Islam Makhachev lashes out at Ilia Topuria: ‘Just a big mouth with a nice haircut'

Independent15-05-2025

Islam Makhachev has fired back at Ilia Topuria over his claim that the Russian is a 'hypocrite', calling his distant rival: 'Just a big mouth with a nice haircut.'
In February, Topuria vacated the UFC featherweight title with the aim of challenging Makhachev for the lightweight belt. However, Makhachev has now vacated his own title as he prepares to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight strap, which 'JDM' took from Makhachev's friend Belal Muhammad this month.
Topuria will face former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the title vacated by Makhachev, but the Georgian-Spaniard would have rather tested himself against Makhachev; many in MMA deem the latter the pound-for-pound best fighter in the sport, with Topuria close behind.
Topuria, 28, recently called Makhachev, 33, a 'hypocrite' for giving up the 155lb belt after taking issue with 'El Matador''s decision to relinquish the 145lb gold. And now, Makhachev has hit back.
Topuria initially said: 'He is the biggest hypocrite I've ever seen. He said he didn't want to give me the opportunity because I was the little guy, and now the little guy is the one looking for the same opportunity I was looking for...
'Ali [Abdelaziz, Makachev's manager] should thank me for not beating his star. That's the fight everyone wanted to see. I put everything I could on the table, and they ran away. Why chase? If someone runs away, you don't have to bully them. I don't want to fight people who don't want to fight me either.'
Makhachev then tweeted on Thursday (15 May): 'Difference between me and you [is] that I cleaned [up the] top list in my division, moved to [the] next. But you ran away from two contenders who had consecutive 5-9 wins in FW division. You are nobody in LW division, just a big mouth from Spain with [a] nice haircut. Go get one W, and we can talk boy.'
Makhachev was referring to the fact that he achieved a record-breaking four successful title defences at lightweight, while Topuria retained his belt once before vacating the strap.
Makhachev submitted Oliveira to win the vacant 155lb title in October 2022, before recording two successful defences against Alexander Volkanovski (who held the 145lb belt at the time) in 2023, one against Dustin Poirier in 2024, and one against Renato Moicano in January. He outpointed then knocked out Volkanovski in their fights, and submitted Poirier and Moicano.
Meanwhile, Topuria knocked out Volkanovski last February to become featherweight champion, before retaining the gold with a knockout of former title holder Max Holloway in October.
Topuria is unbeaten in MMA at 16-0, while Makhachev is 16-1 in the UFC and 27-1 overall. Topuria debuted in the UFC in 2020, while Makhachev debuted in the promotion in 2015 – the same year he suffered his sole loss.

It's fun, and not fun – Jannik Sinner looks forward to final with Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner says his blockbuster French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz will be 'fun, and not fun'. Italian world number one Sinner takes on second seed and defending champion Alcaraz in the first major final between the new generation of men's tennis superstars. It is a match-up tinged with extra significance after Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, with the 38-year-old Serb – the last of the old guard still just about standing – admitting it may have been his last Roland Garros. Instead it will be Sinner and Alcaraz who take centre stage in the first men's grand-slam final to be contested between two players born in this century. 'It's fun, and not fun, you know. It's both ways,' said 23-year-old Sinner of meeting the Spaniard, one year his junior. 'But I think we try to push ourselves in the best possible way. I believe when there is a good match, it's also good to play, you know. It's not only to watch, but also to play. It's very special. 'And the stage, it doesn't get any bigger now. Grand-slam finals against Carlos, it's a special moment for me and for him, too. 'He won here last year, so let's see what's coming. But for sure, the tension you feel before the match and during the match is a little bit different in a way, because we are both very young, we are both different, but talented.' It is an intriguing showdown between the two bright young things who have won the last five grand slams between them. Sinner, the reigning US and Australian Open champion, is on a 20-match winning streak at grand slams and, with Wimbledon on the horizon, could be five weeks away from holding all four titles. But standing in the way of the 'Sinner Slam' is Alcaraz, who has won their last four meetings including the semi-final here last year and in the final on the Rome clay last month, albeit in the Italian's first tournament back from a three-month doping suspension. Alcaraz is also bidding to become the first man to retain the title since his idol, Rafael Nadal, managed it in 2020. 'Jannik, he's the best tennis player right now. I mean, he's destroying every opponent,' said Alcaraz. 'I love that battle. But, you know, most of the time is just about suffering, being pushed to the limit. 'But my favourite thing is it gives you the feedback of how can I be better, a better player. I think that's important, and that's beautiful, even though if I win or not.'

