to raise and show their children 'the way', but you've been the one to show us what true strength, vulnerability, and love really look like,' Union, 52, and Wade, 43, penned. 'At just 18, you've already shown the world what it means to be brave.' The duo added, 'Your courage lights the way for so many to follow, and we're right beside you every step of the way.' Union and Wade recently shared a joint-post highlighting moments from Zaya's 18th birthday celebration, which took place over the weekend in collaboration with H&M and MAC Cosmetics. The photos featured Zaya looking radiant in a stunning white gown adorned with shimmery tassels and a flowing train that added an extra touch of elegance. She carried the shimmering theme into her makeup, wearing eye-catching pearl accents woven into her eyeshadow. To complete the look, she paired the ensemble with beige heels and a matching bag. Additional snapshots captured her mingling with guests and clearly enjoying every moment of the festive occasion. Recapping the special night on her own Instagram page, Zaya told fans that the entire night was 'special.' She added, 'Thank you to my friends and family who celebrated with me. It's going to be an amazing year.' Time surely does fly by! In a March interview with Seventeen , Zaya shared that she's currently exploring college options as she prepares to transition from high school to university life. As a transgender teen, she expressed her desire to attend a school where she can fully embrace her identity and feel supported. However, she also voiced concern about the growing number of anti-trans bills being passed across the country, admitting that her safety is a significant factor in her decision-making process. 'It would be a little too idealistic to say I'm going to be safe anywhere I go. Even if I'm in a blue state or blue city or blue county, it's not to say that it will be free of Black and queer discrimination. But I'm obviously factoring in the safer choices,' said Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020. 'I really want to put myself in spaces where I know I can find my community and my community can find me, and we can work together to keep the queer community across the country strong.' Like any teen, love and romance appear to be on the mind of the Gen-Z beauty, too. The Miu Miu model revealed that she was on the market and currently dating, although 'dating' is a term that is a bit 'aggressive' for Zaya. She'd much rather have a casual 'situationship' at this stage of her life. 'In Gen Z, situationships are king. In no way are we opposed to a relationship, but sometimes there's comfort in not being so locked in. At the end of [the] day, I have to focus on me,' she confessed. Congrats to Zaya Wade. PUMA's Voices of a RE:GENERATION Present 2024 Sustainability Report for Young Audiences

Herzogenaurach, Germany: Sports company PUMA is making its 2024 sustainability report accessible for young audiences with the help of video and social media content created by the Gen-Z environmentalists that are part of the Voices of a RE:GENERATION initiative. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: Sports company PUMA is making its 2024 sustainability report accessible for young audiences with the help of video and social media content created by the Gen-Z environmentalists that are part of the Voices of a RE:GENERATION initiative. The Voices, who joined PUMA in 2023 to advise the company on its sustainability strategy, will summarize the complex content of the report and focus on the issues that matter most to young audiences, including climate change and circularity. In doing so, they offer fresh takes on PUMA's environmental priorities, while reflecting the concerns and expectations of Gen-Z. 'As a brand, we know that publishing sustainability data isn't enough. Today's consumers want clarity, action and accountability and they want it communicated in ways that resonate,' said Kerstin Neuber, Senior Director Corporate Communications at PUMA.'The Voices will help us share our challenges and achievements in a way that's accessible, honest and rooted in the issues young people want to know more about.' In its 2024 sustainability report, PUMA details the tangible process it's making to lower its carbon footprint across both its own operations and supply chain. This includes setting science-based targets, increasing renewable energy use and working closely with suppliers to drive measurable reductions. The brand is also stepping up its approach to circularity. In 2024, it reduced waste to landfill by 87.8% per footwear pair and diverted 99% of fabric waste from landfill, with the majority reused or recycled. To address material choices, PUMA has committed to sourcing deforestation-free bovine leather by 2030 and is partnering with the Textile Exchange and cattle farmers in Brazil to support both animal welfare and protect critical forest ecosystems that store vast amounts of carbon. It's also expanding initiatives like RE:FIBRE, the brand's textile-to-textile recycling programme, to cut reliance on virgin polyester and lower the environmental footprint of its products and packaging. PUMA achieved its goal of making 9 out of 10 products from recycled or certified materials and made further progress with its sustainability targets, such as lowering its greenhouse gas emissions. The full report, containing more than 200 pages, was published in late April. As a result of its 'Conference of the People' event in London in 2022, PUMA made it a priority to be more proactive in communicating its sustainability strategy to younger audiences. New research commissioned by PUMA shows that more than half (55%) of 18–27-year-old consumers globally believe brands aren't being transparent enough about their environmental impact. Reducing carbon emissions is one of the top priorities for Gen-Z when it comes to responsible production, with one in four (25%) identifying it as a major concern.
