Why women are 3 times more likely than men to lose jobs to AI, as per ILO study
As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries and automates tasks at lightning speed, a new global study has uncovered a troubling truth: Women are three times more likely than men to lose their jobs to AI.
The study, conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a United Nations agency, shows that this fast-moving wave of automation isn't hitting everyone equally— and women are bearing the brunt of it.
The numbers tell a stark story
In wealthier countries, around 10% of jobs held by women are at high risk of being replaced by AI. In contrast, only 3.5% of male-held jobs fall into that category. This isn't just about automation—it's about widening the gender gap in the workplace.
So, what's behind this imbalance?
The jobs most at risk
According to the ILO, AI is especially likely to replace clerical and administrative roles—jobs like typists, data entry clerks, bookkeepers, and even some financial analysts and software developers. These positions are often repetitive, rule-based, and highly digitized, making them ideal targets for tools like generative AI.
And guess what? These roles are mostly held by women.

'Clerical jobs face the highest exposure of all,' says the ILO report. Senior economist Janine Berg adds, 'We need clarity and context—not just AI hype—so countries can prepare their labor markets for a fairer future.'
It's not just low-level jobs anymore
What's even more concerning is that AI is starting to creep into higher-skilled fields too. Jobs in software, finance, and media—once considered safe from automation—are now at risk because of how digital and data-driven they've become.
That means even women in high-paying, cognitively demanding roles aren't safe from the impact of AI.
The gender gap is growing
Jobs that are relatively safe from AI—like cleaners, dentists, performers, and sanitation workers—are less likely to be held by women. This creates a dangerous imbalance that could widen existing gaps in pay, employment, and career advancement.
Marek Troszyński, co-author of the ILO study, highlights the importance of this research: 'This tool helps identify where GenAI will have the biggest impact, so countries can prepare and protect workers.'
A call for smarter policies
The ILO is urging governments, employers, and labor organizations to take action—now. The goal? To make sure AI helps improve job quality and productivity without leaving women behind.
Tech isn't neutral— And neither should our response be
At the heart of this study is a powerful message: AI doesn't work in a vacuum. It reflects and amplifies existing social structures—including biases.
If we don't act now, AI could deepen inequality in the workforce. But with smart, inclusive policies and proactive planning, we can shape a future where technology supports equity—not exclusion.
The bottom line
The AI revolution is here, and it's changing how we work. The real question is: Will we let it deepen the gender divide, or will we use it to build a more inclusive world of work?
The answer depends on what we do next.

High prices of Dussehri, Langra likely to come down by June 15
Jaipur: The beloved Dussehri and Langra varieties of mangoes are selling at higher prices this season due to low yield this year. However, wholesale dealers at Muhana Mandi say these varieties are expected to see a dip in prices from June 15 onwards. According to wholesale fruit traders at Muhana Mandi, most of the varieties of mangoes have now arrived in the market, including Safeda, Langra, Dussehri, Kesar, Fazali, Totapuri, and Alphonso. "We are getting Dussehri from Rampur, Hathras, Lucknow, and Meerut. Compared to 2024, the supply is less. When we enquired, we were told that yield of Dussehri and Langra varieties has been less this year," said Aabid Rehman, a wholesale dealer at Muhana Mandi. He added that several factors, including abrupt weather conditions during May and ageing trees, are behind the low yield of mangoes this year. "Dussehri is available at Rs 60 to Rs 80 per kg in the wholesale market, but in the retail market it is being sold at Rs 120 to Rs 150 per kg. Last year, prices of Dushehri in May were between Rs 80 to Rs 120 per kg in retail," said Mahesh Hardasani, a wholesale dealer of fruits. Hardasani added that Langra is available at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg in wholesale market and in retail between Rs 120 and Rs 150 per kg. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Costco Shoppers Say This Wrinkle Cream Is "Actually Worth It" The Skincare Magazine Undo Wholesale traders said they were expecting a better supply by the second week of June. Karnataka government seeks aid from corporates to build public schools
Bengaluru: Unhappy with the progress of Karnataka public schools, the state govt has appointed nodal officers to coordinate and expedite the construction of CSR-funded schools. Commissioner for industrial development, Gunjan Krishna was appointed as the coordinating officer; and Karnataka state industrial infrastructure development corporation, MD Khushboo G Chowdhary will be the CEO. The two officers will work with various corporates to mobilise CSR funds for schools. KPSes are kindergarten to class 12 schools, which the govt wants to project as signature schools providing quality education with robust infrastructure. The decision to appoint nodal officers was taken in view of the slow progress in setting up 2,000 KPSes in the state. The two officers will work to expedite the execution of this project, said the DCM's office in a press statement. Currently, there are 285 KPSes, and the plan is to add 2,000 more in three years. In a review meeting, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar took a dig at the district commissioners and zilla panchayat CEOs. "CSR funds to the tune of Rs 8,000 crore are available in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We gave clear instructions two years ago that they must be used to build KPSes. It has come to our notice that some corporations from the state are allocating CSR funds to private NGOs in other states and taking back 50% of that amount in cash. This is resulting in a loss for the state; it is our responsibility to use it for building the schools," he said. He said the corporates need not give the govt any funds; they can build a school and hand it over to the govt. "The govt can even provide lands and building designs. The corporates can brand the schools in their name," he said. He asked the district administration to write letters to corporates and arrange a meeting with them. "The education department will provide designs for the schools; the corporates need to get a building up and running. Set a target to build one model public school in every taluk and, based on the feedback, set a target to build one school for three grama panchayats," he told DCs and CEOs. The DCM said 13 CSR Karnataka public schools are being constructed in his constituency, and each of these schools costs between Rs 9 crore and Rs 12 crore. "The work is progressing well only in some regions, while there is negligence in other regions," he said.