How Jobe is morphing into Jude: Bellingham brothers are following same path thanks to plan mapped out by their police sergeant father and doting mother with younger sibling turning his back on Premier League

Bellingham. One of the biggest names in the footballing world right now. Jude is the first of the Bellingham fold that comes to mind, having gone from Birmingham to the Bernabeu and rising to global fame along the way. At just 21-years-old, Bellingham has now completed his second domestic season with Real Madrid, playing alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. Bought for £88.5m by Los Blancos, Bellingham has been performing at superb levels both for club and country, continuing to be at the forefront of new England manager Thomas Tuchel 's plans. Yet, Jude is not the only Bellingham to be making a name for himself - with younger brother Jobe set to follow his older brother down a similar career path amid an impending move to German giants Borussia Dortmund. But, what is it that's lead to the striking similarities between the two? Well, Jobe and Jude have always maintained a close relationship, with family being a centrepiece for the Bellingham clan. Jobe's big brother Jude Bellingham previously played for Dortmund between 2020 and 2023 The brothers may steal the spotlight but the importance of their parents cannot be forgotten given just how essential they were in the early stages of their sons' careers. The Bellingham's ferried both Jobe and Jude to football matches growing up and the pair continue to have an active presence in the boys' lives. When Jude moved to Madrid, Mark, a former non-league striker, stayed at home with Jobe to support his development while mother Denise went to the Spanish capital. Denise, who works in human resources, manages her son's finances, allowing the pair to focus on their football. Jude even mentioned once that his mother, who resides with him in a shared flat in Madrid, makes his bed and cooks his meals. Mark has also had an important impact on the boys' life, being a key role model during their youth. A retired police sergeant for West Midlands Police, Mark introduced both Jude and Jobe to football and gave them tips on how to improve and how to deal with the pressures of football. With 700 goals in 900 appearances in the non-league, it is clear to see where the boys got their talent from, as Mark has been the catalyst for his boys falling in love with the sport. The family have always maintained a close relationship and helped shape their early careers Jude told the The Football Association: 'We talk about footballing heroes, and my dad was like my first. 'When you go and watch him play every week in non-league, you know it's not the Premier League or anything, but seeing the way that he played and the atmosphere, it made me fall in love with football so he was probably my first hero.' The Bellingham's consistently support eachother such as when Jude and his parents flew in to watch Jobe playing in the England Under-21s back in November 2024. Jobe has benefitted greatly from his parents' support just like Jude has, and the move to Borussia Dortmund marks a major step in his playing career. His family will be with him every step of the way as the 19-year-old ventures into a new country and new league, competing at the top for one of Germany's best teams. The 19-year-old will follow in Jude's footsteps and join Dortmund, signing on a five-year deal. Just as his brother did, Jobe started at boyhood club Birmingham, progressing through the academy to play for the senior team. He made 25 appearances for the Blues before Sunderland picked up the young starlet for less than £1.5m, which seems an absolute steal now. Stourbridge's finest became a spearhead of the Black Cats' midfield, making 90 appearances other two seasons, including propelling the side to a return to the Premier League after an eight-year wait. His outstanding performances in the Championship deservedly won him the EFL Young Player of the Season, an accolade his older brother won when he was at Birmingham. Who knows, pending the success of his spell with Borussia Dortmund, could Jobe and Jude play together under the lights of the Santiago Bernabeu? Only time will tell.

UFC 316: What can Sean O'Malley do different in the rematch?

Sean O'Malley will attempt to win back the bantamweight title when he faces Merab Dvalishvili in the main event at UFC 316. In the first fight between the pair at UFC 306 , Dvalishvili won in a dominant performance to capture the belt from O'Malley, who could not live with the wrestling of the Georgian fighter. Advertisement Since then, Dvalishvili defended the belt against the highly rated Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311, becoming the first fighter to defeat the Dagestan title challenger. Unbeaten in his last 12 fights, nobody has been able to live with the pace Dvalishvili puts on his opponents with his stamina arguably the best in the sport. [caption id="attachment_1770841" align="alignnone" width="819"] Photo: Sofacore.[/caption] With wins over Jose Aldo, Henry Cejudo, O'Malley and Nurmagomedov, he is up there with some of the greatest the sport has seen at 135 pounds. Advertisement There may not be a clear path to victory for O'Malley, but if he is to cause the upset, it will be early and via knockout. It's a big if, but if he can keep the early rounds standing and frustrate Dvalishvili in the grappling, he may find the opportunity to put Dvalishvili in trouble. One of the biggest superstars in the sport, his online presence has been notably quieter, a sign of a more focused O'Malley, who is aware of the challenges that await him. In the co-main event at UFC 316, Julianna Pena begins her second reign as champions when she faces Kayla Harrison. Advertisement Pena defeated Raquel Pennington at UFC 307, in what was her first fight since losing the belt at UFC 277 to Amanda Nunes. Pena shocked the sporting world when she defeated Nunes at UFC 269 to win the belt, so she knows she can rise to the biggest of occasions. Photo: Sofascore. However, going into the fight, many see Harrison as the favourite. An Olympic champion at wrestling, Harrison dominated in the PFL, and already has wins in the UFC over Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira, she has shown she can perform at UFC level. In what was one of the biggest UFC signings in years, having Harrison as a UFC champion would be huge for the sport. Advertisement Elsewhere on the main card, Patchy Mix makes his introduction to the UFC when he takes on Mario Bautista in the bantamweight division. A champion in Bellator, Miz already has wins over the likes of Sergio Petitis and Magomed Magomedov, he has already got some huge wins in his career. Photo: Sofascore. With 13 of his wins coming via submission, he is always a danger on the ground and will capitalise on any mistake. However, he will face another fighter who enjoys a scramble on the ground in Bautista, whose last win was against Jose Aldo at UFC 307. With both fighters so could on the ground, there could be a temptation to keep this standing, in what should be a fascinating encounter.
