Passengers scream as flight suffers severe turbulence flying through deadly Delhi storm

An IndiGo flight from the Indian capital of Delhi to Srinagar in Kashmir, carrying over 200 passengers, hit severe turbulence during an unexpected hailstorm on Wednesday, reportedly causing minor damage to the aircraft's nose.
The passengers faced the harrowing mid-air experience when the aircraft was caught in the violent storm. A viral video captured panicked scenes inside the cabin, with passengers screaming and crying as the plane shook violently from turbulence.
Despite the chaos, the flight landed safely in Srinagar at 6.30pm local time.
'IndiGo flight 6E 2142 operating from Delhi to Srinagar encountered sudden hailstorm en route. The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar,' the airline said in a statement on Wednesday.
'The airport team attended to the customers after arrival of aircraft, prioritising their wellbeing and comfort. The aircraft will be released post necessary inspection and maintenance.'
Among the passengers on board was Sheikh Samiullah, a startup co-founder from Srinagar. He told news agency PTI: 'Everything seemed normal, until the pilot suddenly announced a rough patch ahead and asked us to fasten our seat belts. I'm a frequent flyer, but I've never experienced turbulence like this. It was terrifying. I'm truly grateful to the pilot for landing us safely,' said Mr Samiullah, the co-founder of FastBeetle, a logistics tech platform.
'Heart's still racing, but I feel like I've been reborn. Grateful to Allah,' he later wrote on X.
Another passenger who was aboard the plane, Owais Maqbool Hakeem wrote on X: 'It was a near death experience. The nose of the plane is damaged...There was panic and people were screaming. Everyone was scared.'
The airline has not publicly confirmed reports of any damage to the aircraft. The Independent has reached out to IndiGo for comment.
Meanwhile, bad weather in Delhi has led to the delay or diversion of several domestic and international flights, according to airport sources cited by ANI.
Airlines like IndiGo and Air India have issued advisories urging passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. IndiGo noted that heavy rain and thunderstorms in Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata are disrupting flight schedules.
This comes as Delhi and NCR witnessed a severe dust storm on Wednesday. After days of extreme heat, Delhi-NCR experienced a sudden weather change on Wednesday evening, with heavy rain, hailstorms, and strong winds. The storm caused uprooted trees, waterlogging, traffic jams, and damage to windows and hoardings in areas like Noida.
A 50-year-old woman, Sunita Devi, and her two-year-old grandson died after a railing net from a 21-storey building crashed onto them during the fierce dust storm in Greater Noida's Migsun Ultimo on Wednesday.
They were about to enter their residential tower when the net, which covered a shaft, broke due to strong winds and fell on them, The Indian Express reported.
Sunita Devi was visiting her daughter and son-in-law when the accident happened. The child succumbed to injuries during treatment.
With their deaths, the toll from the storm across Delhi-NCR has risen to six.
Earlier, four others were killed in Delhi and Ghaziabad, as the powerful storm caused widespread disruption – uprooting trees, damaging vehicles, affecting Delhi Metro and flight operations, and triggering power outages.

A Scottish travel vlogger has flown on India's ' worst-rated airline' and has urged people to ignore one thing - and that's its low rating. Going viral in one of his latest videos, the Scotsman told his followers that he is 'catching a one-hour flight with India's worst-rated airline, which is IndiGo". Revealing it "ranks 103 out of 109 in the world", showing a screenshot of AirHelp's website ranking, he says that this is "pretty bad, but I want to see how bad they really are". ‌ Hugh, or HughAbroad as he's known, has amassed millions of followers across his social media platforms—including TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram — and consistently gets millions of views on each video on TikTok alone. Heading to Bengaluru, formerly called Bangalore, he said the plane ticket cost him 3,760 Indian rupees, which is the equivalent of £34 or $44. ‌ He revealed that for this price, you get 20kg of luggage and a chicken sandwich on board. With his window seat secured, he checked in and dropped off his bags - all of which was an easy process with no issues. When it came to boarding the plane, the Scots traveller was left shocked, wondering why it's ranked so low. 'Usually with these cheap airlines you go on the tarmac and up the stairs but here there's a tunnel straight in," he noted. Filming his seating area, he said: "Spotless. Really, really clean and the leg room is pretty good. There's literally no rubbish at all down here, just the usual magazine and safety instructions. The seat is relatively comfortable as well." Giving it the thumbs up, he said: "Pretty good so far. I don't see why this is rated the worst airline in India - no complaints.' After taking off, he gave an update and still didn't see any issues. "Only seven minutes after the estimated departure time, we have taken off. Impressive." "So far IndiGo, so good," he added, noting that despite coming in at 103rd place, it was on time and that the plane was clean, the seat went back: "What's not to like? Also very, very, affordable.' ‌ Speaking about his Chicken Junglee sandwich, he said that the "bread is very fresh, fluffy and inside that chicken is pretty moist with the mayonnaise". He rated the sandwich seven out of 10. 'So far, this has been the best experience I could've ever imagined, nothing has gone wrong" he said. Within an hour, he landed and praised the airline yet again. He concluded his airline review by saying: "That honestly was an absolute fantastic experience and if anyone tells you anything negative about IndiGo, they are lying. I'm rating that at 10 out of 10 - flawless honestly for a budget airline that was spot on." ‌ Speaking to the Daily Record, Hugh said: "I was shocked at how low IndiGo was on the rankings, as it's one of the best budget airline experiences I've had. On time, clean, spacious and affordable. I think the rankings need to be taken with a pinch of salt, to be honest." According to the Hindustan Times: "IndiGo has been ranked among the 'world's worst airlines' in the 2024 AirHelp Score report, securing 103rd place out of 109 with a score of 4.80. The low rating is attributed to underwhelming customer satisfaction and poor handling of flight disruption claims. "Responding to the ranking, IndiGo criticised the methodology, saying the survey does not disclose the sample size from India, casting doubt on the survey's credibility. "Conducted by AirHelp, an EU-based claim processing agency, the survey evaluates airlines globally on punctuality, quality of service, and handling of compensation claims. These criteria, weighed equally, form the overall score. The analysis covers data from January to October, incorporating on-time performance, customer claims processing, and feedback from passengers across 54 countries on food, comfort, and service." SAO PAULO, June 6 (Reuters) - Brazilian airline Gol ( opens new tab formally exited its bankruptcy proceedings in the United States on Friday, setting the stage for fleet expansion and new flights and routes within Brazil and other countries, Chief Executive Officer Celso Ferrer told Reuters. In 2024, Gol became the second Brazilian airline, after Latam in 2020, to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as the sector grappled with debt burdens, a steep decline in passenger numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and aircraft delivery delays. Azul , a Gol competitor, filed for Chapter 11 last month. Despite Azul's financial struggles, talks over a potential partnership between the carrier and Gol are ongoing, Ferrer said. But a final deal "will only happen if it adds value and results, whether through routes or growth. If it's better for everyone," he added. Discussions regarding the business combination, which were formalized with a memorandum of understanding last January, are being managed by Abra Group, the majority investor in both Gol and Colombia's Avianca.
